In this lesson, I am going to teach you  if the letter 'y' is a consonant or vowel.

I know many of you already  know the five main vowels: 

5大母音はすでにご存知の方も多いと思います。

So how can 'y' be a vowel?

First, let's just do a review of what  a consonant is, and what a vowel is. 

まず、子音とは何か、母音とは何かということをおさらいしておきましょう。

The English alphabet has 26 letters. 21 are consonants and 5 are vowels. 

英語のアルファベットは26文字です。21が子音で、5が母音である。

The letter 'y' is definitely  considered a consonant. 

y'は間違いなく子音とみなされます。

Let's look at these words: 

この言葉を見てみましょう。

year

年

Yes, it has that clear 'y' /y/ consonant sound.

そう、あのはっきりとした「y」/y/の子音があるのです。

yellow

イエロー

yesterday

昨日

you

おのれ

young

うら若い

your

尊

It has that unique /y/ consonant sound.

あの独特の/y/の子音があるのです。

But it doesn't always have that consonant sound.

でも、いつもその子音があるわけではありません。

Let's move on.

前に進みましょう。

'y' can make many vowel sounds.

'y'は多くの母音を作ることができる。

Let's look at the board.

盤面を見てみよう。

'y' can make the long e sound.

'y'は長いeの音を出すことができる。

Like 'candy' or 'monkey'.

キャンディ」とか「モンキー」とか。

'y' can make the short i sound.

'y'は短いiの音を作ることができる。

Like 'gym' or 'bicycle' or 'system'.

ジム』とか『自転車』とか『システム』とか。

'y' can make the long i sound. Like 'my' or 'sky'.

'y'は長いiの音を作ることができます。my'や'sky'のように。

'y' is considered to be a vowel if:

'y'は、以下の場合、母音とみなされる。

Number one.

1番です。

The word has no other vowel like 'gym'.

この単語には、「ジム」のような他の母音がない。

All English words need at least one vowel.

すべての英単語には、少なくとも1つの母音が必要です。

So 'gym' has 'y' as the vowel.

つまり、「ジム」は「y」が母音になるわけです。

Or 'my' or 'sky'.

あるいは「my」「sky」。

Number two.

その2

The letter is at the end of a  word or syllable like 'candy'. 

candy "のように単語や音節の末尾にある文字。

It's at the end. Or 'bicycle'. 

最後にあるんです。あるいは「自転車」。

'bicycle' has three syllables 'bi-cy-cle'.

bicycle」は3音節の「bi-cy-cle」です。

The 'y' is at the end of the second syllable.

y」は第2音節の末尾にある。

'bicycle'

'自転車'

Or three, the letter is in the middle of a syllable like 'system'.

あるいは3、その文字が「system」のように音節の真ん中にある。

'system' has two syllables.

'system'は2音節。

'sys-tem'

'sys-tem'

It needs a vowel.

母音が必要です。

So 'system' The 'y' is the vowel.

だから「システム」 「y」は母音です。

All right. Let's move on.

Is 'y' a vowel?

y'は母音なのか？

Well 'y' is more commonly pronounced as a  vowel, but officially, it is a consonant. 

y'は母音として発音されることが多いのですが、正式には子音なんです。

But it is very common for English  teachers, when teaching the vowels,  

しかし、英語の先生が母音を教えるときには、とてもよくあることなのです。

to teach 'a e i o u and sometimes y'.

を教え、「a e i o u and sometimes y」を教えています。
