And these are made of this kind of tube --

electricity tube, we call it in Holland.

プロジェクトについてお話します

And we can start a film about that,

その生き物たちはこの様なチューブでできています

and we can see a little bit backwards in time.

オランダで絶縁チューブと呼ばれているものです

(Video) Narrator: Eventually, these beasts are going to live in herds on the beaches.

ここでそれに関する少し前の映像を

Theo Jansen is working hard on this evolution.

見てみましょう

Theo Jansen: I want to put these forms of life on the beaches.

語り手：そのうちこの動物たちは浜辺に群れで暮らすことになるでしょう

And they should survive over there,

テオ ヤンセンがこの動物たちの進化のため日々研究を続けています

on their own, in the future.

テオ ヤンセン：このような生命体を浜辺に送り出したいのです

Learning to live on their own --

そして彼らは将来そこで自分たちだけで

and it'll take couple of more years

生きることができるはずです

to let them walk on their own.

彼らだけで生きる術を学び

Narrator: The mechanical beasts will not get their energy from food,

自分で歩くようになるには、まだ数年かかるでしょうね

but from the wind.

語り手：この機械仕掛けの生命体は食物からエネルギーを供給しているのではなく風の力で動いています

The wind will move feathers on their back, which will drive their feet.

風が背中にある羽を動かすことで彼らの脚は動くのです

The beast walks sideways on the wet sand of the beach,

濡れた浜辺を鼻を風の吹く方に向けながら

with its nose pointed into the wind.

横向きに歩きます

As soon as it walks into either the rolling surf or the dry sand,

波打ち際、もしくは乾いた砂を踏むとすぐに立ち止まり

it stops, and walks in the opposite direction.

反対側に歩いていきます

Evolution has generated many species.

進化の過程を経て多くの種族が誕生しました

This is the Animaris Currens Ventosa.

ヤンセン：この群れは遺伝子コードに基づいて組み立てられています

(Laughter)

これは一種の競争みたいなもので全て別々の種なのですが

勝者が進化を続けていくことになります

TJ: This is a herd, and it is built according to genetic codes.

これは波です、左から右にかけて流れているのが見えますね

And it is a sort of race, and each and every animal is different,

このように左から右へと流れていきます

and the winning codes will multiply.

こちらは新たな世代の種族で

This is the wave, going from left to right.

風の力を蓄積することが可能です

You can see this one.

つまり羽が先端部分についているレモネードのボトルに

Yes, and now it goes from left to right.

空気を押し入れ

This is a new generation, a new family,

万一風がやんだ場合や潮が満ちた場合に蓄積してある

which is able to store the wind.

わずかなエネルギーを利用して砂の積もっている所までたどり着き

So, the wings pump up air in lemonade bottles,

生き延びることができます　実は彼らは溺れやすいんです

which are on top of that.

And they can use that energy in case the wind falls away,

and the tide is coming up,

and there is still a little bit of energy to reach the dunes and save their lives,

because they are drowned very easily.

So, the proportion of the tubes in this animal is very important for the walking.

実際これは普通の車輪よりも優れているのです

There are 11 numbers, which I call The 11 Holy Numbers.

なぜなら浜辺で自転車を試しにこいでみると

These are the distances of the tubes which make it walk that way.

とても大変だと気づくからです

In fact, it's a new invention of the wheel.

脚はただ砂の上に点として触れるだけなのに対して

It works the same as a wheel.

車輪は地面との間を全ての面が触れなくてはなりません

The axis of a wheel stays on the same level,

そこで車輪の開発から5000年後

and this hip is staying on the same level as well.

In fact, this is better than a wheel,

because when you try to drive your bicycle on the beach,

とてつもなく重たいものでも動かせるということです

you will notice it's very hard to do.

後ろから押している人が一人いるんですが

And the feet just step over the sand,

向かい風に対しても十分に歩行可能です

and the wheel has to touch every piece of the ground in-between.

ちなみに3.2トンあります

So 5,000 years after the invention of the wheel,

これはボトルに溜めた風の力で動いています

we have a new wheel.

触覚で障害物の位置を察知し、迂回できます

ご覧の通り、向きを変えてるでしょ

that very heavy loads can be moved.

There's a guy pushing there, behind,

つまり彼らが浜辺で生存するためには、あらゆる危険因子を回避しなければなりません

but it can also walk on the wind very well.

とても危険なものの一つが海水です　ここに海水があります

It's 3.2 tons.

なので彼らは水を感知出来なければなりません

This is working on the stored wind in the bottles.

ここが水を感知する触覚部です

It has a feeler, where it can feel obstacles and turn around.

そしてとても重要なのがこのチューブです　通常では空気を取り込んでいますが

You see, it's going the other way.

水を吸い込むと拒絶反応を示します

Can I have the feeler here?

この動物が海に向かって歩いている所を想像してください

OK. Good.

水に触れた途端、空気が漏れているような音が聞こえるはずです

So, they have to survive all the dangers of the beach,

そうです！感知できなければそのまま溺れてしまうでしょ？

and one of the big dangers is the sea.

ここに、この動物の脳があります

This is the sea.

実を言うと、これは万歩計で歩数を数えています

And it must feel the water of the sea.

これは二進法に基づく万歩計で

And this is the water feeler,

海に触れるとすぐに

and what's very important is this tube.

1と0の順列を入れ替え

It sucks in air normally,

いつも浜辺のどこにいるのかわかるのです　要はとても単純な脳なんです

but when it swallows water, it feels the resistance of it.

つまり「向こうに海があり、あそこに砂山があるから、自分は今ここだ」という具合です

So, imagine that the animal is walking towards the sea.

浜辺で暮らす動物の簡単な日常を対象にした、一種の空想のようなものです

As soon as it touches the water --

you should hear a sound of running air.

最大の敵の一つは嵐です

(Sound of running air)

これはアニマレス ペシピエールの鼻の一部です

Yes!

この鼻が固定されると、体全体が固定されることになります

So if it doesn't feel, it will be drowned, OK?

嵐が近づくと

Here we have the brain of the animal.

地面に杭を打ち込みます（笑）

In fact, it is a step counter, and it counts the steps.

鼻が固定され、体全体も固定されます

It's a binary step counter.

風向きは変わるでしょうが、彼らは常に風の方に鼻を向けます

So as soon it has been to the sea,

数年後には、自力で生きていけるようになるでしょう

it changes the pattern of zeroes and ones here.

まだ色々と助けは必要なんですけどね

And it always knows where it is on the beach.

So it's very simple brain.

It says, well, there's the sea, there are dunes, and I'm here.

So it's a sort of imagination of the simple world of the beach animal.

One of the biggest enemies are the storms.

This is a part of the nose of the Animaris Percipiere.

When the nose of the animal is fixed, the whole animal is fixed.

So when the storm is coming up,

it drives a pin into the ground.

(Laughter)

The nose is fixed, the whole animal is fixed.

The wind may turn, but the animal will always turn its nose into the wind.

Now, another couple of years, and these animals will survive on their own.

I still have to help them a lot.
