You guys know when you're in an area that has no light pollution and you can see the night sky really clearly how bright and beautiful the stars look.

Now you know and I know that those stars are still there during the daytime.

We just can't see them because the sun's so overpowering and you need the sun to go away before you can see the beauty of those stars.

さて、なぜこの話を持ち出したのか？

It hit me the other day I was reading a book and I was going on my phone I was back and forth between the two and I was having a really hard time concentrating.

先日、本を読んでいて、携帯電話を操作していたんだけど、その2つを行ったり来たりしていて、集中するのが本当に大変だったんだ。経験上、本に没頭して深く集中しているときが、本当の意味での「好き」や「不思議」を体験できる可能性が高いことを知っているんだけど、そこに到達するまでに1秒かかることもあって、気が散ってしまうんだ。そのとき、夜空のことが頭に浮かんで、太陽が消えないと星は見えないんだと気づいたんだ。

And I know from experience that I'm really likely to experience true like and wonder when I'm really deep into a book and deep in focus.

But sometimes it takes a second for me to get there and I'm distractible and then the thought about the night sky came to me, and I realized I can't see the stars until the sun goes away.

The sun is too bright it's too intense I need some nighttime and I thought that's just like reading in my phone.

太陽は眩しすぎる......強烈すぎる......夜が必要だ......携帯で読書するのと同じだと思った。

The phone and my TV and my radio and whatever else.

電話、テレビ、ラジオ、その他なんでも、それらは素晴らしいものだけど、太陽のように強烈すぎて、威圧的で、他のすべてを遮ってしまうんだ。

They're wonderful things, but like the sun, they're too intense they're too overpowering and they block everything else out.

It takes some time for your eyes to acclimate to dark.

The same way that when you turn the lights off in your house. You're blind for a minute, but then you can finally see.

If I really want to see the beauty of the stars in all these books, I need to put those other things away.

Not because I hate them, not because I think it's bad, but because they're so bright.

And I know and I trust that if I put them away and I wait a while and I open a book, after a while, the stars will come out.
