about two years ago.

事の成り行きは 実はここラジャスターン州で

I was in the desert, under the starry skies

約２年前に始まりました

with the Sufi singer Mukhtiar Ali.

私はスーフィーの歌手であるムフタール・アリと

And we were in conversation

星空の下の砂漠で

about how nothing had changed

語り合っていました

since the time of the ancient Indian epic "The Mahabharata."

「古代インドの叙事詩

So back in the day, when us Indians wanted to travel

マハーバーラタの時代から何も変わっていないね」と

we'd jump into a chariot and we'd zoom across the sky.

どこかに行きたいとき 神話の中で私たちインド人は

Now we do the same with airplanes.

二輪馬車に飛び乗って空を駆けて行きました

Back then,

現代でも同じことを飛行機でしています

when Arjuna, the great Indian warrior prince,

神話では

when he was thirsty, he'd take out a bow,

インドの偉大な戦士アルジュナ王子は

he'd shoot it into the ground and water would come out.

喉が渇くと弓を取り出し

Now we do the same

地面を射って水を噴き出させました

with drills and machines.

現代でも同じことを

The conclusion that we came to

ドリルと機械でしています

was that magic had been replaced

私たちの出した結論は

by machinery.

「機械が魔法に取って代わったね」

And this made me really sad.

ということでした

I found myself becoming a little bit of a technophobe.

なんてつまらないんだろうと思いました

I was terrified by this idea

少しハイテク恐怖症になりました

that I would lose the ability

写真を撮ったり

to enjoy and appreciate the sunset

友達にツイートせずに

without having my camera on me, without tweeting it to my friends.

純粋に夕日を眺めて楽しむことが

And it felt like technology

できなくなったらどうしようと怖くなりました

should enable magic, not kill it.

それに技術は魔法を壊すのでなく

When I was a little girl,

実現すべきな気がしました

my grandfather gave me his little silver pocket watch.

子供の頃 祖父に

And this piece of 50-year-old technology

小さな銀の懐中時計をもらったのですが

became the most magical thing to me.

この50年前の技術は 私にとって

It became a gilded gateway

とても不思議な力を持つものになり

into a world full of pirates and shipwrecks

海賊や難破船に満ちた

and images in my imagination.

空想上の世界への

So I felt like our cellphones

輝く扉になりました

and our fancy watches and our cameras

だから私は携帯電話やカメラや

had stopped us from dreaming.

ハイテクな腕時計などせいで 人が

They stopped us from being inspired.

夢を見なくなったように感じました

And so I jumped in, I jumped into this world of technology,

インスピレーションが失われたのだと

to see how I could use it to enable magic

そこで私はこのテクノロジーの世界に飛び込んで

as opposed to kill it.

魔法を壊さず 逆に実現するために

I've been illustrating books since I was 16.

どう使えるか考えました

And so when I saw the iPad,

16歳の頃から挿絵を描いているので

I saw it as a storytelling device

iPadを見たとき

that could connect readers all over the world.

物語を語るツールとして

It can know how we're holding it.

世界中の読者を繋げることができると思いました

It can know where we are.

iPadにはユーザーがどこにいて どんな持ち方を

It brings together image and text

and animation and sound and touch.

Storytelling is becoming

more and more multi-sensorial.

But what are we doing with it?

So I'm actually just going to go in and launch Khoya,

an interactive app for the iPad.

So it says, "Place your fingers

upon each light."

And so --

It says, "This box belongs to ... "

And so I type in my name.

And actually I become a character in the book.

At various points, a little letter drops down to me --

自分が本の登場人物になります

and the iPad knows where you live because of GPS --

いろいろな場面で短い手紙が届きます

which is actually addressed to me.

iPadのGPSで持ち主の場所が分かるので

The child in me is really excited

手紙は実際自分宛てになっています

by these kinds of possibilities.

このような可能性に私は

Now I've been talking a lot about magic.

童心にかえってわくわくします

And I don't mean wizards and dragons,

魔法について沢山話しましたが

I mean the kind of childhood magic,

私が言うのは魔法使いやドラゴンのことではなくて

those ideas that we all harbored as children.

誰もが子供の頃抱いていた

This idea of fireflies in a jar, for some reason,

空想の魔法のことです

was always really exciting to me.

なぜか瓶の中のホタルのイメージには

And so over here you need to tilt your iPad,

いつもわくわくさせられました

take the fireflies out.

ホタルを出してあげるには

And they actually illuminate your way through the rest of the book.

iPadを傾けないと駄目です

Another idea that really fascinated me as a child

こうすると物語の続きをホタルが照らしてくれます

was that an entire galaxy could be contained

もう１つ子供の頃とても夢中になったのは

within a single marble.

１つのビー玉に１つの銀河系が

And so over here,

入っているという空想でした

each book and each world

そこでこちらは

becomes a little marble

それぞれの本と世界が

that I drag in

小さなビー玉になっていて

to this magical device within the device.

これをドラッグして

And it opens up a map.

アプリの中のこの不思議な装置に入れると

All along, all fantasy books have always had maps,

地図が開くようになっています

but these maps have been static.

今までもファンタジーの本には必ず地図がありました

This is a map that grows and glows

でも変化しない地図でした

and becomes your navigation for the rest of the book.

この地図は拡がって光を発し

It reveals itself to you at certain points in the book as well.

その先の道しるべになります

So I'm just going to enter in.

本の中の特定の箇所で現れることもあります

Another thing that's actually really important to me

is creating content that is Indian

私にとってもう１つとても重要だったのは

and yet very contemporary.

インド的でありながらとても近代的な

Over here, these are the Apsaras.

コンテンツを作るということでした

So we've all heard about fairies and we've all heard about nymphs,

これはアプサラスです

but how many people outside of India

誰もが妖精やニンフの話は聞いたことがありますが

know about their Indian counterparts, the Apsaras?

インド国外でインド版の妖精アプサラスのことを

These poor Apsaras have been trapped inside Indra's chambers for thousands of years

知っている人がどれだけいるでしょう？

in an old and musty book.

可哀相にアプサラスは古びたカビ臭い本の中のインドラの宮廷に

And so we're bringing them back

何千年も閉じ込められてきました

in a contemporary story for children.

それを現代的な

And a story that actually deals with new issues

児童向け物語の中に復活させました

like the environmental crisis.

実際に環境問題のような新しい課題に

Speaking of the environmental crisis,

I think a big problem has been in the last 10 years

環境の問題と言えば

is that children have been locked inside their rooms,

過去10年の間で大きな問題になっているのは

glued to their PCs, they haven't been able to get out.

子供たちが自分の部屋に閉じこもり

But now with mobile technology,

PCに釘付けで外に出ないことです

we can actually take our children outside into the natural world

でもモバイル技術がある今

with their technology.

子供たちを実際に技術と一緒に外の自然に

One of the interactions in the book

連れ出すことができます

is that you're sent off on this quest

この本を通して行うことの１つは

where you need to go outside,

探検に出かけることです

take out your camera on the iPad

外に出てiPadのカメラを使って

and collect pictures of different natural objects.

様々な自然の物の写真を

When I was a child, I had multiple collections

集めなくてはなりません

of sticks and stones and pebbles and shells.

子供の頃 私は棒や石や

And somehow kids don't do that anymore.

小石や貝殻などを沢山集めていたものですが

So in bringing back this childhood ritual,

なぜか今の子はそういうことをしません

you need to go out

だからこの子供の遊びを復活させ

and, in one chapter, take a picture of a flower

外に出させて

and then tag it.

ある章では花の写真を撮って

In another chapter, you need to take a picture of a piece of bark

タイトルをつけ

and then tag that.

別の章では樹皮の写真を撮って

And what happens

それにタイトルを付けさせます

is that you actually create a digital collection of photographs

どうなるかと言うと

that you can then put up online.

自分のデジタル写真集を作って

A child in London puts up a picture of a fox

ネットで公開できるわけです

and says, "Oh, I saw a fox today."

ロンドンの子供がキツネの写真を見せて

A child in India says, "I saw a monkey today."

「今日キツネを見たよ」と言うと

And it creates this kind of social network

インドの子供が「僕は猿を見たよ」と言い

around a collection of digital photographs

自分が実際に撮った

that you've actually taken.

In the possibilities of linking together

ソーシャルネットワークができます

magic, the earth and technology,

魔法と地球と技術を

there are multiple possibilities.

１つにつなげることで

In the next book, we plan on having an interaction

たくさんの可能性が生まれます

where you take your iPad out with the video on

次の本ではiPadのビデオを使った

and through augmented reality,

対話操作を用意しています

you see this layer of animated pixies

拡張現実を使って

appear on a houseplant that's outside your house.

自分の家の外にある観葉植物の上に

At one point, your screen is filled up with leaves.

And so you need to make the sound of wind and blow them away

and read the rest of the book.

We're moving, we're all moving here,

to a world where the forces of nature

come closer together to technology,

and magic and technology can come closer together.

We're harnessing energy from the sun.

世界に向かって進んでいて

We're bringing our children and ourselves

太陽からエネルギーを得たりしています

closer to the natural world

私たちは子供たちと自分たちが

and that magic and joy

物語というシンプルな媒体を通じて

and childhood love that we had

自然の世界や魔法や喜びや

through the simple medium of a story.

以前持っていた子供の頃の夢中な気持ちに
