I want to tell you guys a story about a place called pompeii, it's relevant to this time and anytime really.

ポンペイという場所の話を皆さんにしたいのですが、これは今の時代にも、本当にいつの時代にも関係する話です。

Have you guys heard of pompeii?

皆さんはポンペイをご存知でしょうか？

I have.

That's that ruin isn't it?

それがあの廃墟なんですね。

That's right.

そうなんです。

So a very long time ago there was a volcanic eruption on Mount Vesuvius in the italian city of pompeii now because this was a very long time ago there was no social media like there is today, there was no television, there was no mobile phones, there wasn't even radio, that's how long ago this was like around the time you were born miss.

大昔、イタリアのポンペイにあるヴェスヴィオ山で火山の噴火がありました。

Very clever.

とても賢いですね。

So because there was no way to warn people because of this lack of technology at the time.

つまり、当時はこの技術がなかったために、警告のしようがなかったからです。

Nobody in pompeii knew how ferociously the volcano was going to erupt Tragically over 2000 people died almost instantly.

ポンペイでは、火山がどれほど激しく噴火するのか、誰も知らなかった。

However as tragic as it was.

Those people died living life, they died while having dinner with their families playing with their Children?

その人たちは人生を生きて死んだ、家族と一緒に夕食をとりながら、子供たちと遊んでいるときに死んだのか？

Some of them even died in the act of making love?

中には、愛し合う中で死んでしまった人もいるのでは？

Some people might argue that if there was better technology at the time, more lives could have been saved.

当時、もっと優れた技術があれば、もっと多くの人命が救えたはずだという意見もあるだろう。

Others might say that those people knew how to live more than we do in current society.

また、その人たちは、今の社会の私たち以上に生き方を知っていたと言えるかもしれません。

What do I mean by that?

どういうことかというと

Because there was no information, there was no fear.

情報がなかったからこそ、恐怖もなかった。

How does that compare to us in today's world with all of this technology that we have?

それは、これだけテクノロジーが発達した現代の私たちと比べてどうなのでしょうか？

Do we really know how to live better?

私たちは、よりよく生きる方法を本当に知っているのだろうか。

We're definitely on the earth for a longer time than ever before.

私たちは間違いなく、これまでよりも長い時間、地球上に存在しているのです。

But so many of us are spending our days worrying about everything on the news, whether it's the next virus or the next war or the next pandemic.

しかし、私たちの多くは、次のウイルスや次の戦争、次のパンデミックなど、ニュースのすべてを気にしながら日々を過ごしているのです。

And look, I'm not saying to be reckless or live foolishly.

無茶をしろとか、バカな生き方をしろとは言いません。

Not at all.

そんなことはありません。

But do you want to live every day or just survive?

しかし、あなたは毎日を生きたいのか、それともただ生き延びたいのか？

Ask yourself, does it feel good to take in every piece of doomsday information that comes across the news or does it feel better to live your life regardless of what is or isn't happening in the world?

ニュースで流れてくる破滅的な情報をいちいち取り入れるのは気分がいいのか、それとも、世の中で何が起きているのか、起きていないのかに関係なく自分の人生を生きる方が気分がいいのか、自問自答してみてください。

We can't live in the no miss, we don't know what's happening.

ノーミスのままでは生きていけない、何が起きているのかわからない。

Sure.

もちろんです。

But don't you think you would find out the crucial pieces of information that you need to know regardless of if you watch the news every day.

でも、毎日ニュースを見ていても、肝心な情報はわかると思いませんか？

Wouldn't you feel better if you spent less time on your phone, Would you feel better if you were living your life instead of taking in the fear of others, instead of comparing yourself to others?

携帯電話を使う時間を減らせば、もっといい気分になれるのでは？ 他人の恐怖を取り込むのではなく、他人と自分を比較するのではなく、自分の人生を生きていれば、もっといい気分になれるのでは？

Wouldn't it be better if you didn't judge other people for living in a way that's different to how you do?

自分とは違う生き方をしている人を批判しないほうがいいのでは？

I don't know about you guys, but I want to leave while I'm here, not in a reckless way, but in a way that ensures that I can make a positive impact on the world while I'm in it.

君たちはどうかわからないが、私はここにいる間に、無謀な方法ではなく、私がいる間に世界に良い影響を与えられるような方法で、出発したいのだ。

So that's what the point of all of this is.
