Tequila.

テキーラ。

That little golden liquid that many of us associate with a good night out.

私たちの多くが楽しい夜を連想する、あの小さな黄金の液体。

Did you know that in America over 50 million liters of tequila are drunk every year?

アメリカでは毎年5000万リットル以上のテキーラが飲まれていることをご存知だろうか？

There are lots of interesting facts about this little liquid, but one in particular has something to do with where I am right now.

この小さな液体には興味深い事実がたくさんあるが、特に私が今いる場所に関係していることがある。

Here in the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, in the largest bat collection in the world.

ここスミソニアン国立自然史博物館には、世界最大のコウモリ・コレクションがある。

And I know just the right person to talk to.

Ah, yeah, the tequila connection.

ああ、そうだ、テキーラつながりだ。

Uh, it involves this little bat right here, Leptonycteris nivalis, which is a species of nectar feeding bat that occurs in Mexico and migrates up into the southwestern US every year.

メキシコに生息し、毎年アメリカ南西部に移動してくる蜜を吸うコウモリの一種だ。

Tequila liquor is made from agave plants and this little species of bat, Leptonycteris.

テキーラ酒はリュウゼツランとこの小さなコウモリの一種、レプトニクテリスから作られる。

Has evolved to feed on the nectar of agave flowers.

リュウゼツランの花の蜜を食べるように進化した。

And in the process of doing that, it pollinates agaves.

そしてその過程で、リュウゼツランに受粉する。

Moves the pollen from one plant to the other by sticking its long muzzle and a very long tongue, which can be up to about a third the body length of the bat.

長いマズルと、コウモリの体長の3分の1にもなる非常に長い舌を突き出して、花粉を植物から植物へと移動させる。

Wow.

すごいね。

Into that flower to the base of the flower where the nectar is, gets its meal and in the process the fur gets covered with pollen from the agave flower.

その花の中に入り、蜜のある花の根元まで行き、食事を取り、その過程で毛皮はリュウゼツランの花粉で覆われる。

The bat moves it on to the next flower.

コウモリはそれを次の花に移す。

As it goes about its nightly feeding.

夜な夜な餌を食べに行くのだ。

Okay.

So, do bats only pollinate agave or does it get other?

コウモリが受粉させるのはリュウゼツランだけですか？

No, no.

いや、違う。

They, they pollinate lots of species of plants.

彼らは多くの種類の植物に受粉する。

This is just one species of nectar feeding bat, but there's actually hundreds of nectar feeding bats.

これは蜜を吸うコウモリの1種に過ぎないが、実際には何百という蜜を吸うコウモリがいる。

And many of them feed on many, many different species of of flowers, uh, during the course of the year.

So, probably all told bats are responsible for pollinating.

Of species of plants.

And so we know like, you know, bees and birds might be attracted to flowers because of the way they smell.

Do bats get attracted to the flowers in the same way?

Yes, they do, so the all of the flowers, all of the plants that are bat pollinated, the flowers are open at night.

And.

They have a whole series of morphological adaptations to attract bats.

コウモリを引き寄せるために、一連の形態的適応がなされているのだ。

Since they're open at night, they're usually whitish or greenish in color.

They're not very brightly colored like plants that are trying to attract.

Uh, birds, for instance, are frequently red.

例えば、鳥はよく赤くなる。

Bat pollinated flowers usually white, they usually do have an odor, but the odor is frequently not terribly attractive to us.

コウモリが受粉させた花は通常白色で、臭いがあるが、その臭いは私たちにはあまり魅力的でないことが多い。

It's not the normal sweet smelling flowers, roses and the like that we're used to.

私たちが慣れ親しんでいる甘い香りのする花やバラなどではない。

Rather it has a very intense, almost overripe smell to it and so it's kind of like a rotten smell.

Yeah, almost a rotten smell in many cases.

Well, so we definitely wouldn't want those in our house then.

They don't make great house ones.
