It marks just the third leadership-change in Taiwan's history. The 59-year-old received a legal education in Taiwan, the U.S., and the U.K, and then worked as a law-professor in her home-country before joining the Democratic Progressive Party in 2004. President Tsai and the ruling DPP face daunting challenges ahead. They are tasked with fixing the underperforming domestic economy and uneven income distribution, and fostering a positive diplomatic relationship with China.
