I was raised by native Hawaiian elders --

three old women

who took care of me while my parents worked.

The year is 1963.

We're at the ocean.

It's twilight.

私達は浜辺にいて

We're watching the rising of the stars

たそがれ時でした

and the shifting of the tides.

星がのぼり 潮が寄せては返すのを

It's a stretch of beach we know so well.

眺めていました

The smooth stones on the sand

とてもよく知っている浜辺です

are familiar to us.

砂浜の丸石にすら

If you saw these women on the street

絆を感じるほどです

in their faded clothes,

おばあさんたちの服は

you might dismiss them

色あせていたので

as poor and simple.

街中で見たら 地味で―

That would be a mistake.

質素な人たちに思われがちですが

These women are descendants

これは間違っています

of Polynesian navigators,

おばあさんたちは

trained in the old ways

先祖古来の訓練を受けた

by their elders,

ポリネシア航海士の

and now they're passing it on to me.

末裔なのです

They teach me the names of the winds and the rains,

今 私に受け継がれようとしています

of astronomy according to a genealogy of stars.

星の系譜に基づいて 風や雨の

There's a new moon on the horizon.

名前を教わります

Hawaiians say it's a good night for fishing.

水平線に新月が沈むと

They begin to chant.

ハワイでは 釣りに適した夜と言われます

聖歌が始まります

When they finish,

they sit in a circle

歌い終えると

and ask me to come to join them.

車座に座り

They want to teach me about my destiny.

私も加わるようにと言います

I thought every seven-year-old went through this.

"Baby girl,

someday the world will be in trouble.

People will forget their wisdom.

It will take elders' voices

from the far corners of the world

to call the world into balance.

先人たちの声を求めて

You will go far away.

世界の果てまで赴かねばならない

It will sometimes be a lonely road.

お前は遠くへ行くことになる

We will not be there.

寂しい旅路になることもあるだろう

But you will look into the eyes

私たちは一緒に行けない

of seeming strangers,

でも見知らぬ人でも

and you will recognize your ohana,

目を見ればオハナ

your family.

つまり 家族であると

And it will take all of you.

わかるだろう

It will take all of you."

誰も避けられないことだ

These words, I hold onto

誰ひとりとして」

all my life.

この言葉は私が生涯

Because the idea of doing it alone

大切にしているものです

terrifies me.

1人で行く旅路は考えるだけで

The year is 2007.

ぞっとするからです

I'm on a remote island in Micronesia.

2007年

Satawal is one half-mile long

私はミクロネシアの離島にいました

by one mile wide.

サタワル島は縦約800m

It's the home of my mentor.

横約1.6kmの島です

His name is Pius Mau Piailug.

Mau is a palu,

a navigator priest.

He's also considered

Mau was, in fact,

He saw that first glint of light --

We cannot afford to lose it.

The year is 2010.

Just as the women in Hawaii

that raised me predicted,

the world is in trouble.

We live in a society

bloated with data,

yet starved for wisdom.

We're connected 24/7,

yet anxiety,

fear, depression and loneliness

is at an all-time high.

We must course-correct.

An African shaman said,

道筋を正さなくてはいけません

"Your society worships the jester

あるアフリカのシャーマンは言いました

while the king stands

「お前たちの社会では

in plain clothes."

道化師を崇拝し

The link between the past and the future

王は平服で現れるのか」

is fragile.

過去と未来のつながりは

This I know intimately,

もろいものです

because even as I travel

このことはよくわかっていました

throughout the world

私は世界中を旅して

to listen to these stories and record them,

このような物語を聞いて

I struggle.

記録していたからです

I am haunted

私は苦闘しました

by the fact that I no longer remember

風や雨の名前をもう

the names of the winds and the rains.

覚えてはいないという事実に

Mau passed away

苦い想いを抱きました

five months ago,

but his legacy and lessons live on.

And I am reminded

彼の残したものや教えは生き続けます

that throughout the world

there are cultures

with vast sums of knowledge in them,

as potent as the Micronesian navigators,

that this is a testament

to brilliant, brilliant

technology and science and wisdom

素晴らしい先代の英知が

that is vanishing rapidly.

Because when an elder dies a library is burned,

証しなのです

and throughout the world, libraries are ablaze.

老人が死ぬと図書館が消えるようなもの

I am grateful for the fact

世界中で図書館が燃え盛っています

that I had a mentor like Mau

私はマウのように航海の方法を

who taught me how to navigate.

教えてくれる師に恵まれて

And I realize

とても幸運であると感じています

through a lesson that he shared

彼の教えを通じて

that we continue to find our way.

私達は正しい道を探し続けるのだと

And this is what he said:

気付きました

"The island is the canoe;

彼はこう言っていました

the canoe, the island."

「この島はカヌーなんだ

And what he meant was,

カヌーは島だ」

if you are voyaging

彼の言いたかったこととは

and far from home,

旅に出て

your very survival depends

故郷から遠く離れれば

on everyone aboard.

乗船している全員が

You cannot make the voyage alone,

命を託し合っています

you were never meant to.

一人で旅をすることはできないし

This whole notion of every man for himself

そんなことはするものではない

is completely unsustainable.

自分の身は自分で守れという

It always was.

考え方では先が思いやられます

So in closing I would offer you this:

今までもそうだったのです

The planet is our canoe,

最後にこの言葉をおくります

and we are the voyagers.

この地球は我々のカヌーであり

True navigation

我々は皆旅人です

begins in the human heart.

真に進むべき進路は

It's the most important map of all.

人の心から生じるもので

Together, may we journey well.

これこそ最も価値ある地図です
