And I'm also a social justice comedian,

something that I insist is an actual job.

また私は「社会正義コメディアン」

To explain what that is, let me tell you how I got here.

誰が何と言おうと これは本物の仕事です

I've performed all over the country.

内容を説明するため 経緯をお話ししましょう

And let me tell you, America is majestic, right?

私は全国の舞台に立ってきました

It's got breathtaking nature,

確かにアメリカは偉大な国です

waffle houses

息を呑むような自然に

and diabetes as far as the eye can see.

It is really something.

見渡す限りの糖尿病患者

Now, the American population can be broken up

into three main categories:

there's mostly wonderful people,

３種類に分類できます

haters

大部分が「いい人」

and Florida.

「アンチ」

(Laughter)

そして「フロリダ人」

Besides Florida, the most troubling category here are the Haters.

They are a minority,

フロリダ人を除いて 最も困るのが「アンチ」です

but they overcompensate by being extra loud.

少数派ですが

They have the Napoleon complex of demographics,

それを補って余りあるほど 騒々しいんです

and yes, some of the men do wear heels.

As a social justice comedian,

靴が本当に上げ底の人もいます

it's my goal to convert these haters,

社会正義コメディアンとしての 私の目標は

because they hate a lot of things, which leads to negative outcomes,

アンチを改心させることです

like racism, violence and Ted Nugent.

何でも憎んで 悪影響を及ぼすからです

This is not an exhaustive list;

例えば人種差別や暴力 テッド・ニュージェントなどです

I'm probably missing 3-7 items.

これでも全部ではありません

But the point is,

we have to reckon with the haters.

But there's variance within this group

and it's not efficient to go after all of them, right?

So what I've done is created a highly scientific Taxonomy of Haters.

I basically took all of the haters,

I put them in a petri dish, like a scientist,

あらゆるアンチを取り上げて

and this is what I found.

First off, we have the trolls.

These are your garden-variety digital haters.

まずは「荒らし」

They're the people who quit their jobs

これはよくいるデジタル・アンチで

so they can post on YouTube videos all day long.

一日中 YouTubeに投稿するために

There's also the drive-by haters.

仕事を辞めるような人々です

Now, these people will be at a stoplight,

それから「辻斬りアンチ」

they'll wait for the light to turn green

赤信号で停車していて

and when it does, they yell, "Go back to your own country!"

信号が変わるまで待ち

Now back in the day, they would've actually gotten out of their cars

青になった瞬間 「自分の国に帰れ」とか叫ぶ人々です

and hated you to your face.

かつては 実際に車から降り 面と向かって

But they just don't make them like they used to --

憎しみをぶつけてきましたが

which is another sign of the decline in America.

もう その頃の彼らではありません

(Laughter)

The next category

（笑）

is the mission-oriented-bigot- whose-group-affiliation-

次のグループは

gives-them-cover-for-hating hater.

「布教活動しつつ偏見を持ってるけど 団体と繋がってるので

These guys like to hate via a seemingly nice organization,

一見 それっぽくない」アンチ

like a church or a nonprofit,

この人たちは教会やNPOといった 一見善良な組織を通して

and they oftentimes like to speak in an old-timey voice.

憎しみを広めることが得意で

But the group I'm most interested in is the swing hater.

古臭い話し方をしがちです

The swing hater is sister to the swing voter --

ただ一番関心があるのは 「浮動アンチ」です

they just can't decide!

この人たちは 選挙の浮動票と同じで

They're like ideological sluts

自分で決められません

who move from hating to not hating.

思想面でフラフラしていて

And they do it because they don't have enough information.

差別したり しなかったり

This is the group I like to target with social justice comedy.

そうなってしまうのは 情報不足のせいです

Why comedy?

このグループこそ 社会正義コメディのターゲットなんです

Because on a scale of comedy to brochure,

では なぜコメディなのか？

the average American prefers comedy, as you can see from this graph.

コメディからチラシまで 評価してみると

(Laughter)

標準的なアメリカ人は このグラフの通り コメディが好きだからです

Comedy is very popular.

And by the way,

this is a mathematically accurate graph,

Now, the question is:

Why does social justice comedy work?

ここで問題になるのは

Because, first off, it makes you laugh.

なぜ社会正義コメディに 効果があるのでしょう？

And when you're laughing, you enter into a state of openness.

第１に笑いを誘うから そして

And in that moment of openness,

笑っている時には 心が開くからです

a good social justice comedian can stick in a whole bunch of information,

心が開けば

and if they're really skilled,

優れた社会正義コメディアンなら そこに大量の情報を突っ込めるし

a rectal exam.

(Laughter)

Here are some ground rules for social justice comedy:

first off, it's not partisan.

This isn't political comedy, this is about justice,

and no one is against justice.

Two, it's inviting and warm,

it makes you feel like you're sitting inside of a burrito.

Three, it's funny but sneaky,

like you could be hearing an interesting treatise

on income inequality,

that's encased in a really sophisticated poop joke.

Here's how I see social justice comedy working.

（笑）

A few years ago, I rounded up a bunch of Muslim-American comedians --

in a non-violent way --

数年前 私はイスラム系アメリカ人 コメディアンを大勢 集めました

(Laughter)

暴力は使ってません

And we went around the country

（笑）

to places like Alabama, Arizona, Tennessee, Georgia --

places where they love the Muzzies --

and we did stand-up shows.

「ムスリム大好き人間」が集まる場所で

We called the tour "The Muslims Are Coming!"

ツアーのタイトルは 『ムスリムがやって来る！』

We turned this into a movie,

and then after the movie came out,

その様子を映画にして

a known hate group spent 300,000 dollars

公開されるやいなや

on an anti-Muslim poster campaign

ある有名なヘイトグループが 30万ドルを投じて

with the MTA -- that's the New York City subway system.

MTA ニューヨーク市都市交通局と共に

Now, the posters were truly offensive,

反イスラム ポスター・キャンペーンを始めました

not to mentioned poorly designed --

本当に不愉快なポスターで

I mean, if you're going to be bigoted,

当然デザインも最低

you might as well use a better font.

だって そんなにこだわりたいなら

(Laughter)

マシなフォントを使えばいいでしょう

But we decided, why not launch our own poster campaign

（笑）

that says nice things about Muslims,

私たちもポスター・キャンペーンを 始めたらどうかと考えました

while promoting the movie.

映画の宣伝をしつつ ムスリムの良さを

So myself and fellow comedian Dean Obeidallah

広めるんです

decided to launch the fighting-bigotry- with-delightful-posters campaign.

私とコメディアン仲間のD・オビダラーは

We raised the money, worked with the MTA for over 5 months,

「偏見と戦う 愉快なポスター キャンペーン」をすることにしました

got the posters approved,

お金を集めて５か月以上に渡って MTAと交渉を続け

and two days after they were supposed to go up,

ポスターの承認を受けましたが

the MTA decided to ban the posters,

掲示予定日を２日過ぎた時

citing political content.

MTAは中止の決定を下しました

Let's take a look at a couple of those posters.

内容が「政治的」だというんです

Here's one.

Facts about Muslims:

これです

Muslims invented the concept of a hospital.

「ムスリムに関する事実：

OK.

ムスリムは『病院』の概念を発明」

Fact: Grown-up Muslims can do more push-ups than baby Muslims.

(Laughter)

「事実： ムスリムは赤ちゃんより大人の方が たくさん腕立て伏せができる」

Fact: Muslims invented Justin Timberlake.

（笑）

(Laughter)

「事実： ムスリムは ジャスティン・ティンバーレイクを発明」

Let's take a look at another one.

（笑）

The ugly truth about Muslims:

もう一つご覧ください

they have great frittata recipes.

「ムスリムの恐ろしい真実：

Now clearly, frittatas are considered political by the MTA.

彼らはおいしいオムレツの レシピを持っている」

Either that, or the mere mention of Muslims in a positive light

MTAはオムレツを 政治的だと捉えたようです

was considered political -- but it isn't.

ムスリムを肯定的に表しただけで

It's about justice.

「政治的」とされましたが それは違います

So we decided to change

これは「正義」の問題なんです

our fighting-bigortry- with-delightful-posters campaign

and turn it into the fighting-bigotry- with-a-delightful-lawsuit campaign.

(Laughter)

「偏見と戦う 愉快な裁判キャンペーン」に 変えることにしました

So basically, what I'm saying is a couple of dirt-bag comedians

（笑）

took on a major New York City agency

そして 簡単に言うと 最凶のコメディアン数人が

and the comedians won.

NYの大きな機関を相手取って

コメディアンが勝ったんです

Victory was a very weird feeling.

I was like, "Is this what blonde girls feel like all the time?

勝ってみて とても変な気分になりました

'Cause this is amazing!"

Here's another example.

I'm asked everywhere I go: "Why don't Muslims denounce terrorism?"

もう一つ紹介しましょう

We do. But OK, I'll take the bait.

どこへ行っても こう聞かれます 「なぜムスリムはテロを非難しないのか？」

So I decided to launch thedailydenouncer.com.

実際はしてるんですが ここは釣られましょう

It's a website that denounces terrorism every day of the week,

私は thedailydenouncer.com を 立ち上げることにしました

while taking the weekends off.

これは毎日テロを非難する ウェブサイトです

Let's take a look at an example.

ただ土日は休みです

They generally appear as single-panel cartoons,

内容を見てください

"I denounce terrorism! I also denounce people who never fill the paper tray!"

普段は１コマまんがを掲載しています

The point of the website is that it denounces terrorism

「テロを非難する！ プリンタ用紙を補充しない奴らも！」

while recognizing that it's ridiculous

that we have to constantly denounce terrorism.

実際問題 毎日延々と非難し続けるなんて

But if bigotry isn't your thing,

バカげているという点です

social justice comedy is useful for all sorts of issues.

ところで 偏見には関心がなくても

For example, myself and fellow comedian Lee Camp

あらゆる問題に役立つのが 社会正義コメディです

went to the Cayman Islands to investigate offshore banking.

私とコメディアン仲間の リー・キャンプは

Now, the United States loses something like 300 billion dollars a year

ケイマン諸島に行って オフショア金融を調査しました

in these offshore tax havens.

アメリカは タックスヘイブンのせいで 年間およそ３兆ドルを

Not to brag,

失っています

but at the end of every month,

自慢じゃないですが

I have something like 5-15 dollars in disposable income.

私は毎月 月末には

So we walked into these banks in the Cayman Islands

5～15ドルの可処分所得があります

and asked if we could open up a bank account

with eight dollars and 27 cents.

The bank managers would indulge us for 30-45 seconds before calling security.

Security would come out, brandish their weapons,

Most of my work is meant to be fun.

It's meant to generate a connection and laughter.

But yes, sometimes I get run off the grounds by security.

人同士のつながりと笑いを 生み出そうとしているんです

Sometimes I get mean tweets and hate mail.

確かに 警備員に 追い出されることもあります

Sometimes I get voice mails saying that if I continue telling my jokes,

酷いツイートやヘイトメールを 受け取ることもあります

they'll kill me and they'll kill my family.

こんなボイスメールが 来ることもあります

And those death threats are definitely not funny.

「ジョークを言い続けるなら お前も家族も殺す」

But despite the occasional danger,

こんな脅迫は 冗談では済みません

I still think that social justice comedy is one of our best weapons.

ただ 時々危険な目には遭っても

I mean, we've tried a lot of approaches to social justice,

社会主義コメディは 最強の武器の１つだと思います

like war and competitive ice dancing.

だって社会正義の実現を目指して

But still, a lot of things are still kind of awful.

戦争とか フィギュアスケートとか いろいろ試みられていますが

So I think it's time we try and tell a really good poop joke.

それでも まだ不愉快なことが たくさんあるんです
