In this video, we're going to talk about the articles; 'a', 'an' and 'the'.

Now this can be very confusing, so please make sure you pay careful attention.

これは非常に分かりづらいので、よく注意してください。

We use articles in front of nouns.

名詞の前に冠詞を使います。

Okay, so remember that and let's look at the board.

さて、それでは覚えておいて、ボードを見てみましょう。

First, we use 'a' or 'an' when we're talking about any one thing.

まず、「a」や「an」を使うのは、何か一つのものについて話すときです。

For example, let's say I say, “A banana is delicious.”

例えば、私が "バナナはおいしい "と言ったとしましょう。

Okay, that means all bananas.

そうか、つまりすべてのバナナだ。

Any banana is delicious.

どんなバナナでも美味しいです。

“A banana is delicious.”

"バナナがおいしい"

Okay, let's jump over here.

If I'm talking about a specific banana…

特定のバナナのことなら...。

maybe I have a banana in my hand.

手にバナナを持っているかもしれません。

It's specific, not any banana, this one.

具体的には、どのバナナでもなく、このバナナです。

I have to use 'the',

私は「the」を使わなければなりません。

“The banana is old.”

"バナナは古い"

Okay. This one.

なるほど。これですね。

I can't say, “A banana is old.”

"バナナは古い "とは言えません。

Then that means all bananas are old.

そうすると、すべてのバナナは古いということになる。

And that's not true. Just this one.

そして、それは真実ではありません。ただ、これだけは。

So, I say, “The banana is old.”

だから、"バナナは古い "と言う。

We also use 'a' or 'an' when we're talking about something for the first time.

また、初めてのことを話すときには「a」や「an」を使います。

So, I have another example here.

“I watched a movie.”

"I watched a movie"

I'm talking about this movie for the first time, so I have to use “…a movie”.

この映画のことを初めて話すので、「...a movie」を使わなければなりません。

But, if I want to talk about this movie again,

でも、またこの映画のことを話したいと思ったら

for the second time, or the third time or fourth, fifth…

2回目、3回目、4回目、5回目...。

it doesn't matter.

は関係ありません。

I have to use 'the'.

私は「the」を使わなければなりません。

“The movie was fun.”

"映画は楽しかった"

I'm talking about this one. The specific.

これのことだよ。具体的には

“The movie was fun.”

"映画は楽しかった"

I can't say, “A movie was fun.”

"映画が面白かった "とは言えない。

That means all movies are fun.

つまり、すべての映画が面白いということです。

That's not true.

そんなことはありません。

“The movie was fun.”

"映画は楽しかった"

Okay, and I also use 'the'

なるほど、「the」も使っています。

when I'm talking about a noun where there's only one and only.

唯一無二の存在である名詞の話をしているときは

Okay.

なるほど。

For example, there's only one sun.

例えば、太陽は一つしかありません。

Okay, when I look at the sky, there's only one sun.

そうか、空を見ると太陽はひとつしかないんだ。

So, I say, “The sun.”

だから、"太陽 "と言うんです。

“The sun is hot.”

"太陽は熱い"

I cannot say, “A sun.”

"A sun "とは言えない。

That's wrong.

それは間違いです。

When there's one and only, we say, “The sun.”

唯一無二の存在であるとき、私たちは「太陽」と言います。

Let's look at some more examples.

The first example says, “A lion is dangerous.”

最初の例では、"A lion is dangerous" と言っています。

I have to use 'a' because I'm talking about any one lion.

Any lion is dangerous.

All lions are dangerous.

So, I use 'a'.

The next sentence says, “It's a dog.”

I'm talking about this dog for the first time, so I use 'a'.

私はこの犬のことを初めて話すので、「a」を使います。

Now, I'm talking about this dog for the second time.

さて、2回目のこの犬の話です。

So, I say, “The dog is cute.”

だから、"犬がかわいい "と言う。

Okay.

Here's a similar example.

“It's an ant.”

"It's an ant"

Well, I used 'an' because we have 'ant', which start with a vowel.

私が「an」を使ったのは、母音で始まる「ant」があるからです。

And I'm talking about this ant for the first time.

そして、初めてこのアリのことを話します。

“It's an ant.”

"It's an ant"

Now, I'm talking about this ant again.

さて、今回もこのアリの話です。

“The ant is small.”

"アリは小さい"

“The ant…”, this one, “…is small.”

"アリが..."、これは「...小さい」ですね。

Okay, and the last one.

さて、最後の1枚。

“It's the moon.”

"月だから"

I have to say, “the moon” because there's only one moon.

月は一つしかないので、「月」と言わなければなりません。

I cannot say, “a moon”.

私は「月」とは言えません。

“It's the moon.

"月 "だよ。

The moon…”, only one, “…is round.”

月は...」、1つだけ、「...丸い」。

Okay.

So, do I put 'a' or 'an'?

では、「a」をつけるか「an」をつけるか。

Well here we have the vowel 'o'.

So we have to put “'an' octopus”.

だから、「"an" octopus」を入れなければならない。

“I see an octopus.”

"I see an octopus"

Okay, the next one.

It's the first time, so I say, “a pen”.

And the last example.

Now, we only have one sky.

今、私たちには1つの空しかありません。

Right…

So, if there's only one and only, we have to put the article 'the'.

つまり、唯一のものがある場合は、冠詞の「the」をつけなければならないのです。

“I can see the sky.”

"空が見える"
