Virgil Tibbs is from the large northern city, Philadelphia in Pennsylvania and a top crime investigator.

He helps Police Chief Bill Gillespie investigate a murder in his small southern town Sparta in Mississippi.

After the crime is solved, Gillespie walks with Tibbs as he boards a train home.
