It can also be used for something that's a little bit scary though.

でも、ちょっと怖いことにも使える。

As a parent, if the phone rings in the middle of the night, my heart skips a beat.

親として、夜中に電話が鳴ると心臓がバクバクする。

Because it makes me think that maybe one of my children, maybe something bad has happened to them.

私の子どもたちの誰かが、もしかしたら何か悪いことが起きてしまったのかもしれない、と考えてしまうからだ。

If you are my age and if you have teenage children, and if they are supposed to come home at midnight, and it's 1:00 in the morning and the phone rings, usually my heart skips a beat.

もしあなたが私と同年代で、10代の子供がいて、夜中に帰ってくることになっていて、夜中の1時に電話が鳴ったら、普通は心臓がバクバクする。

So when you say my heart skipped a beat, that's the past tense, uh it means that something exciting happened or something a little bit scary happened.

心臓がドキドキした、というのは過去形で、何かエキサイティングなことが起こったとか、ちょっと怖いことが起こったという意味なんだ。

The other phrase I wanted to teach you today is a hop, skip and a jump.

今日、もうひとつ教えたいフレーズは、ホップ、スキップ、ジャンプだ。

Uh, I think this comes from triple jump in the uh the Olympic sport where you hop, skip and jump.

これはオリンピックのホップ、スキップ、ジャンプの三段跳びから来ていると思う。

But we use this to refer to something being not far away.

しかし、私たちはこの言葉を "遠くないところにあるもの "という意味で使っている。

I could say my brother just lives a hop, skip and a jump from here.

私の弟はここから目と鼻の先に住んでいる。

That would that's not true actually.

そんなことはない。

My sister lives a hop, skip and a jump from here, my brother lives a little bit further away.

妹はここから目と鼻の先に、弟は少し離れたところに住んでいる。

So it's used to talk about distance and it means not very far.

つまり、距離について話すときに使われ、それほど遠くないことを意味する。

So to review, if you say my heart skipped a beat.

つまり、私の心臓がドキドキしたということだ。

It could mean that something exciting happened.

何かエキサイティングなことが起こったということかもしれない。

Or it could mean that something.

あるいは、何かを意味しているのかもしれない。

Scary happened.

怖いことが起きた。

And if you say something is a hop, skip and a jump from here or a hop, skip and a jump away, it means it's really, really close.

もし、ここからホップ、スキップ、ジャンプで行けるとか、ホップ、スキップ、ジャンプで行けるとか言うなら、それは本当に、本当に近いということだ。

If you hopped and then did a little skip and a jump, you would be there.

ホップして、ちょっとスキップしてジャンプすれば、そこに着くだろう。

I have switched from a winter coat to a spring jacket.

I might have referred to this as my fall jacket last year.

It's kind of funny how the same jacket when worn in a different season gets a different name.

同じジャケットを違う季節に着ると、違う名前になるのはちょっと面白い。

Put my fall jacket away, wore my winter coat for the entire winter season and now I have my spring jacket on, which looks exactly like my fall jacket.

It's beautiful out here, Jen and I are really excited to get started on doing little things on the farm.
