I just landed in Sacramento and I'm here to visit a zero-waste family, which I've been following on Instagram for about a year.

たった今、サクラメントに到着しました。これから私がインスタグラムで1年ほどフォローしている「ゴミ廃棄量ゼロ」ファミリーを訪ねていきたいと思います。

And I'm really excited to meet them, 'cause I want to see how a family lives zero waste.

どうやったらゴミを全く出さずに生活が出来るのかこの目で見られるということで、とても楽しみです。

This is how much trash that our family made in six months.

過去6か月で我が家から出たゴミがこれです。

We're a family of four and we try to live as low waste and plant-based as possible.

我が家は4人家族で、出来る限りベジタリアンかつゴミの廃棄量を押さえるようにして暮らしています。

Our family is able to create less waste because we shop at the farmer's market, we shop at our bulk store, and we eat plant-based.

私たちの家族がゴミを出さないのは、ファーマーズ・マーケットやバルクストアで買い物をして、ベジタリアンの食生活をしているからです。

This is not all of our trash, this is just the trash that we've kept that is gonna go to the landfill.

これが全部のゴミというわけではなくて、埋立地に行く種類のゴミは私たちで保管しているんです。

We also recycle and compost.

うちではリサイクルもしますし、肥料も作ります。

This is our compost, it's our weekly pickup.

これが堆肥ですね、1週間の分です。

This is our paper recycling.

これが紙のリサイクル。

This is usually full of my stuff, of aluminum.

これはだいたい私の出すゴミ、アルミ缶ですね。

They fed me an amazing lunch and then we headed to the co-op to do some shopping.

美味しいランチをごちそうになってから、車に乗って買い物に出掛けました。

Yeah, we're really lucky.

That way you only have to pay for what's inside, not the weight of the jar.

I'm gonna get some of this extra virgin olive oil and I can just fill it up out of here with no plastic.

このエキストラバージンオリーブオイルを買って、プラスチック無しの容器にこうやって入れていきます。

They have the mason jars that are already tared here so you can just purchase one if you forget your own, it has the tare weight on it.

あらかじめ重さが書いてある容器も売ってるから、自分の容器を持ってこなかった場合でもここで買えるんです。

I got to get my bulk on while I'm here.

The Co-Op has brought on bulk tofu which is amazing because it's local and organic and there's no plastic packaging.

ここの農協ではバルクの豆腐も売っていて、地元の産物でオーガニック、しかもプラスチックの容器も一切使われていないということで素晴らしいです。

What did your kitchen use to look like before you went zero-waste?

ゴミ廃棄ゼロに移行する前のキッチンの様子ってどんな感じだった？

It was stuffed to the brim with plastic, like it was really hard to see in the fridge even, because we would just, would go to Costco or to Trader Joe's and stuff and just get foods that were wrapped in plastic because I mean that's just how things come, unfortunately.

プラスチックだらけで、冷蔵庫に何が入ってるのかを見るのも難しいくらいで、例えばコストコとかトレーダー・ジョーに行ってプラスチックの容器に入った食材を買うんだけど、残念ながら今ではそういったことが普通の社会だから。

Here's my pantry.

これがパントリーです。

In here I've got all my spices.

ここにはスパイス類が入っていて。

So I store most of our stuff in mason jars just because it's so convenient.

ほとんどの物はガラス容器に入れますね、とても便利だから。

I honestly cannot believe your pantry, I'm so jealous.

ホントにこのパントリーはうらやましい感じ。

It's like, beautiful.

だってほら、きれいに整ってるもん。

Look at it, it's amazing.

見てこれ、スゴイでしょ。

It's really nice to be able to see everything in there.

中に入ってるものが一目でわかるっていうのは本当に良い感じね。

I came to a plant-based diet after I was looking for a way to heal my body holistically from rheumatoid arthritis.

ベジタリアンメインの食生活になったのは、関節リウマチから身体全体を健康に戻すための方法を模索した結果ですね。

And, after I started eating that way I started to feel really good and so I got my family to eat that way too.

こういう食生活に変えてから本当に身体の調子が良くなったんで、他の家族もその食生活に切り替えたんです。

And it felt amazing and it also ties in a lot with zero-waste and sustainability.

そうしたらやっぱり調子が良くなって、それがそのままゴミの排気量ゼロやサステイナブルな生活につながっているんです。

We got into zero-waste by me coming across Bea Johnson in an article, and I was really inspired by the way that she was able to live and create less waste.

ゴミの廃棄ゼロのコンセプトは私がベア・ジョンソンの記事を読んだのがきっかけで、彼女がこんなにもゴミを出さずに生活できているっていうことに大きな感銘を受けたんです。

And so we went really in at first of trying to get everything zero-waste and it just didn't work that way for us.

そこで、家族みんなでゴミの廃棄量を完璧にゼロにしようとあれこれ試したんだけど、なかなか思い通りにはいかなくて。

And so we scaled back and just did more manageable steps one at a time.

そこで少し規模を縮小して、できる範囲でまずは始めてみたんですね。

And built our habits that way.

そこから習慣を少しずつ身に付けていったというか。

Eating zero-waste and plant-based for the family has been very beneficial.

ゴミを出さないようにベジタリアンの食事をするっていうのは、私たち家族にとってかなり有益ですね。

We're finding ourselves getting sick less often.

病気にかかる頻度も以前より少なくなったし

We're eating as a family as a whole: all pitching in, cooking together, going to farmer's market.

家族みんなで協力して一緒に料理して、ファーマーズ・マーケットにも買い物に行って、

The kids are growing it, they're seeing it from seed to plate.

子どもたちも野菜を育てて、種から食卓に乗るまでのプロセスを見ているわけですし。

I think that overall we have ended up saving money as far as not any of our food going to waste.

全体的には食材が無駄になっていないというだけお金を節約できていると思います。

We use all the food that we buy.

買った食材は全部使い切りますし

And as far as not getting any disposable products, it's a lot less expensive that way because all our stuff is being reused.

使い捨て商品も買っていないし、ほとんどが再利用されているんで費用も抑えられています。

The other kids are surprised at my lunches because I don't think they have ever, really seen something like that.

他の子は私のランチ見て結構ビックリしてます、こんな感じのランチって今まで全然見たことないと思うから。

So it's a new thing for them.

だから、目新しいことなんです。

I'm gonna shuck some corn with the kids!

We got toothpaste, homemade toothpaste.

I make our own toothpaste with baking soda and coconut oil and peppermint essential oil.
