Usually I like working in my shop,

but when it's raining and the driveway outside turns into a river,

then I just love it.

And I'll cut some wood and drill some holes and watch the water,

木材を切って、ドリルで穴をあけて、外の水を眺め

and maybe I'll have to walk around and look for washers.

ウロウロとワッシャーを探したりするかもしれません

You have no idea how much time I spend.

とてつもなく長い時間が かかるのです

This is the "Double Raindrop."

これは「ふたつの雨滴」です

Of all my sculptures, it's the most talkative.

とても表現力のある作品です

It adds together the interference pattern

近くに落ちた二つの雨の雫の

from two raindrops that land near each other.

波を足した干渉波を表現しています

Instead of expanding circles, they're expanding hexagons.

広がる円のかわりに六角形が広がります

All the sculptures move by mechanical means.

私の作品はどれも機械仕掛けで動きます

Do you see how there's three peaks to the yellow sine wave?

黄色い波に三つのピークがあるのがみえますか？

Right here I'm adding a sine wave with four peaks and turning it on.

ここで四つピークのある波を足して動かしています

Eight hundred two-liter soda bottles --

800本の 2リッターのペットボトル

oh yea.

最高です

Four hundred aluminum cans.

Tule is a reed that's native to California,

トゥーリーはカリフォルニア原生の葦の一種です

and the best thing about working with it is that it smells just delicious.

A single drop of rain

雨の雫、これはひとつだけ

increasing amplitude.

だんだん振幅が大きくなっていきます

The spiral eddy that trails a paddle on a rafting trip.

ラフティングのときにパドルの後ろにできる渦巻き

This adds together four different waves.

これは四つの波を足し合わせています

And here I'm going to pull out the double wavelengths

ここでは 2倍波を取り除き

and increase the single.

基本波を強めています

The mechanism that drives it has nine motors

仕掛けには9つのモーターと

and about 3,000 pulleys.

3000もの滑車が使われています

Four hundred and forty-five strings in a three-dimensional weave.

これは445本の紐が立体的に折り合わさっていています

Transferred to a larger scale --

actually a lot larger, with a lot of help --

14,064 bicycle reflectors --

a 20-day install.

"Connected" is a collaboration

with choreographer Gideon Obarzanek.

Strings attached to dancers.

ダンサーに紐が繋がっています

This is very early rehearsal footage,

これは初期のリハーサルの映像ですが

but the finished work's on tour

完成した作品はツアーで各地を廻っていて

and is actually coming through L.A. in a couple weeks.

2,3週間後にはL.A.でも公演されます

A pair of helices and 40 wooden slats.

一対のらせん状の物と40の木の羽板

Take your finger and draw this line.

指でこの形をなぞってください

Summer, fall, winter, spring,

夏、秋、冬、春、

noon, dusk, dark, dawn.

真昼、夕暮れ、暗闇、夜明け

Have you ever seen those stratus clouds

空に平行に伸びる二本の層雲を

that go in parallel stripes across the sky?

見たことがありますか？

Did you know that's a continuous sheet of cloud

実はつながった一枚の雲が

that's dipping in and out of the condensation layer?

空の結露層に出たり入ったりして そうみえるのです

What if every seemingly isolated object

日常バラバラにみえる物も

was actually just where the continuous wave of that object

実は連続した波が部分的に 私たちの見える世界に

poked through into our world?

顔を出しているだけかもしれません

The Earth is neither flat nor round.

地球は平らでも球でもなく

It's wavy.

波の様な物なのです

It sounds good, but I'll bet you know in your gut that it's not the whole truth,

もっともらしく聞こえますが 皆さん直感で何かが違うと 感じていると思います

and I'll tell you why.

それには理由があります

I have a two-year-old daughter who's the best thing ever.

私には何よりも大切な2歳の娘がいます

And I'm just going to come out and say it:

ここではっきり言ってしまうと

My daughter is not a wave.

私の娘は波ではありません

And you might say, "Surely, Rueben, if you took even just the slightest step back,

しかし「ルーベン、ちょっと離れて見てみれば

the cycles of hunger and eating,

空腹、食事、散歩、睡眠、

waking and sleeping, laughing and crying

笑い、泣きなど周期的なパターンではないか」

would emerge as pattern."

と皆さんに言われるかもしれません

But I would say, "If I did that,

でも、実は「そう考えてしまうと

too much would be lost."

あまりにも沢山のものが失われてしまう」のです

This tension between the need to look deeper

物事をもっと深く見たいという願望と

and the beauty and immediacy of the world,

深く観ようとすれば失われてしまうような

where if you even try to look deeper you've already missed what you're looking for,

この世の直感的な美しさの間のテンションが

this tension is what makes the sculptures move.

私の作品の動きにつながっているのです

And for me, the path between these two extremes

私にとって、この両端を結ぶものが

takes the shape of a wave.

波の形をとるのです

June Cohen: Looking at each of your sculptures,

ジューン･コーエン:作品を見ると

they evoke so many different images.

いろいろなイメージが浮かびます

Some of them are like the wind and some are like waves,

風や波のようなものもあれば

and sometimes they look alive and sometimes they seem like math.

生きているようなものや、数学的なものもあります

Is there an actual inspiration behind each one?

それぞれに発想の基があるのですか？

Are you thinking of something physical or somthing tangible as you design it?

実際見たり触ったりできるものが題材になっているのでしょうか？

RM: Well some of them definitely have a direct observation --

RM:ふたつの雨の雫のように、直接な観察から

like literally two raindrops falling,

生まれたものも 確かにあります

and just watching that pattern is so stunning.

雫のパターンには見とれてしまいます

And then just trying to figure out how to make that using stuff.

そして素材を使ってそれを表すことを考えます

I like working with my hands.

手を使った作業が好きなので

There's nothing better than cutting a piece of wood

木材を切って それを動くように

and trying to make it move.

工夫するのは最高です

JC: And does it ever change?

JC: 途中でかわったりは？ 作ってみたらデザインと違うものになったりすることは？

Do you think you're designing one thing,

and then when it's produced it looks like something else?

RM: The "Double Raindrop" I worked on for nine months,

RM: 実は「ふたつの雨の雫」の製作には9ヶ月かかりました

and when I finally turned it on,

やっと完成し動かしてみたら

I actually hated it.

全くの期待はずれで

The very moment I turned it on, I hated it.

スイッチを入れた瞬間から本当に気に入らなかったのです

It was like a really deep-down gut reaction, and I wanted to throw it out.

腹の底からの強い感情で捨ててしまおうかと思ったくらいです

And I happened to have a friend who was over,

ちょうどその時 友達が来ていて

and he said, "Why don't you just wait."

彼が「待って見たら？」といいました

And I waited, and the next day I liked it a bit better,

それで待つことにしました。次の日には少し良いと思うようになり

the next day I liked it a bit better, and now I really love it.

その翌日には もっと良くなり、今はとても気に入っています

And so I guess, one, the gut reactions a little bit wrong sometimes,

直感的な反応に間違いはあるし

and two, it does not look like as expected.

頭の中で描いていた物と違ったという事もあるわけです

JC: The relationship evolves over time.

JC: 時が経つと新しい関係が生まれますね
