I want you to think about someone that you really like.

皆さんがとても好きな人を誰か想像してみてください。

It can be a celebrity, a family member, a friend, or even a fictional character.

有名人でもいいですし、家族の誰か、友人とか、実在はしない人でも構いません。

For the purposes of this video, I'm just going to use a celebrity that almost everyone likes as an example.

このビデオ用に、私は例としてほぼ誰でも好きな有名人を挙げて進めていきたいと思います。

I'm going to use Keanu Reeves, the guy from the Matrix and John Wick.

マトリックスやジョン・ウィックに出演したキアヌ・リーブスです。

Now what's so special about Keanu other than the fact that he doesn't seem to age?

彼は歳を取らないように見えるんですが、それ以外にキアヌのどこが特別なんでしょう？

Why do people love him so much?

どうしてみんな彼のことがとっても好きなんでしょうか？

Well, there's a couple of reasons, but personally what I like most about him is the fact that there's always some story of him going out of his way to help others out.

まあ、いろいろ理由はありますけど、個人的にはいつでも彼が他の人を助けたというエピソードが耳に入ってくるからだと思うんです。

And what's so special about this is the fact that you never hear these stories from his mouth.

そして、特に彼自身の口からこの事を聞かされることが全く無いんです。

It's always some stranger on the internet who happened to be there, witnessing the good deed, that's telling you this story.

いつもたまたま赤の他人がその場に居合わせて、彼が素晴らしい事をしているのを見てネットでその話をシェアすることで私たちが耳にするんです。

Which means that Keanu Reeves goes around doing good things all of the time without ever bragging about it.

ということは、キアヌ・リーブスは素晴らしい事をしても決して自ら自慢はしないわけです。

He doesn't do it for validation from other people.

他の人からの承認をもらうためにやっているわけではないからですね。

He doesn't do it for points on the internet or for the attention.

ネット上での評判を高めたり注目してもらうためにやるわけでもありません。

He does it because he genuinely likes being a good person.

ただ単に、良い事をする人でありたいと思うからこその行為です。

For example, just a couple of weeks ago, Keanu was on a public plane.

例えば、ほんの数週間前のことですが、キアヌは一般の飛行機に乗り合わせていました。

And for some reason, the plane had to do an emergency landing, which you can only imagine must be pretty scary.

そして何かしらの理由で、その飛行機は緊急着陸を強いられる状況に陥ったのですが、これはかなり怖い出来事だというのは想像に難くありません。

Most of the people on that plane probably thought that they were going to die at one point or another.

機内の人たちのほとんどが、もしかしたらこのまま死んでしまうのでないかとどこかしらの時点で考えた事と思います。

Luckily for everyone, the plane managed to land safely.

幸運にも、飛行機は安全に着陸することができました。

No one was injured, but they landed about 100 miles away from their intended destination.

ケガ人もいませんでしたが、本来の目的地よりも100マイルほど離れた場所に着陸したのです。

So right after they land, instead of just calling a private taxi and going his own way, like most celebrities would, Keanu decides to charter a van.

こんな時、ほとんどのセレブはプライベート・タクシーを呼んで勝手に自分で移動するものですが、着陸直後にキアヌはライトバンをチャーターすることにしました。

He fills it with as many people from the plane as possible.

And he's playing country music on his phone so that people feel more at ease.

携帯からカントリーミュージックを流して、皆を落ち着かせようとしていたんです。

Because again, these people just experienced an emergency landing on a plane.

というのも、そこにいる全員が飛行機の緊急着陸というものを経験したわけで、

So you can only imagine how stressed out and traumatized some of them were.

中には随分とストレスを感じてトラウマに陥っている人も少なからずいたでしょうから。

And this is just one example.

これはほんの1つの例に過ぎません。

There are tons of stories of him.

彼に関する似たような話はごまんとあります。

Picking up hitchhikers, hanging out with homeless people, giving up his seat on the subway, and just being an all around good guy.

ヒッチハイカーを拾ったり、ホームレスの人たちと交わったり、地下鉄で席を譲ったりと、本当に普段から良い人なんです。

But you never hear any of these stories from him, you always hear it from someone else.

Well, if you think about it.

It's certain traits that make people so lovable.

誰かが好かれやすいというのは、その人が持つある種の特性に関係してくるものです。

The reason I like Keanu Reeves is not because hes a celebrity or because I love the Matrix series.

私がキアヌ・リーブスを好きなわけは、彼がセレブだからとか映画マトリックスのファンだからというものではないんです。

I like Keanu because of this specific trait that he has, which again is doing good deeds without bragging about it.

私がキアヌを好きなのは、彼が持つまさにこの特性ゆえのことで、それはつまり「良い行いをしても自慢することが無い」というものです。

And this is where the secret to learning how to love yourself lies.

そしてここに自分を好きになることを学ぶための秘密が隠されているんです。

All I would have to do is take this trait and add it to my character.

私がすべきことは、この特性を自分に取り入れて自分の正確に加える事です。

And just like that, I would start loving myself more.

そうすると、いとも簡単に自分の事を好きになり始めることができるんです。

If I started doing good deeds and never bragged about it, I would start loving myself more.

私の場合は、良い行いをしてもそれをひけらかすようなことをしなければ、自分のことがもっと好きになってきます。

Because if you start incorporating the favorite traits of people that you admire and love...

というのは、尊敬したり好きな人の素晴らしいと思う特性を自分にも取り込んでいったり

If you take the reasons why you love them so much and add them to your self...

自分はなぜそういった人たちが好きなのかというまさにその理由を自分自身の中に加えていくと…

Guess what?

何と！

You'll start loving yourself more.

自分自身を今よりもっと好きになっていくんです。

See, the reason we don't love ourselves is because we have traits that we don't like.

つまり、自分の事を好きになれない理由は自分の中に嫌いな特性があるからです。

Maybe you think that you're lazy.

自分はダラダラしてると思うかもしれませんし、

Maybe you think you're socially awkward.

人との付き合いが上手くないと思っているかも知れません。

Maybe you think you're not someone that others can depend upon.

自分は他人から頼られるような人間ではないという考えを持っていたり。

If you're like me, and you don't like these traits in other people, but you have them in yourself, then of course, you're not going to love yourself.

私もそうなんですけど、こういった特性を他人の中に見出すのが嫌いで、それなのにそれが自分の中にあるのが分かっている時は、間違いなく自分のことが好きにはなれません。

Because you have so many traits about yourself that you dislike.

自分の中に自分でも嫌いな特性がたくさん存在するわけですから。

All you need to do is fix this ratio.

ですからこの割合を変える必要があるんです。

Decrease the amount of traits that you dislike and increase the amount of traits that you like.

嫌いな特性を減らして、好きな特性を増やしていくのです。

If you look up to someone because of their bravery, then all you have to do is start doing what you consider to be brave things like taking risks, speaking up for yourself, or standing up for others.

勇敢な人を尊敬するのであれば、自分で勇敢だと感じる事、例えばリスクを冒すとか自分の意見をはっきり述べるとか、他人のために立ち上がるとかいったことを実践していくわけです。

And you'll start loving yourself more.

そうすれば自分の事がもっと好きになっていきます。

If you look up to someone because of how hardworking they are, then all you have to do is start doing what you consider to be hard work, Like building habits, making progress in your projects, or hitting the gym, and you'll start loving yourself more.

もしくは勤勉な人を見てすごいなと思うならば、自分なりのハードワーク、つまり新しい習慣を身に付けたり今取り組んでいることを前に進めていく、もしくはジム通いを始めるといったことを実行していけば、自分のことがもっと好きになっていきます。

If you look up to someone because they're a social butterfly, then all you have to do is start talking to more people or try to have deeper conversations, and you will start loving yourself more.

人との付き合いが上手な人に憧れるならば、自分ももっとたくさんの人と話をするようにしたり深い会話をするように心掛ければ、自分のことがもっと好きになってきます。

If you start incorporating the traits of people you look up to and like, you will start loving yourself more.

自分が尊敬したり好きな人の特性を取り込むことで、自分のことがもっと好きになってくる。

It's that simple.

いたって簡単な原理です。

So the next time you see a celebrity or a friend that you admire, ask yourself this...
