    • I've been vibing I think like oh yeah we're talking about rocks now everybody knows about what andesite is volcanic rock this is found on the coastal range also eastern Taiwan and in Lüdao and Lanyu so far off outlying islands sandstone fossil rich sandstone this can be found in a lot of Tainan and Kaohsiung also so the west coast has is known for their fossils that's one of the big things that I don't have because I haven't I don't really explore a lot of I've explored almost any of western Taiwan if I'm being honest so that's what I'm missing here is I'm missing a lot of the sedimentary rocks and all the cool fossil rich rocks that western Taiwan has to offer so if you like rocks you want to show me a cool rock and you live in western Taiwan maybe I can reach out to me because that's what I don't have here so go back to here igneous rock lava rock from the outlying islands of Taiwan metamorphic rocks from eastern Taiwan and then sedimentary rocks from western Taiwan with fossil I love Taiwan just because of like the wide variety of like the high mountains and like the beaches and everything from a rock perspective it sounds like it would be even more fascinating yeah is there a difference like altitude wise like for example like the top of the mountain and like the bottom of the same mountain or at the beach would that be like look the same to you or or is it interesting like from an altitude level as well oh my gosh yeah I mean if you love if you love rocks you also just love being outside and when you're at the top of a mountain you just look out over the landscape it's just the best feeling ever it's like this giant especially Taiwan has these arcing just rolling mountain ranges if you look at Taiwan and you cut it from the east to the west the rocks in the east are the oldest and you and then everything west of Taiwan are are lower and lower metamorphic grade so like for example what I mean by metamorphic grade is essentially how long something got cooked or baked so a lot of the central mountain range in Taiwan are slate or just a cooked mud and why is why is there why is there cooked mud now in the mountains the rest of the majority of Taiwan used to just be an ocean ocean bottom you know what is the at the bottom of an ocean just tons of slime muddy slime and that just sits in the bottom of the ocean and that stuff got pushed upwards and as it got pushed it got cooked and hardened so like from a rock's perspective like tops of Taiwan is honestly not that interesting to me because it's all just cooked mud like the top of Taiwan's mountains are all just majority is like cooked mud which is like basically fancy mud and that's also fancy mud that's like turned into plates essentially which is what a lot of indigenous folks used in like mountain tribes they use this as a construction material they use slate to build homes because it's so flat and also water resistant and also can be it's pretty stiff too so like from a rock perspective the mountain ranges in Taiwan they're all right but it's mostly about the view to get to get real close-up looks at rocks like pretty pretty rocks it's honestly nice to stay on the beach sides or at least like on the flatlands because um you have the rivers the power of Taiwan's rivers which are so extreme there's typhoons and there's earthquakes which means that as mount these mountains are also rising they're also being destroyed at one of the world's fastest rates like Taiwan's mountains are rising but also being washed away so what you have are these super wide river valleys which essentially show you a side view of all the rocks so like Taroko gorge yeah like Taroko and and also all around Taiwan you have these giant rivers these huge river valleys which are rarely full of water but they just left behind a lot of rocks you know you can find a lot of cool rocks just by crawling up river valleys and seeing the side view so for if you want to look really close at rocks staying lower is usually better because the river is doing all the work for you you don't need to cut open a rock to see what's inside no geologists love to see what's inside a rock but the river is naturally cut cut it for you if i would go out on a beach and i would look for like a pretty rock yeah i would yeah all rocks are pretty it's so excited i would just look at like the shape oh this kind of looks like a heart this looks like like a little stick or something so it's like a unique way for me but for for like just fresh beginners who wants to get into these different like types of rocks for example what will be like the the day one thing you will teach them like what should they look for how should they like analyze it from like the day one beginner level point of things if you want to get to know rocks you should familiarize yourself with minerals minerals are the things that make up rocks and once you can identify minerals then you can start feeling you know kind of special like oh i know what that is inside of it you should get yourself familiarized with this mineral right here this is called quartz you can check it out quartz is the most common mineral in the world it's silica one silica and two oxygens and it's super hard many many crystals you see around are made out of quartz and so if you can identify quartz there's some ways you can do it it's hard so it's got a hardness of seven it can scratch certain things so like knowing like if you can take it and you have maybe a penny or a nail and you could if you can scratch it and if it leaves a mark or it doesn't leave a mark that can be a way to identify quartz getting to know quartz like for example this is the one that i found in found in uh in hawaiian here too in northern hawaiian it's like see-through yeah it's a quartz can be quartz can be almost entirely translucent or it can be really white the three main things that make taiwan kind of world famous for geologists would be how it formed how active the landscape changes and then also the unique metamorphic rocks so those are like the main three things that taiwan is pretty much a playground for geologists amazing you really are the taiwan rock guy i don't know the most about rocks here in taiwan like i'm not a geology phd but i would like to say that from what i do know i can help you digest that information better than somebody who maybe knows three to four times more than me about these rocks in in taiwan an earthquake is happening because two plates are at odds and the the philippine ocean plate is pushing towards pushing towards the continent of eurasia but when when plates are moving apart like in iceland that's when volcanoes form like you can kind of think about the center of the earth is really hot the center of the earth is never going to get hotter it's always going to keep cooling off things that are hot are always going to try to cool down release its energy just like when we get hot we sweat so you can kind of think that a volcano is kind of like the earth sweating so the earth is really hot and it needs to find a way to the heat to escape the outside and when when that heat finally escapes it comes out in the form of a volcano and then when a volcano happens it's pushing those those two chips away but how come then taiwan both have earthquakes and volcanoes volcanoes don't just happen at where plates are coming apart okay volcanoes can also happen where when two plates come together there's usually a winner right one one plate is more buoyant and one plate is more dense and so when they come together one is going to slide underneath the other and we know that the center of the earth is super hot right the center is so hot as you move closer and deeper into the earth the rocks get hotter and hotter too for example these two plates are coming together one is going to start sliding underneath as that moves down it's going to start to melt a little because it keeps it gets so hot down here that's the the scientific sound it makes yes so like when these rocks down here at the bottom here they're going to get too hot they're going to get too hot and they're going to melt and when those rocks melt they get bubbly and they have a lower density right so like when like a bubbly soda it gets super bubbly and when you open it up all the air releases outward that gas needs to go somewhere and so it gets low and also lower density so like it wants to go back up rise back up to the surface and form a volcano the coolest part about this area i mean just all of taiwan is that you don't really need to go far to see a really textbook quality rock of metamorphic igneous and sedimentary rocks so all the three main rock types are very accessible in in taiwan and you don't need to go too far to see them just see really nice really nice ones too no more questions perfect thank you all so much for watching my name is lucas it starts with alice in like ends with s as you subscribe please do both and see you all in the next one wow look at this l with like s and subscribe that's good

    • There's so many really fascinating things on here that I've never seen anywhere else Where I live in Japan food stalls are a common sight But the ones here in Hachinohe are very different from what I'm used to Again generous portions of seafood can be enjoyed here and Kimura-san's favorite dish Senbei Jiru a type of hot pot with rice crackers made an appearance here as well As the city got darker the streets started to light up as patrons shuffled in and out of tiny restaurants and bars The city was much more lively than I expected with lots of rustic charm and plenty of small establishments bursting with personality And After a wonderful tour with Mr. Kimura, we ended the night with one of his favorite foods You guessed it another pot of Senbei Jiru The next morning we got up early to visit Hachinohe's famous Sunday morning market This is the largest morning market in Japan with over 300 shops only operating from daybreak until about 9 a.m This market is popular with locals and tourists alike and serves everything from seafood to pastries to coffee and more This is so relaxing After the morning market it was time to leave Hachinohe and make our way towards Aomori City But first we made our way through the gorgeous Oirase gorge with rushing waterfalls clean rivers and plenty of It's said to be one of the most beautiful river valleys in all of Japan Especially in autumn when the leaves begin to change color.

    • But first, we made our way through the gorgeous Oirasei Gorge.

(Pros and Cons of Traveling in Japan)

(Pros and Cons of Traveling in Japan)
    • yeah yeah this is all over america too this is an exclusive to japan just be careful right this is probably everywhere but that's just like a general internet thing and they do have that here in japan as well personally i've done auctions that are i mean a lot more than a dozen yeah i've never experienced anything like that right but you shop different things like he shops expensive knives wait wait wait that was just one time i normally bought things like i use for house like home stuff oh yeah or home stuff or vegetables because it was a lot cheaper it happens a lot with clothes if you look at clothes yeah i was gonna say like clothes so they're a little cheap crap yeah just be careful with those and the third thing i've heard of you probably won't come across is people calling up elderly people yeah like hey i need money remember me i'm your family and this again this happens everywhere it's not like a japan thing it's like just a worldwide scam thing we have atm at convenience stores and right in front of the atm it says when you transfer money be careful are you sure you're not scammed there are signs like that really oh i never saw that so be careful yeah it happens right yeah be careful okay also at stations i've seen signs for like be careful chikan which is like pervert or molester like japan is infamous for having this reputation of like creepy guys like touching girls on trains or taking pictures of skirts which is why they have the sound on the cameras here so if you take a picture with your camera like with our our phone camera it always makes noise i still haven't had this happen to me but this is something that happens to some people sometimes so if you are a girl and you're like wearing a short skirt i yeah so subtle yeah next one if you're wearing a short skirt i always wear shorts underneath but that's also just because it's really windy here and i've had some accidents with the wind and not wearing shorts so um just be careful about things like that as well so i would recommend if you were a woman to wear like like thin shorts or something underneath your skirt or dress the most likely things that would happen to you in japan is someone will steal your umbrella if you put it in one of the things outside of konbini while you go inside or someone might steal your bicycle if you leave it unlocked unless you are going to certain kinds of bars or like kyabakura clubs in like roppongi i've heard there are some that will drag you in and then charge you a really high cover fee but you don't go to those kind of places so we're not super knowledgeable about that con number one japan is very crowded especially in city so when i was in college i actually trained to go to school and every morning i was squashed like that's with him oh the celery man and everyone was so packed and i hated it yeah um japan's not actually a very small island it's a decent size but most of it is mountains and most people just live on the small coastal plain areas so even though there's a lot of space everyone's packed into like a couple areas and that's why these areas are so crowded yeah especially tokyo if you're there during the holidays and you're at one of the big stations like shinjuku i literally would get picked up by the crowd on the train and like carried off the train at the stop and you can't really there's nothing you can do about it you're just you're going with them and you know this is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world for people to travel to so there are people all over the world coming here there are people in japan traveling to other parts of japan kyoto was probably one of the worst places we went for traveling it was so beautiful and i still love going there but it was also one of the most disappointing initially because when you look at pictures of kyoto or like these really artsy videos that people take they wait until like people part so they can get a nice shot or wake up super early or they wake up like super early and they go at special times where there aren't people there but that's not how it looks like in real life when you go there there are thousands of other people there just like you yeah just like you just like us we're one of them and so even though these places are like they should be amazing and magical you go there and then there's like thousands of other people and hundreds of them have their cameras out taking pictures and videos exactly like us we are 100% part of the problem but then it just doesn't feel as magical anymore so i grew up here so like i also have been to kyoto before and it was not normal to me i wasn't familiar with it but if you're from not so crowded areas then you might be a little bit disappointed but if not then you might be okay but like my wife she's from not so crowded areas and i just personally prefer non-touristy areas so there are still a lot of really awesome areas in japan that aren't crowded yet especially if they're not as accessible by train so we've made videos on some of those places before that you can go and it still feels like incredibly beautiful and magical and you can have like a fantastic time without the huge crowds and it's kind of weird because by showing you these places we're going to make them more crowded so they will end up becoming more touristy so we're still contributing to the problem but at the same time i don't want to like keep these places to ourselves they're so awesome and i think you guys deserve to know about them and the people who live there deserve to have like more visitors to get like the more tourist money and everything so i think a lot of places we've been to i think they're still worth going yeah kiyomizudera was probably my favorite place in kyoto it's this giant temple built on a mountain and you can see the entire city of kyoto from there and even though there are so many other people there it still feels like you can put yourself back in time and just imagine how amazing this place was before but if you don't like the huge touristy crowds there are also other places you can go that won't be quite as crowded which we've shared before like geibikei gorge and gujohachiman still isn't super crowded except during like the festival season and another tip would be like i said earlier wake up super early in the morning or go there right before they close and you can get to enjoy like whole kiyomizudera for example just by yourself without as many people there yeah and actually my friend who's living in kyoto told me this and she enjoyed kiyomizudera by herself several times before and she loved it so yeah yeah yeah you should try that and you can also try to travel during off seasons so just in general in japan most people travel during spring especially around cherry blossom season which is like early april early august is obon season which is one of japan's biggest holidays everyone's traveling to go see their families so places will be really crowded then as well new year's is really crowded lots of people especially go to like temples and shrines during that time and koyo season in the fall when the leaves are changing color that's also a really popular time to travel the problem is if you go in the winter when it's really cold some places aren't open especially if you're going really rural areas so there won't be a lot of shops for you to shop at the big places like kiyomizudera they're still going to be open but they're still going to be maybe somewhat crowded just not quite as crowded summer is really hot and humid so humid it's not the best for walking outside for long periods of time but some places might not be quite as crowded as spring or fall but honestly i would still recommend people travel during spring or fall even though it's more crowded then just because the weather is much more permitting and everything is going to be open also depending on the places if you go off season then you might not really enjoy anything so just do some research before going there yeah there are so many people giving awesome tips about japan like so many blog websites so many youtube channels so if there's one place in particular you want to go you can just google it and i'm sure you'll be able to find lots of research and advice on when the best time to go is yeah so another tip we can give you guys would be just do some research and find the best timing or season to go yeah yeah all right so we have a whole list of pros and cons but we have already been talking so long for this first pro and con so i think we're going to end this first video here and then we'll do a part two a little bit later on okay um otherwise this video is going to be really long like as we get older like i could just talk forever now i used to be like i couldn't talk at all and i would have been so happy to be me now but now i'm like what am i supposed to do i just went on forever and i'm becoming grandma i'm becoming i'm becoming one of those old people i'm just gonna be able to talk forever i have grandkids and they're gonna be like shut up grandma stop well i hope this was a little bit helpful for you if you have any other tips on traveling in japan then leave them down in the comments for other people otherwise we'll see you in part two bye okay bye

    • But if you don't like the huge touristy crowds, there are also other places you can go that won't be quite as crowded, which we've shared before, like Geibikei Gorge and Gujohachiman.
