That's me with the funny gloves.

1974年に始まりました

I was 17 and going on a peace walk.

奇妙な手袋をしているのが私です

What I didn't know though, was most of those people, standing there

当時17歳で平和運動に参加していました

with me, were Moonies.

周囲の人がほとんど統一教会信者ということは

(Laughter)

気づいていませんでしたが

And within a week

(笑)

I had come to believe

that the second coming of Christ had occurred,

that it was Sun Myung Moon,

and that I had been specially chosen and prepared by God

to be his disciple.

Now as cool as that sounds,

my family was not that thrilled with this.

And they tried everything they could to get me out of there.

There was an underground railroad of sorts

that was going on during those years. Maybe some of you remember it.

They were called deprogrammers.

And after about five long years

my family had me deprogrammed.

And I then became a deprogrammer.

I started going out on cases.

And after about five years of doing this,

I was arrested for kidnapping.

Most of the cases I went out on

were called involuntary.

What happened was that the family

had to get their loved ones some safe place somehow.

And so they took them to some safe place.

And we would come in and talk to them, usually for about a week.

And so after this happened,

I decided it was a good time to turn my back on this work.

And about 20 years went by.

There was a burning question though that would not leave me.

And that was, "How did this happen to me?"

And in fact, what did happen to my brain?

Because something did.

And so I decided to write a book, a memoir,

about this decade of my life.

And toward the end of writing that book

there was a documentary that came out.

It was on Jonestown.

And it had a chilling effect on me.

These are the dead in Jonestown.

About 900 people died that day,

most of them taking their own lives.

Women gave poison to their babies,

and watched foam come from their mouths as they died.

The thing I had to admit to myself,

with great repulsion,

was that I get it.

I understand how this could happen.

I understand how someone's brain,

なぜこんなことが起こるのか分かっていました

how someone's mind can come to the place

人の脳や心がこの様なことを

where it makes sense --

是正すると 大量虐殺をせずに

in fact it would be wrong, when your brain is working like that --

世界を放置しておくことが

not to try to save the world through genocide.

間違っているのだ、という思想を

And so what is this? How does this work?

生み出すことは認識していました

And how I've come to view what happened to me

これは一体どのように作用するのでしょう？

is a viral, memetic infection.

私に起こったことをどうして

For those of you who aren't familiar with memetics,

ウィルス性メーム伝達と思ったのでしょう？

a meme has been defined as

メーム学に馴染みのない方は

an idea that replicates in the human brain

その定義は人間の脳内に

and moves from brain to brain like a virus,

複製を作りウィルスの様に

much like a virus. The way a virus works is --

脳から脳へと移る思想だと思ってください

it can infect and do the most damage to someone

まさにウィルスのように感染します

who has a compromised immune system.

つまり脆弱な免疫系をお持ちの方に

In 1974, I was young, I was naive,

感染しては大きな被害を出すのです

and I was pretty lost in my world.

1974年当時私は若く無垢で

I was really idealistic.

自分の世界におぼれた

These easy ideas to complex questions are very appealing

真の理想主義者でした

when you are emotionally vulnerable.

感情的に弱ってる時は、難問に対する

What happens is that

取っつきやすい解決策は魅力的なものです

circular logic takes over.

すると循環論法が

"Moon is one with God.

台頭してきます

God is going to fix all the problems in the world.

「文は神の使いだ」

All I have to do is humbly follow.

「神が世界の問題を全て解決してくれる」

Because God is going to stop war and hunger --

「私はただ従えばいいのだ」

all these things I wanted to do --

「神は私の望んだとおり

all I have to do is humbly follow.

戦争や飢餓を全て正してくれる」

Because after all, God is [working through] the messiah. He's going to fix all this."

「私は謙虚に従うだけ」

It becomes impenetrable.

「最終的には使いを通じて神が世界を正してくれる」

And the most dangerous part of this

この思想が絶対のものとなります

is that is creates "us" and "them,"

この思想の最も危険なところは

"right" and "wrong,"

"私たち" と "他人"　'"正" と "誤"

"good" and "evil."

"善" と "悪" の様な二極化を

And it makes anything possible,

生み出してしまうことです

makes anything rationalizable.

何もかもを可能にするのです

And the thing is, though,

全てが合理化されてしまいます

if you looked at my brain

私が統一教会に

during those years in the Moonies --

参加していた頃の脳を

neuroscience is expanding exponentially,

見てみたらどうなっているでしょう？

as Ray Kurzweil said yesterday. Science is expanding.

昨日レイ・カーツワイルが「科学は拡大する」と

We're beginning to look inside the brain.

言った様に神経科学は拡大をしています

And so if you looked at my brain, or any brain that's infected with

その研究範囲は脳内部に到達しました

a viral memetic infection like this,

私の脳やこの様にメームに感染した

and compared it to anyone in this room,

脳を観察して 会場の誰か もしくは

or anyone who uses critical thinking on a regular basis,

日常的に批判的思考をする

I am convinced it would look very, very different.

And that, strange as it may sound,

全く異なる様相をしているはずです

gives me hope.

奇妙に聞こえるかもしれませんが

And the reason that gives me hope

is that the first thing is to admit

希望を見いだす理由は

that we have a problem.

問題の認識こそが

But it's a human problem. It's a scientific problem, if you will.

初めの一歩だからです

It happens in the human brain. There is no evil force out there to get us.

これは人的問題ですが 科学的問題にもなりえます

And so this is something that, through research and education,

脳内の問題であり 外部から悪が働きかけることはありません

I believe that we can solve.

つまりこれは研究や教育を通じて解決が

And so the first step is to realize

可能な問題だと信じています

that we can do this together,

そこで最初のステップは"私たち"と”他人”といった二極化など

and that there is no "us" and "them."

存在せずに皆共に取り組んでいく
