It's nice, isn't it?

いいじゃないですか。

And we used three words.

そして、3つの言葉を使いました。

They're expensive, Pricey and deer and they're all synonyms.

高い、プライスレス、ディアと同義語なんです。

They all mean that something costs a lot of money and they're the topic of this program.

どれも「お金がかかる」という意味で、この番組のトピックになっています。

That's right, synonyms are words that have the same or similar meanings and english speakers use a lot of synonyms so it's good to learn a few.

そうです、同義語とは同じか似たような意味を持つ言葉のことで、英語圏の人は同義語をたくさん使うので、少し覚えておくとよいでしょう。

It certainly is.

確かにそうですね。

So let's start by listening to rob and mike discussing a television advert.

では、まずロブとマイクがテレビ広告について話しているのを聞いてみましょう。

Think about this question while you listen, what kind of pet do mix kids have?

この質問を聞きながら考えてみてください。ミックスの子供たちはどんなペットを飼っているのでしょうか？

And what was strange about it?

そして、何が不思議だったのか。

You know that funny advert where the vet thinks he's dealing with a dead cat.

獣医が死んだ猫を扱ったつもりでいる面白い広告があるじゃないですか。

But really it's a furry hat.

でも、本当は毛皮の帽子なんです。

Yeah it's hilarious that look on the vets faces.

そうですね......退役軍人の顔は滑稽です。

So comical and the girls expression when she picks up her hat is priceless.

とてもコミカルで、帽子を拾ったときの女の子の表情は貴重です。

Strange thing is the same thing happened to me.

不思議なことに、私にも同じことが起こりました。

Quite bizarre actually.

実に奇妙なことだ。

I was holding the kids hamster while they were cleaning the cage.

ケージの掃除の間、子供のハムスターを抱いていた。

I thought it was a bit odd because it wasn't moving.

動かないので、ちょっとおかしいと思ったんです。

My daughter gave me a weird look and asked why I was stroking one of her gloves.

娘に変な顔をされ、なぜ手袋の片方を撫でているのかと聞かれました。

So what kind of pet do Mike's kids have And what was strange about it?

では、マイクの子供たちはどんなペットを飼っていて、何が不思議だったのでしょうか？

It was quite strange.

かなり不思議な感じでした。

The answer is they have a hamster but Mike thought it was a bit odd because it wasn't moving now.

答えは、ハムスターを飼っているのですが、マイクは今動いていないので、ちょっとおかしいと思ったのだそうです。

Strange and odd are synonyms.

Strangeとoddは同義語です。

They both mean unusual.

どちらも珍しいという意味です。

Listen to this clip for two more words that mike uses to mean strange or unusual.

このクリップで、マイクが奇妙な、珍しいという意味で使うもう2つの単語を聞いてみてください。

So we heard the word bizarre, spelled B I Z A R R E, which means strange and difficult to explain.

そこで、奇妙な、説明が難しいという意味のB I Z A R R Eと綴られたbizarreという言葉を聞いたのです。

Mike thought the situation was bizarre.

マイクは、この状況を異様だと思った。

We also heard weird spelt W E I R D, which also means very unusual.

また、W E I R Dという変なスペルも聞きましたが、これも非常に珍しいという意味です。

Let's listen to another clip with some more synonyms and this time try to spot three words that mean funny.

今度は、同義語を含む別のクリップを聞いて、面白いという意味の単語を3つ見つけてみてください。

獣医が猫の死体を扱ったつもりが、実は毛皮の帽子だったという面白い広告をご存知でしょうか。

So hilarious.

とても愉快です。

Comical and priceless are all synonyms of funny but they mean funny in a slightly different way.

ComicalもPricelessもfunnyの同義語だが、funnyの意味は少し違う。

Hilarious means very funny in the sense that it makes you laugh out loud.

Hilariousとは、声を出して笑ってしまうような、とても面白いという意味です。

Comical means funny in a silly way and priceless can mean extremely funny.

Comicalはバカバカしいほど面白いという意味で、pricelessは非常に面白いという意味になります。

We usually only use it with this meaning when we're speaking.

普段はこの意味で使うのは、話すときだけです。

There are some other synonyms of funny too, including humorous and amusing.

また、funnyの同義語には、humorousやamusingなどがある。

And in the clip we heard two noun synonyms look and expression both meaning the way someone shows on their face what they're thinking or feeling foolishness to BBC learning english.

そして、このクリップでは、lookとexpressionという2つの名詞の同義語を聞きました。どちらも、誰かが考えていることや感じていることを顔に表すという意味で、BBC learning englishの愚問です。

And we're talking about synonyms like strange and odd and funny and amusing.

そして、strangeやodd、funnyやamusingといった類義語の話です。

Now a word of warning, we can't always use any synonym to replace a word.

さて、注意点ですが、言葉の置き換えにどんな同義語でも使えるとは限りません。

It depends on the context and exactly what we're trying to say.

それは文脈と、まさに私たちが言おうとしていることによります。

That's right.

そうなんです。

So for example at the beginning of the program I said that my new phone was pricey spelled P R I C E Y.

例えば番組の冒頭で私は、新しい携帯電話はP R I C E Yというスペルで値段が高いと言っていました。

And I also used the word dear spelled D E A R and both words are synonyms of expensive but Pricey is more informal and more modern than deer.

そして、Dearという単語もD E A Rと綴り、どちらもexpensiveの対義語ですが、ディアよりもプライシーの方がインフォーマルでモダンな印象です。

So you won't see those written down very much.

だから、あまり書かれているのを見ることはないでしょう。

Not much, no.

あまり、ないですね。

And our top tip for learning vocabulary is use a thesaurus which is a dictionary of synonyms to help you find new words and make your english more interesting and look for example sentences with each word to help you choose the right word for each situation and now it's time for a quiz which is the odd one out.

そして、ボキャブラリー学習の一番の秘訣は、類義語を集めた辞書を使い、新しい単語を見つけ、英語をより面白くすることです。また、それぞれの単語を使った例文を見て、それぞれの状況に合った単語を選ぶことができます。そして、次は変わり種クイズの時間です。

Number one a expensive be deer.

1番高いのは鹿です。

See cheap that one is c cheap because the other two both mean costing a lot of money.

他の2つはどちらもお金がかかるということなので、その1つを安く見てください。

Very good and number two a bizarre.

非常に良いし、2番は奇想天外だ。

Be hilarious.

愉快になること。

See weird And the answer is b hilarious because bizarre and weird are both synonyms of strange.

See weird そして、b bizarreとweirdはどちらもstrangeの同義語なので、答えはb hilariousです。

# three humorous be hilarious, see expression and the answer to that is C expression because the other two are both synonyms of funny and that's the end of the quiz.

# 3位 humorous be hilarious, see expressionで、他の2つはどちらもfunnyの同義語なので答えはC expression、これでクイズは終了です。
