Let's start with informal conversations on the phone in English.

英語で、インフォーマルな会話を行う方法からスタートします。

These are when you call a friend or maybe a family member in English, and you're just chatting about getting together, or you just want to talk.

友達や家族に英語で電話して、皆で集まる時のことについて話したり、ただ単におしゃべりしたい場合です。

This is something that is a little bit less common nowadays because you're more likely to send a text message to a friend or family member, and we don't use home landlines as often.

こういった電話は、最近ではあまりしなくなっていますよね。友達や家族にはメールを送る方が可能性が高いし、固定電話を使うこともあまりありません。

You're more likely to use your cell phone.

携帯電話を使いますよね。

You're not really going to leave a voicemail, you're probably going to send a text instead.

留守番電話にメッセージを残すのではなく、メールを送るでしょう。

So if you have learned phone conversations at school a long time ago, it might be a little bit simpler now because there's not as many options.

ずっと昔に、学校で、電話での会話方法を学習したでしょうか？今は選択肢が昔ほど多くないので、少しシンプルになっているかもしれませんね。

Let's take a look at two conversations that are informal on the phone, and you'll see how straightforward and simple these can be.

電話でのインフォーマルな会話、2種類見てみましょう。すごく簡単でシンプルなのが、わかりますよ。

Hi, is this Daniel?

もしもし、ダニエル？

Yes, it is.

そうだよ。

Hi, is this Daniel?

もしもし、ダニエル？

Yes, it is.

No, sorry, you have the wrong number.

いえ、番号が間違っていますよ。

Oh, sorry. Thanks.

Pretty simple and straight forward.

かなりシンプルで、簡単です。

Well, if you're going to talk on the phone in a formal situation.

フォーマルな場面で、電話での会話をする場合はどうでしょう。

Let's say for your job you need to call another department, or you need to talk with some customers.

仕事で、別の部署に電話をしないといけない時、もしくは、お客さんと話さないといけない時です。

This is going to be a little more serious because you want to be polite, you don't want to be rude, and you want to make sure that they can understand exactly what you're saying.

すこし真面目になりますね。丁寧に対応したいですし、自分の言っていることを、相手にきちんと理解してもらいたいですから。

So let's take a little bit more time to talk about formal English conversations.

少し時間をとって、フォーマルな英会話についてお話ししましょう。

Let's start with a basic beginning to a conversation that you might have at your workplace in English.

職場で行う可能性のある、英語でのベーシックな会話の始め方を見てみましょう。

Hi, may I please speak with Daniel?

もしもし、ダニエルに代わっていただけますか？

Speaking.

僕ですが。

How can I help you?

どうしましたか？

Hi, may I please speak with Daniel?

もしもし、ダニエルに代わっていただけますか？

Speaking.

僕ですが。

How can I help you?

どうしましたか？

This one was pretty clear, right?

これはかなり明確ですよね。

You call someone, the person picks up the phone, and they want to talk.

誰かに電話して、その人が電話をとり、話します。

They have time to talk.

互いに、話す時間があります。

But what if you call a secretary and you want to talk with the marketing department?

でも、秘書に電話をかけて、マーケティング部と話したい時はどうするのでしょうか？

Well, maybe they're available, maybe they're not, maybe the person wants to ask you some questions to see if the marketing department actually wants to talk to you.

話したい相手は都合が良いかもしれないし、そうでないかもしれない。電話をとった秘書も、マーケティング部に取り次ぐべきか確認するため、あなたに少し質問があるかもしれません。

It could get a little more complicated.

少し複雑になるかもしれませんね。

So let's talk about three different scenarios.

3種類のシナリオで話してみましょう。

Let's imagine that you're calling to marketing department, and the person who picks up the phone answers affirmatively, then they answer with some kind of filter question, and then they answer negatively.

あなたがマーケティング部に電話をしたとして、電話をとった人が、肯定的に答える場合。簡単な質問に対応する場合。そして、否定的に答える場合。

What do those three different conversations look like?

こういった3種類の会話は、どうなるでしょうか？

Let's listen.

Yes, just one moment.

I'm sorry, the manager of the marketing department is in a meeting right now.

すみません、マーケティング部長は、会議中です。

Would you like to leave a message?

メッセージを残しますか？

No, thanks.

いえ、結構です。

When would be a good time to call back?

いつかけ直したら良いでしょうか？

Maybe in about an hour.

1時間後くらいですね。

Okay, I'll do that.

分かりました、かけ直します。

So far you've heard a lot of questions that use, "May I ..." or, "Would you ..."

ここまで、"May I..."や"Would you..."といった、たくさんの質問を聞きましたね。

These are really polite words in English, and if you incorporate these in your conversations you're going to take your politeness and formalness to the next level.

これらは英語で、すごく丁寧な表現です。これらを会話に組み込むことで、丁寧さやフォーマルさのレベルを、一段階上げることができます。

So even if you don't use these exact sentences, if you use, "May I ...", "Would you ...," "Would you mind ...", these are going to make your sentences more polite.

今回のような文章をそっくり使わなくても、"May I...", "Would you...", "Would you mind..."と言うことで、文章をより丁寧にすることができるのです。

In our final scenario, let's image that you call someone, they're not available, so you leave a message and ask if they can call you back later.

最後のシナリオでは、誰かに電話したけれど相手が出ず、留守番メッセージを残して、後でかけ直してくれるか尋ねてみましょう。

What does that conversation look like, especially the beginning because you're introducing who you are, why you're calling.

会話はどのようになるのでしょうか？特に冒頭部分に注目ですね。あなたが誰なのか、なぜ電話しているのかを伝えます。

Let's take a look at it.

それでは行ってみましょう。

Hi, this is Vanessa from the marketing department at Apple, I'm returning your call from earlier today.

もしもし、アップルのヴァネッサです。今日、先ほどお電話いただいていたのを折り返しているのですが。

Thanks for calling me back.

おかけ直し、ありがとうございます。

I wanted to ask you if you'd like to join me and take over the galaxy.

一緒にギャラクシーを買収しないかと思って、お電話したんです。

Thank you.

どうも。

Okay, okay, so maybe if you have a business conversation you're not going to be talking about taking over the galaxy together, but, the beginning of the sentence is going to be same: "Thanks for calling me back."

まあ、まあ。ビジネス会話で、ギャラクシーの共同買収なんで話さないでしょうが、冒頭部分は同じですよ。「おかけ直し、ありがとうございます」です。

Thanks for calling me back, it's just straightforward, and clear, and simple.

このThanks for calling me backというのは、簡潔で明確、シンプルです。

I hope that this will be easy for you to remember, and if it's not you can always write some notes and leave them at your desk so that you can remember this expression.

これ、簡単に覚えられると良いですね。もし覚えられなくても、メモを書いて自分のデスクに置いておけば、この表現を思い出せます。
