and today I'm going to tell you the differences between 'until' and 'by'.

今日は"until"と"by"の違いについて説明していきます。

We use 'until' to talk about doing something up to a certain point in time.

"until"はある時まで何かをするという時に使います。

If I say:

私が次のように言うとします。

I have to take care of my dog until 5pm,

私は午後5時まで犬の世話をしなければいけない。

it means I will start taking care of my dog now

これは私が今犬の世話をし始めて

and stop taking care of it at 5pm.

午後5時に世話をし終わるという意味です。

On the other hand,

一方で

we use 'by' to talk about doing something before a future time or deadline.

"by"は未来のある時、または締め切りまでに何かをするという時に使います。

If I say:

私が次のように言うとします。

I have to finish an essay by 5pm,

私は午後5時までにエッセイを仕上げなければいけない。

it means I can start any time

これは私がいつ書き始めても良いけれど

but I will make sure that at 5pm I have finished writing the essay.

午後5時までに必ずエッセイを書き終わるようにするという意味です。

So, I may even finish it at 3pm or any time before 5.

つまり、午後3時に書き終わるかもしれないし、午後5時以前のいつかかもしれないのです。

So we use 'until' to describe doing something up to a certain point in time

"Until"はある時まで何かをし続けることを表し

and we use 'by' to describe doing something before a future time or deadline.

そして"by"は未来のある時または締め切りまでに、何かをすることを表します。
