So I thought I'd bring her with me today on stage,

It's a very important period --

we abandon our hunting and gathering patterns.

We go from a couple of million people

to the seven billion people we are today.

The Mesopotamian culture: we invent agriculture,

we domesticate animals and plants.

You have the Roman, the Greek and the story as you know it.

The only phase, as we know it

that can support humanity.

The trouble is we're putting a quadruple sqeeze

ここで問題は 地球に対して

on this poor planet,

４つの重圧がかかっているということです

a quadruple sqeeze, which, as its first squeeze,

has population growth of course.

Now, this is not only about numbers;

this is not only about the fact that we're seven billion people

70億人から確実に90億人に増加する―

committed to nine billion people, it's an equity issue as well.

The majority of the environmental impacts on the planet

have been caused by the rich minority,

the 20 percent that jumped onto the industrial bandwagon

in the mid-18th century.

The majority of the planet,

aspiring for development, having the right for development,

are in large aspiring for an unsustainable lifestyle,

a momentous pressure.

The second pressure on the planet is, of course the climate agenda --

地球への第２の重圧は ご存じ 気候変動です

the big issue -- where the policy interpretation of science

大きな論点は

is that it would be enough

to stabilize greenhouse gases at 450 ppm

温室効果ガスを 450 ppm で安定させれば

to avoid average temperatures

exceeding two degrees,

to avoid the risk that we may be destabilizing

the West Antarctic Ice Sheet,

Now, you would have wished the climate pressure

to hit a strong planet, a resilient planet,

but unfortunately, the third pressure

is the ecosystem decline.

Never have we seen, in the past 50 years,

of ecosystem functions and services on the planet,

one of them being the ability to regulate climate on the long term,

in our forests, land and biodiversity.

The forth pressure is surprise,

４つ目の重圧は突然の変化です

the notion and the evidence

これまでの方法論では エコシステムは

that we need to abandon our old paradigm,

線形で 予測可能で 制御できるものでした

that ecosystems behave linearly, predictably,

しかしその方法論を捨てる必要があるという

controllably in our -- so to say -- linear systems,

and that in fact, surprise is universal,

as systems tip over very rapidly, abruptly

and often irreversibly.

This, dear friends, poses a human pressure on the planet

of momentous scale.

We may, in fact, have entered a new geological era --

the Anthropocene,

where humans are the predominant driver of change

at a planetary level.

Now, as a scientist,

what's the evidence for this?

Well, the evidence is,

unfortunately, ample.

残念ながら十分にあります

It's not only carbon dioxide

that has this hockey stick pattern of accelerated change.

You can take virtually any parameter

基本的に 人類の生存に関する

that matters for human well-being --

nitrous oxide, methane,

deforestation, overfishing

森林伐採、乱獲

land degredation, loss of species --

土壌劣化、生物種減少など

they all show the same pattern

これらは全て過去200年にわたって

over the past 200 years.

Simultaneously, they branch off in the mid-50s,

10 years after the Second World War,

showing very clearly that the great acceleration of the human enterprise

starts in the mid-50s.

You see, for the first time, an imprint on the global level.

And I can tell you,

you enter the disciplinary research in each of these,

you find something remarkably important,

the conclusion that we may have come to the point

where we have to bend the curves,

that we may have entered the most challenging and exciting decade

in the history humanity on the planet,

the decade when we have to bend the curves.

Now, as if this was not enough --

to just bend the curves and understanding the accelerated pressure on the planet --

we also have to recognize the fact

that systems do have multiple stable states,

複数の安定状態があることを 認識しなければなりません

separated by thresholds -- illustrated here by this ball and cup diagram,

where the depth of the cup is the resilience of the system.

Now, the system may gradually --

さて システムは

under pressure of climate change,

気候変動、浸食

erosion, biodiversity loss --

多様性喪失などの圧迫を受けると

lose the depth of the cup, the resilience,

くぼみの深さ つまり回復力を失います

but appear to be healthy

でも見かけは 平気に見えます

and appear to suddenly, under a threshold,

すると突然 限界値を超えて

be tipping over. Upff.

落ちるのです おっと

Sorry. Changing state

失礼 状態が変化して

and literally ending up

このように 望まないような状況に

in an undesired situation,

至ることになるのです

where new biophysical logic takes over,

生物物理学の新しいルールや新しい種が取って代わり

new species take over, and the system gets locked.

システムはそこで捕らえられます

Do we have evidence of this? Yes, coral reef systems.

この証拠としてサンゴ礁システムを見てみます

Biodiverse, low-nutrient, hard coral systems

多様な生物が暮らし 低栄養の造礁サンゴは

under multiple pressures of overfishing,

乱獲や持続可能でない観光や気候変動から

unsustainable tourism, climate change.

圧力を受けています

A trigger and the system tips over,

ちょっとしたきっかけでシステムは崩れ

loses its resilience,

回復力を失って

soft corals take over,

軟質サンゴが取って代わると

and we get undesired systems

経済と社会発展を支えられない

that cannot support economic and social development.

望ましくないシステムが残ります

The Arctic -- a beautiful system --

北極圏の美しい生態系は

a regulating biome at the planetary level,

地球レベルの生物群系であり

taking the knock after knock on climate change,

気候変動の影響をずっと受けながらも

appearing to be in a good state.

良い状態を維持していると思われてきました

No scientist could predict that in 2007,

2007年の限界点を越えたかのような

suddenly, what could be crossing a threshold.

突然の変化を予測できた科学者はいませんでした

The system suddenly, very surprisingly, loses 30 to 40 percent

驚いたことに 夏期の北極圏で表層の氷が

of its summer ice cover.

30-40パーセントも減少しました

And the drama is, of course, that

システムにこのような激変が生じれば

when the system does this, the logic may change.

ルールも変わったかもしれません

It may get locked in an undesired state,

望ましくない状態に陥ったかもしれません

because it changes color, absorbs more energy,

and the system may get stuck.

そこでシステムは立ち往生かもしれません

In my mind, the largest red flag warning for humanity

これは人類が危険な状況にあるという

that we are in a precarious situation.

最大の警告 レッドフラッグです

As a sideline, you know that the only red flag that popped up here

ちなみにこの地に立ったレッドフラッグといえば

was a submarine from an unnamed country

某国が派遣した潜水艦が

that planted a red flag at the bottom of the Arctic

石油資源を支配するために北極海の海底に

to be able to control the oil resources.

レッドフラッグを立てたものだけです

Now, if we have evidence, which we now have,

さて 手元に集まった証拠によれば

that wetlands, forests,

[unclear] monsoon system, the rainforests,

behave in this nonlinear way.

30 or so scientists around the world

gathered and asked a question for the first time,

"Do we have to put the planet into the the pot?"

So we have to ask ourselves:

are we threatening this extraordinarily stable Holocene state?

我々はこの極めて安定した 完新世の状態を危うくしていないだろうか？

Are we in fact putting ourselves in a situation

実際 人類が自ら招いた状況は

where we're coming too close

限界点にあまりにも

to thresholds that could lead

近付きすぎていないでしょうか

to deleterious and very undesired,

それは我々が全く望まない

if now catastrophic, change

人類発展における破滅的な変化を

for human development?

もたらすかもしれないのです

You know, you don't want to stand there.

誰もあんなとこに立ちたくないはずです

In fact, you're not even allowed to stand

実際 彼が立っているところに

where this gentleman is standing,

行くことすら許されていません

at the foaming, slippery waters at the threshold.

水が泡立ち滑りやすい場所です

In fact, there's a fence

この断崖の少し上流には

quite upstream of this threshold,

フェンスがあって

beyond which you are in a danger zone.

そこから先は危険地帯となっています

And this is the new paradigm,

我々は過去２、３年で

which we gathered two, three years back,

新しい方法論を獲得しました

recognizing that our old paradigm

of just analyzing and pushing and predicting

parameters into the future,

最小限にしようとする方法論は

aiming at minimalizing environmental impacts, is of the past.

過去のものになったのです

Now we to ask ourselves:

which are the large environmental processes

今 完新世の我々の安全のために

that we have to be stewards of

維持しなければならない

to keep ourselves safe in the Holocene?

最重要の環境プロセスとは何でしょうか？

And could we even,

地球システム科学の発展により

thanks to major advancements in Earth systems science,

非線形の変化が始まる限界点を

identify the thresholds,

見出だすことは

the points where we may expect nonlinear change?

可能になったのでしょうか？

And could we even define

また 人類が安全に暮らせる

a planetary boundary, a fence,

許容範囲 ―フェンスを

within which we then have a safe operating space for humanity?

設定することができるのでしょうか？

This work, which was published in "Nature,"

2009年末に『ネイチャー』に発表された

late 2009,

長年の分析に基づく

after a number of years of analysis,

研究では次のような

led to the final proposition

結論を導いています

that we can only find

わずか９種類の許容範囲について

nine planetary boundaries

積極的に監督していくことで

with which, under active stewardship,

我々が安心して活動していける

would allow ourselves to have a safe operating space.

These include, of course, climate.

この中の一つはもちろん気候です

It may surprise you that it's not only climate.

気候だけでないことに驚いたかもしれません

But it shows that we are interconnected, among many systems on the planet,

地球上の多くのシステムの中でも 特に重要なものが３つあります

with the three big systems, climate change,

３つの主要なシステムとは 気候変動

stratospheric ozone depletion and ocean acidification

成層圏オゾンの減少、海洋の酸性化です

being the three big systems,

この3つの大きなシステムは

where the scientific evidence of large-scale thresholds

地球の地質学史上の大きな変動の

in the paleo-record of the history of the planet.

But we also include, what we call, the slow variables,

the systems that, under the hood,

regulate and buffer the capacity of the resilience of the planet --

the interference of the big nitrogen and phosphorus cycles on the planet,

land use change, rate of biodiversity loss,

freshwater use,

淡水使用など

functions which regulate

biomass on the planet, carbon sequestration, diversity.

And then we have two parameters which we were not able to quantify --

air pollution,

including warming gases and air-polluting sulfates and nitrates,

In fact, most evidence indicates

that these nine may behave as three Musketeers,

"One for all. All for one."

結び付いていることの証拠は多数あります
