It's really cold here right now.

今ここはとても寒いです。

In fact, here's the first two things I wanted to teach you.

実は、最初に教えたい2つのことがあります。

The river is frozen over, but it's not frozen solid.

川は凍結していますが、完全には凍っていません。

I'm actually standing on the river right now.

実は今、私は川の上に立っています。

The ice is probably about four or five inches thick.

氷の厚さは約4〜5インチほどです。

It's been minus 15, minus 20 for a while.

しばらくマイナス15度、マイナス20度が続いていました。

Right now it's minus 12.

今はマイナス12度です。

It's quite cold.

かなり寒いです。

So the river is frozen over.

川は凍結しています。

When we say a body of water is frozen over, it means there's no water visible.

水面が凍結するというのは、水が見えなくなることを意味します。

It's ice everywhere.

どこも氷で覆われています。

In fact, if I turn a little bit, you'll see that there's just, I mean, it looks like water, but it's not.

実際、少し向きを変えると、水のように見えますが、違います。

This is all ice, but it's not frozen solid.

これは全て氷ですが、完全には凍っていません。

When we say something is frozen solid, it means that there's no water underneath.

完全に凍るというのは、下に水がないことを意味します。

Here if I was to chip through the ice, eventually I would find water and there would be fish and everything down there.

ここで氷を砕くと、最終的に水があり、その下には魚などもいます。

If the river was frozen solid, it would mean that it's ice all the way down to the bottom of the river.

川が完全に凍結するということは、川底まで全て氷になることを意味します。

So there's your first two terms.

これが最初の2つの用語です。

The river is frozen over, but it's not frozen solid.

川は凍結していますが、完全には凍っていません。

So an interesting thing about really cold extreme weather is that you can see your breath.

極寒の天候について面白いことは、息が見えることです。

I'm not sure if you can see it on camera, but when I breathe out, I can see my breath in the air.

カメラには映っているかわかりませんが、息を吐くと空気中に見えます。

This happens because there's moisture, there's water in your breath, and when it comes out of your mouth, it turns into small drops that you can see.

これは息に含まれる水分が、口から出たときに小さな水滴となって見えるからです。

I wish it was a little more visible.

もう少し見えるといいのですが。

I could just see little wisps of it right now.

今は小さな白い霧のようなものが見えます。

But another thing that happens when it's this cold, you can see your breath.

このように寒いときには、息が見えます。

So there's something important that you have to do when it's this cold, and that's that you have to bundle up.

この寒さで重要なことは、防寒をしっかりすることです。

I am bundled up right now.

私は今、しっかり防寒しています。

When you're bundled up, it means you're wearing a lot of clothing.

防寒というのは、たくさんの衣服を着ることを意味します。

I'm wearing my winter hat.

冬用の帽子をかぶっています。

I'm wearing my winter gloves.

冬用の手袋をしています。

I'm wearing my winter boots.

冬用のブーツを履いています。

I'm wearing actually several layers of clothing, but I'll talk about that in a little while.

実は何層も重ね着をしていますが、それについては後で話します。

So when it's this cold outside, it's important to bundle up.

このように寒い外では、防寒が重要です。

I really like this sweatshirt.

このスウェットシャツが気に入っています。

This is an athletic sweatshirt because it zips up all the way and it keeps my neck warm.

これはアスレチック用のスウェットシャツで、首まで全部ジッパーで閉められて首を温かく保てます。

So I have my winter hat, my toque, my gloves, my boots, and this nice thing to keep my neck warm.

冬用の帽子、トゥーク、手袋、ブーツ、そして首を温かくするこの良いものがあります。

I am bundled up.

しっかり防寒しています。

And I'm happy that I wore lots of layers.

たくさん重ね着をして良かったです。

I'm happy that I'm bundled up because when it's this cold, you have to be careful that you don't get frostbite.

この寒さでは凍傷にならないように気をつける必要があるので、防寒できて良かったです。

Frostbite is when the skin freezes.

凍傷は皮膚が凍ることです。

It happens sometimes on your nose.

時々鼻に起こります。

If you don't have good gloves, it can happen on your fingers.

良い手袋をしていないと、指にも起こることがあります。

It can happen on your extremities that are exposed to the cold air.

寒気にさらされた末端部分に起こることがあります。

Thankfully, it's not windy out right now, and thankfully, I'm not going to be outside for a very long time.

幸い今は風がなく、また長時間外にいる予定もありません。

But one thing you have to be careful of, if it's minus 10 or minus 20 or even colder, you have to make sure you don't get frostbite.

しかし、マイナス10度やマイナス20度、それ以下の場合は、凍傷にならないように気をつける必要があります。

When I was out walking the other day, I was often walking like this to stop the wind from hitting my nose because I certainly don't want the tip of my nose to freeze.

先日散歩をしているとき、鼻先が凍るのを防ぐために、このように歩いていました。

I certainly don't want to get frostbite.

凍傷は絶対に避けたいですからね。

So we're actually experiencing what I would call a cold snap.

実は今、寒波と呼べる状況です。

A cold snap is when it's suddenly colder than normal for a day or two.

寒波とは、1〜2日だけ普段より急に寒くなることです。

Usually around this time of year, it's about minus 3 or minus 4, maybe minus 6.

この時期は通常マイナス3度かマイナス4度、たまにマイナス6度くらいです。

But a couple of days ago, it was 2 degrees, and then they said it was going to go down to minus 15, and then it came up to minus 11 yesterday, down again to minus 14 last night, up to about minus 3 today.

しかし数日前は2度でしたが、マイナス15度まで下がり、昨日はマイナス11度まで上がり、昨夜また14度まで下がり、今日はマイナス3度まで上がる予定です。

So I would describe the last couple of days as a cold snap.

この数日間を寒波と表現できます。

The weather quickly got a lot colder, stayed really cold, and then it's planning to come back up again.

天気が急に寒くなり、しばらく寒い状態が続き、その後また上がる予定です。

So right now, we're in a cold snap.

今はこの寒波の最中です。

So you might be surprised to know that I'm actually quite warm right now.

驚くかもしれませんが、実は今私は結構温かいです。

Even though it's extremely cold, I'm warm because I'm wearing lots of layers.

極寒ですが、たくさん重ね着をしているので温かいです。

Let me describe them to you.

説明させてください。

I'm obviously wearing socks and my winter boots, but I'm also wearing underwear, long underwear, sometimes called long johns, and my jeans.

もちろん靴下と冬用ブーツを履いていますが、下着、ロングアンダーウェア（ロングジョンとも呼ばれます）、そしてジーンズも履いています。

I'm not going to show you, but underneath these pants, I'm wearing what's called long underwear or long johns.

お見せはしませんが、このズボンの下にロングアンダーウェアかロングジョンと呼ばれるものを履いています。

Up here, I'm actually wearing four layers.

上は実は4層着ています。

I'm wearing a t-shirt, a long-sleeve t-shirt.

Tシャツ、長袖Tシャツを着ています。

I'm wearing this athletic sweatshirt, and I'm wearing my winter coat, and then of course up here, my winter hat and my gloves.

このアスレチックスウェットシャツを着て、冬用コートを着て、もちろん上には冬用の帽子と手袋をしています。

Layers are very important when you go out in extremely cold weather.

極寒の天候に出かけるときは、重ね着がとても重要です。

When you dress in layers, it's just a lot easier to stay warm.

重ね着をすると、温かさを保つのがずっと簡単です。

Layers trap air, I think, and it all acts as insulation.

重ね着は空気を閉じ込め、全体が断熱材として機能します。

Insulation is something that stops cold temperatures from getting through and keeps warm temperatures inside.

断熱材は寒気が通り抜けるのを防ぎ、温かい空気を内側に保つものです。

So if you want to stay warm in extremely cold weather, it's important to dress in layers.

極寒の天候で温かく過ごしたい場合は、重ね着が重要です。

So how would I describe today?

では今日をどう表現しましょうか？

I would probably say, it's bitterly cold today, or it's freezing cold today, or just it's freezing.

おそらく、「身を切るように寒い」「凍えるように寒い」あるいは単に「凍るような寒さ」と言うでしょう。

Those are probably the three most common phrases that we would use to describe extreme cold.

これらが極寒を表現する最も一般的な3つのフレーズでしょう。

When it's minus two, it's not that cold.

マイナス2度のときはそれほど寒くありません。

It's a little bit cold, but when it's this temperature, when it's below minus ten, we would say it's bitterly cold, it's freezing cold, or it's freezing.

少し寒い程度ですが、この気温、マイナス10度以下になると、「身を切るように寒い」「凍えるように寒い」「凍るような寒さ」と言います。

By the way, do you like this tree?

ところで、この木は気に入りましたか？

Did you, have you hugged a tree today?

今日、木に抱きついたことはありますか？

Aren't you supposed to hug a tree every day?

毎日木に抱きつくべきだとは言いませんでしたか？

These are my three favorite trees, by the way.

これらは私のお気に入りの3本の木です。

I'm not sure if you can see the two in the background as well.

背景にある2本も見えているかわかりませんが。

They're at the far end of my farm, and I often walk here to come and visit them.

これらは私の農場の一番端にあり、よく歩いてきて会いに来ます。

Sounds kind of funny, maybe, to visit a tree.

木に会いに来るなんて変に聞こえるかもしれませんね。

By the way, the farm is way back over there.

ちなみに、農場はずっとあっちの方です。

And yeah, these three trees have been here my whole life.

そう、これらの3本の木は私の人生の中ずっとここにありました。

When I was a kid, it was often fun to come and play down here.

子供の頃、ここで遊ぶのがよく楽しみでした。

It's actually also right by the river.

実は川のすぐそばでもあります。

So just a little tidbit about Bob's life, and go hug a tree today.

ボブの人生についての小話でした。今日は木に抱きついてみてください。

So luckily, this cold spell did not come with lots of snow.

幸い、この寒波は大雪を伴いませんでした。

Sometimes when you have a cold spell, it can also be very windy and very snowy.

寒波のときは、強風と大雪を伴うことがあります。

There's just lots of snow coming down, and it can cause what's called whiteouts, or whiteout conditions.

大量の雪が降り続き、ホワイトアウトやホワイトアウト状態を引き起こすことがあります。

Right now, I can see the barn, and I can see the house from here, but if we were having whiteout conditions, if there were whiteouts, there would be so much snow blowing, I wouldn't be able to see them.

今は納屋や家がここから見えますが、ホワイトアウト状態だと、雪が激しく吹きすぎて見えなくなります。

This is especially dangerous when you're driving.

これは特に運転時に危険です。

When you drive on the road in the winter, and if there are whiteouts, you can't see very far in front of you.

冬に道路を運転していて、ホワイトアウトになると、前方がほとんど見えなくなります。

Extremely dangerous, and not fun at all.

非常に危険で、全く楽しくありません。

Very, very stressful.

とてもとてもストレスがたまります。

So thankfully, this little cold spell we're having is just cold.

ですから幸い、今回の寒波は単に寒いだけです。

Not a lot of snow, not a lot of whiteouts.

大雪もホワイトアウトもあまりありません。

Everything has been fairly safe when we're driving on the road, so that's good.

道路の運転もかなり安全な状態が続いていて、それは良いことです。

Another thing that can be extremely dangerous when you have extremely cold weather is something called black ice.

極寒の天候で非常に危険なもうひとつは、ブラックアイスと呼ばれるものです。

Black ice is when there's a thin layer of ice on black pavement, and what makes it dangerous is that you can't see it.

ブラックアイスは黒い舗装道路の上に薄い氷の層ができることで、見えないことが危険な理由です。

Black ice sometimes forms at the beginning of a cold snap.

ブラックアイスは寒波の始まりによく形成されます。

When the weather's warm, and there's a bit of water on the road, and maybe it's raining, as soon as the temperature drops, a very, very thin layer of ice forms on the pavement.

天気が暖かく、道路に少し水があり、雨が降っているときに、気温が急に下がると、舗装道路の上に非常に薄い氷の層ができます。

And ice is like glass.

そして氷はガラスのようです。

You can see through it.

透けて見えます。

So sometimes you're driving, and there's black ice, and you don't realize that it's extremely slippery.

そのため運転中にブラックアイスがあっても、非常に滑りやすいことに気付かないことがあります。

Thankfully, right now, there's no black ice on the road.

幸い、今は道路にブラックアイスはありません。

It's safe to drive.

運転は安全です。

It looks like the road crews have kept the road safe by putting down lots of salt to melt any black ice that would form.

道路管理者が大量の塩をまいてブラックアイスの形成を防いで、道路を安全に保っているようです。

But yes, another dangerous thing when you're driving in extremely cold weather, watch out for black ice.

はい、極寒の天候で運転する際のもうひとつの危険は、ブラックアイスに注意することです。

So thankfully, there wasn't a lot of snow during this extremely cold weather, and we're not snowed in.

幸いなことに、この極寒の間、大雪は降らず、雪に閉じ込められることもありませんでした。

You can see the snow is only about two, three centimeters deep, an inch to an inch and a half, and so we are not snowed in.

見てわかるように、雪は2、3センチ、1インチから1.5インチほどの深さしかないので、雪に閉じ込められてはいません。

When you are snowed in, it means there's so much snow that you can't drive out of your driveway.

雪に閉じ込められるというのは、雪が多すぎて車で車道に出られない状態を意味します。

You can't go anywhere until you remove the snow, and sometimes the snow gets so deep during extreme cold weather that you're snowed in.

雪を除かないとどこにも行けず、極寒の天候では時々雪が深くなりすぎて閉じ込められることがあります。

You could also say that you're snowed under, but this also has another meaning.

「雪に埋もれている」とも言えますが、これには別の意味もあります。

If you're ever really busy at work or at school, you can say that you're snowed under.

仕事や学校で非常に忙しいときも、「雪に埋もれている」と言えます。

So thankfully, we're not snowed in.

ですから幸い、私たちは雪に閉じ込められていません。

The snow is not very deep at all, and thankfully, we're not snowed under, and hopefully, you're not snowed under in the sense that you're so busy, you can't get all your work done.

雪はそれほど深くなく、雪に埋もれてもいません。そして皆さんも、忙しすぎて仕事が全部できないという意味で雪に埋もれていないことを願います。
