Today we're looking at different ways to use the word actually.

We use it to talk about what is true, like the word really.

Are bats actually blind?

We use it to correct or contradict.

私たちはそれを訂正したり、反論したりするために使う。

Are you from London, Sam?

Actually, no.

実は違うんだ。

I'm from Oxford.

オックスフォード出身なんだ。

We use it to emphasise that something is different or surprising.

私たちは、何かが違っていたり、意外であったりすることを強調するために使う。

I love fish, but I actually don't like prawns.

魚は大好きだけど、実は海老は苦手なんだ。

We use it to admit or confess to something.

何かを認めたり、告白したりするときに使う。

Did you eat the last chocolate, Sam?

Actually, yes.

実はそうなんだ。

I did.

そうだ。

And we use it to add information.

そして、情報を追加するために使う。

I'm a teacher and so are both my parents, actually.

実は私も両親も教師なんだ。

So it's actually quite a useful word.
