Today I'm in Yamagata Prefecture.

今日は山形県に来ています。

In shown a town which is pretty close to the coast on the Japan sea side of Northern Japan.

北日本の日本海側にある海岸に近い町です。

This has actually become one of my favorite spots in Northern Japan this year.

実は今年、北日本で一番好きなスポットのひとつになったんです。

I've been out here a couple of times to visit my friend Nowitzki who is from this area and I just fell in love with.

この地域出身の友人ノビツキーに会いに何度か来たことがあるのですが、とにかく惚れ惚れしましたね。

It is so gorgeous.

とてもゴージャスです。

Today, I'm actually joining a cycling tour of the area.

今日は、実はこの地域のサイクリングツアーに参加しているんです。

We're going to cycle through the countryside and make some stops at a different site, Seeing spots along the way and basically just get to know the area a little more.

田園地帯を自転車で走り、途中、別の場所に立ち寄ったり、スポットを見たりして、基本的にはこの地域をもう少し知るつもりです。

We're starting off somewhere where I'm going to make a present for my grandma actually.

実はおばあちゃんへのプレゼントを作ろうというところからスタートしているんです。

So let's go do that after the major restoration in the late 1800s.

だから、1800年代後半の大修復の後、それをやりに行こうというわけだ。

The Samurai of the Shonan area had to give up their sword fighting days and find a new way to live.

湘南の武士たちは、剣の道を捨て、新たな生き方を模索することになった。

The two major exports at the time were raw silk and tea.

当時の二大輸出品といえば、生糸と茶。

So they decided to transform the Shonan area into what has now become one of the most famous silk producers in all.

そこで、彼らは湘南地区を、現在では世界有数の絹織物の産地として生まれ変わらせることを決意したのです。

So I have to choose the color now and it's really hard if you only use the natural sakura color.

だから、これから色を選ばなければならないのですが、自然の桜色だけだと本当に大変なんです。

This is what you will end up with golden yellow color.

これが黄金色に仕上がるのです。

But if you add some other dice to it, you can kind of make it more slightly on the pink side, which I think my grandma would like my grandma likes it.

でも、他のダイスを加えると、なんというか、もっとほんのりピンク色になって、おばあちゃんが好きそうな味になるんです。

It's a pretty pink color, which she wears a lot.

可愛いピンク色で、よく着ているそうです。

So I think it's perfect alright now for the best part.

We're picking up our bikes.

These are electric bikes that we're using today.

I absolutely love these.

If you get kind of tired riding throughout the day, you just turn the electric boost on and it's super easy.

一日中乗っていてちょっと疲れたら、電動ブーストをオンにすればいいだけなので、とても楽です。

Honestly joining a cycling trip for the day is not only the perfect way to experience the japanese countryside, it's also a really great way to meet new people and make some new friends.

サイクリングに参加することは、日本の田舎を体験するのに最適な方法であるだけでなく、新しい人と出会い、新しい友人を作るのに本当に良い方法だと思います。

Our next stop is Hanabusa soy sauce brewery, which was founded in 18 23 and has been passed down for 15 generations.

次に訪れたのは、18 23年に創業し、15代にわたって受け継がれている花房醤油の醸造所です。

What makes this brewery so special is how committed they are to continuing the traditional manufacturing methods.

この醸造所が特別なのは、伝統的な製造方法を継続することにこだわっていることです。

Ramen restaurants in the area proudly display made with Hanabusa soy sauce on their shop signs as it's known for being especially delicious.

この地域のラーメン店では、「花咲かじいさん」の醤油を使ったラーメンが特においしいと評判で、店の看板に誇らしげに掲げられています。

It's over 100 years old.

100年以上前のものです。

It's really cool.

本当にかっこいいんです。

It's so different than the other soy sauce factories I've been to.

今まで行ったことのある醤油工場とは全然違う。

So yeah, we're gonna get a little tour of the place and then we're going to do some tasting and I can't wait because it smells amazing in here.

そうそう、これからちょっと見学して、それから試飲をするんだけど、ここの匂いはすごいから待ちきれないよ。

Okay, so the first thing we're going to try is this cognac that's been stewed in soy sauce.

では、まず最初にこのコニャックを醤油で煮込んだものを試してみましょう。

We're about to eat the famous Shona persimmons.

これから有名な庄名柿を食べます。

They're dried and this is my favorite way to eat them because they become so sweet.

乾燥させると、とても甘くなるので、この食べ方が一番好きです。

No, that was delicious.

いや、美味しかったですね。

Everything was so good and I'm definitely gonna come back here and buy a bottle of soy sauce because I don't want to go back to using my usual soy sauce.

全部がとても美味しくて、いつものお醤油に戻りたくないので、絶対ここに戻ってきてお醤油のボトルを買うつもりです。

This is so much better.

She's going to give me some Hoshi ga key to hang up on my porch and dry them myself in Morioka.

I'm getting hungry after all this bike riding.

It looks so good.

I love hummus and it doesn't really exist in Japan except for when you go to like specialty cafes, we're gonna eat this super quick.

私はフムスが大好きなのですが、日本では専門店のようなカフェに行く以外はあまり存在しません。

That was one of the best meals I've had in Japan actually that was amazing.

日本で食べた食事の中で一番おいしかったよ......素晴らしかった。

The vegetables tasted so fresh.

野菜がとても新鮮な味わいでした。

I'm really excited about that.

本当に楽しみですね。

I feel good and healthy now and we're about to cycle for seven km.

今は体調も良く、これから7kmのサイクリングです。

So, so this is so koji temple, it's so nice.

だから、だから、ここはとても麹菌のお寺で、とても素敵なんです。

It feels so refreshing because it's in the shade and it's just surrounded by streams, little fountains.

We're going to have a little tea break here, have some macha and we're going to do a buddhist meditation activity called Shake Yo you guys will see a little bit more about that when we do it.

So today we are trying out shake Yo, the mindful tracing of the buddhist sutra is using a calligraphy pen originally started as a way of spreading the teachings of buddha.

そこで今日は、もともと仏陀の教えを広めるために始まった書道ペンを使って、お経をなぞるマインドフルネスに挑戦してみましょう。

Nowadays, Shakya is practiced as a way of relaxing and purifying oneself both mentally and physically.

Many buddhist temples in Japan offer this experience for their visitors.

That was so nice and relaxing.

I really recommend dropping into a buddhist temple.

仏教のお寺に立ち寄るのは本当におすすめです。

If there's one in the area that you're visiting, you can just pop in, have some match to enjoy the beautiful views in their gardens.

もし、お近くにあるのなら、ちょっと立ち寄って、お庭で美しい景色を楽しみながら、お抹茶をいただくのもいいですね。

It's really common for them to have a little activities like that that you can enjoy here.

そんなちょっとしたアクティビティが、ここで楽しめるのは、本当によくあることなんです。

We're off to watch a maiko performance now, which I've actually never seen before.

これから舞妓さんの公演を見に行くのですが、実はまだ一度も見たことがないんです。

So back during the Edo period, Sakata City, this area here was a famous shipping ports.

江戸時代、酒田市はこの辺り一帯が有名な船着き場だったんですね。

So because of that they had a really thriving entertainment industry including geisha and maiko performances and some of those establishments are still around today and that's where we're going now.

そのため、芸者や舞妓などの芸能が盛んで、現在もそのような店がいくつか残っています。

We're going to a place called tomorrow and we're going to see a Maiko performance Morning.

明日という場所に行って、舞妓さんのパフォーマンス「朝」を見るんだ。

That was so cool to see the micro performance.

マイクロの演奏はとてもかっこよかったですね。

I've never seen one before and I expected it to be more subtle, but apparently the style of dance that they use up here in Sakata is a little more lively and yeah, it was um, it was really beautiful to watch.

私は初めて見たので、もっと繊細なものかと思っていましたが、どうやらこの酒田で使われている踊りのスタイルは、もう少し生き生きとしているようで、うん、見ていて本当にきれいでした。

Their singing was just like I was blown away by that.

彼らの歌声は、まさに私が吹き飛ばされたようなものでした。
