and the future, mature perspective on the future --

今考えている未来

I'd like to try and bring all those three tenses together

成熟した時に考えるであろう未来

in one identity tonight.

この３つの時制を１つにまとめる試みを

And you could say that the poet, in many ways,

今夜行おうと思います

looks at what I call "the conversational nature of reality."

いろいろな意味で 詩人というのは

And you ask yourself:

「現実の対話的性質」を 見ています

What is the conversational nature of reality?

皆さんは こう思うでしょう

The conversational nature of reality is the fact

「現実の対話的性質」とは何だろう？

that whatever you desire of the world --

それは

whatever you desire of your partner in a marriage or a love relationship,

皆さんが世界に望むもの すなわち

whatever you desire of your children,

結婚あるいは恋愛中の パートナーに望むもの

whatever you desire of the people who work for you or with you,

子供に望むもの

or your world --

部下や同僚に望むもの

will not happen exactly as you would like it to happen.

自分自身に望むもの

But equally,

そういったものは 自分の思いどおりには 起こらないということです

whatever the world desires of us --

しかし同じように

whatever our partner, our child, our colleague,

世界が私たちに望むもの

our industry,

パートナーや子供や同僚

our future demands of us,

社会が望むもの

will also not happen.

将来が私たちに要求することも

And what actually happens

起きるとは限りません

is this frontier between what you think is you

実際に起こることは

and what you think is not you.

あなたが 自分だと考える存在と 自分ではないと考える存在の

And this frontier of actual meeting

境界上にあります

between what we call a self and what we call the world

つまり「自分自身」と呼ぶ存在と

is the only place, actually, where things are real.

「世界」と呼ぶ存在が出会う この境界線こそ

But it's quite astonishing,

事物が現実である 唯一の場所なのです

how little time we spend at this conversational frontier,

しかし驚くべきことに

and not abstracted away from it in one strategy or another.

私たちが どんな手段を使おうと この対話的境界で過ごし

I was coming through immigration,

そこから排除されない時間は 極めて短いのです

which is quite a dramatic border at the moment,

into the US last year,

and, you know, you get off an international flight

across the Atlantic,

and you're not in the best place;

you're not at your most spiritually mature.

You're quite impatient with the rest of humanity, in fact.

So when you get up to immigration with your shirt collar out

and a day's growth of beard,

and you have very little patience,

and the immigration officer looked at my passport

I said, "I work with the conversational nature of reality."

And he leaned forward over his podium

and he said, "I needed you last night."

my powers as a poet and philosopher only go so far.

we were into a conversation about his marriage.

Here he was in his uniform,

But all of us live at this conversational frontier

I'd like to put you in the shoes of my Irish niece,

standing on a cliff edge on the western coast of Spain,

Twenty-three years old, she's just walked 500 miles

And when you get to Santiago, actually,

it can be something of an anticlimax,

because there are 100,000 people living there

who are not necessarily applauding you as you're coming into town.

10万人程が住む街に

(Laughter)

And 10,000 of them are trying to sell you a memento of your journey.

But you do have the possibility of going on for three more days

to this place where Marlene stood, called, in Spanish, Finisterre,

でも そこから更に ３日間歩き続けると

in English, Finisterre,

マーリーンが立った場所に着きます スペイン語でフィニステーレと呼ばれますが

from the Latin, meaning "the ends of the earth,"

英語ではフィニスターと発音します

the place where ground turns to ocean;

「地の果て」という意味の ラテン語に由来します

the place where your present turns into the future.

陸と海の境界であり

And Marlene had walked this way --

現在が未来へと変わる場所です

she just graduated as a 23-year-old from the University of Sligo

マーリーンはこの道を歩きました

with a degree in Irish drama.

スライゴ大学を23才で卒業し

And she said to me, "I don't think the major corporations of the world

専攻はアイルランド演劇でした

will be knocking on my door."

I said, "Listen, I've worked in corporations all over the world

for decades;

So I walked the Camino in order to give myself some courage,

in order to walk into my future."

And I said, "What was the most powerful moment you had on the whole Camino,

the very most powerful moment?"

巡礼中に最も力強く感じた瞬間について

She said, "I had many powerful moments,

but you know, the most powerful moment was post-Camino,

was the three days you go on from Santiago and come to this cliff edge.

And you go through three rituals.

サンティアゴから この岸壁に来る間の３日間でした

The first ritual is to eat a tapas plate of scallops" --

その間に３つの儀式がありました

or if you're vegetarian,

１つ目はホタテ貝のタパスを食べること

to contemplate the scallop shell.

もしベジタリアンなら

(Laughter)

ホタテ貝の貝殻を思い浮かべるだけ

Because the scallop shell has been the icon and badge of your walk,

and every arrow that you have seen along that way

has been pointing underneath a scallop shell.

So really, this first ritual is saying:

How did you get to this place?

How did you follow the path to get here?

How do you hold the conversation of life when you feel unbesieged,

どのような道のりだったか

when you're unbullied,

when you're left to yourself?

How do you hold the conversation of life that brings you to this place?

ふと我に返る時は

And the second ritual is that you burn something that you've brought.

どのようにあなたをこの地に至らせた 人生の対話を続けるのか

I said, "What did you burn, Marlene?"

２つめの儀式は 何か自分が持ってきたものを焼くことです

She said, "I burned a letter and two postcards."

何を焼いたか尋ねると

I said, "Astonishing.

手紙１通とハガキ２枚を焼いたそうです

Twenty-three years old and you have paper.

驚きました

I can't believe it."

23才の若者が 手紙やハガキを持っていたとは

(Laughter)

I'm sure there's a Camino app

where you can just delete a traumatic text, you know?

(Laughter)

It will engage the flashlight,

imbue it with color

and disappear in a firework of flames.

But you either bring a letter or you write one there,

and you burn it.

And of course we know intuitively what is on those letters and postcards.

そこで焼いてしまうのです

It's a form of affection and love that is now no longer extant, yeah?

And then the third ritual:

終わってしまった恋についてなどでしょう

between all these fires are large piles of clothes.

３つ目の儀式です

And you leave an item of clothing

手紙やハガキを燃やしている傍らに たくさんの服が山になっています

that has helped you to get to this place.

道中で着けていた衣服の一つを

And I said to Marlene, "What did you leave at the cliff edge?"

この地に置いて行くのです

She said, "I left my boots --

何を置いたのかという問いに マーリーンはこう答えました

the very things that I walked in, actually.

「私は巡礼中に使用していた

They were beautiful boots, I loved those boots,

ブーツを置いた

but they were finished after seven weeks of walking.

きれいで気に入っていたけど

So I walked away in my trainers,

この７週間の巡礼で役目を終えたので

but I left my boots there."

ブーツをそこに置いて

She said, "It was really incredible.

スポーツ用の靴で立ち去ったの

The most powerful moment was, the sun was going down,

信じられないような体験だった

but the full moon was coming up behind me.

もっとも力強く思った瞬間は 太陽が沈んでいく時に

And the full moon was illuminated by the dying sun in such a powerful way

背後から満月が昇り

that even after the sun had dropped below the horizon,

沈みゆく太陽に 月が煌々と照らされ

the moon could still see that sun.

And I had a moon shadow,

月は太陽に照らされていた

and I was looking at my moon shadow walking across the Atlantic,

その月の光によって 私の影ができて

across this ocean.

その影が大西洋を歩いて渡るの

And I thought,

大西洋をよ

'Oh! That's my new self going into the future.'

そのとき思ったのは

But suddenly I realized the sun was falling further.

これこそ未来に向かう 自分自身だと

The moon was losing its reflection,

でも突然 太陽がさらに沈むのに気付き

and my shadow was disappearing.

太陽の光の 月からの反射もなくなり

The most powerful moment I had on the whole Camino

私の影も消えていった

was when I realized I myself had to walk across that unknown sea

巡礼中でもっとも力強く感じた瞬間は

into my future."

私自身がこの未知の大洋を渡って 未来に向かって歩かなければらないことに

Well, I was so taken by this story,

気づいた時だった」

I wrote this piece for her.

私はこのエピソードに たいへん感化され

We were driving at the time;

姪のために詩を書きました

we got home, I sat on the couch,

I wrote until two in the morning --

everyone had gone to bed --

and I gave it to Marlene at breakfast time.

This is about the supposed arrival at the sum of all of our endeavors.

it could be Mecca,

京都でもよいでしょう

it could be Varanasi,

自分で設定したゴールかもしれません

it could be Kyoto,

とにかく ゴールへの到着を目指して 不安を抱えて近づいていくことについてです

it could be that threshold you've set for yourself,

自分の人生や

the disturbing approach to the consummation of all your goals.

自分の肉体

And one of the difficulties about walking into your life,

そして この世界にすっかりと 歩み入ることの難しさの１つは

about coming into this body,

はじめから すべての他人と共有した

into this world fully,

３つの頭から離れない幻想を 作り上げたと

is you start to realize

気づき始めることです

that you have manufactured three abiding illusions

１つ目の幻想は 弱点を持たずに

that the rest of humanity has shared with you since the beginning of time.

生きていくことができる と考えることです

And the first illusion is that you can somehow construct a life

原初から人が課されてきた 避けられない

in which you are not vulnerable.

困難や病気や喪失に

You can somehow be immune to all of the difficulties

遭わずに済むと 考えることです

and ill health and losses

自然界を見渡すと

that humanity has been subject to since the beginning of time.

循環しないものなど

If we look out at the natural world,

無いことに気づきます

there's no part of that world

まず 姿が現れ初め あるいは隠された時期があり

that doesn't go through cycles of, first, incipience,

やがて成熟します

or hiddenness,

その後 美しく消え始め

but then growth, fullness,

そして 最後には 厳しく完全な消滅です

but then a beautiful, to begin with, disappearance,

and then a very austere, full disappearance.

We look at that, we say, "That's beautiful,
