Collective nouns are often called group nouns.

可算名詞は集合名詞と呼ばれることがよくあります。

That is because they represent a number of things together.

これはあるものの集合を表しています。

政府、家族、チーム

The special thing about these collective nouns

可算名詞の特質は

is that they can be singular or plural.

単数、複数両方になれるということです。

If you consider your family to be a group of individuals,

家族を個人の集合と捉えるとすると

then the pronoun is they and the verb is plural.

代名詞は「they」になり、動詞も複数形になります。

My family are happy.

私の家族は幸せです。（are:複数形）

But your family can also be considered as a single unit,

ですが、家族を１つの塊として捉えることもあります、

a machine that all works together.

一緒に動く機械のようですね

In this case, the pronoun is it and the verb is singular.

その場合、代名詞は「it」になり、動詞は単数を使います。

My family is happy.

私の家族は幸せです。（is:単数）

This does not apply to all collective nouns,

これは全ての可算名詞に当てはまることではありません、

so be careful.
