and Joy said,

"Dang, I wish he'd get off my back.

ジョイという子がこう言いました

My daddy, he calls me all the time."

｢もう ほっといてくれればいいのに

"Lucky for you he calls at all," said Jasmine.

私のお父さん いつも電話かけてくるのよ｣

"I haven't heard from my dad in years."

｢電話をもらえるなんていいわね｣ ジャスミンが言いました

At this moment, I knew the girls needed a way

｢私なんてお父さんから何年も連絡がないのよ｣

to connect with their fathers.

これを聞いてこの子達には 父親との繋がりを築く手段が

At Camp Diva, my non-profit organization,

必要だと気づきました

we have these types of conversations all the time

私の運営する非営利団体 キャンプ・ディバでは

as a way to help girls of African descent

始終このような会話が繰り広げられます

prepare for their passage into womanhood.

目的は このアフリカ系の少女達が

These girls just needed

大人の女性になる準備の手助けです

a way to invite their fathers into their lives

この子達は

on their own terms.

自分なりのやり方で 父親を受け入れる

So I asked the girls,

きっかけが必要だと思ったので

"How can we help other girls

こう尋ねました

develop healthy relationships with their fathers?"

「他の女の子のためにも 父親と良い関係を築くのに

"Let's have a dance," one girl shouted,

なにかできる事はないかな？」

and all the girls quickly backed her up.

「ダンスパーティーをしよう」 一人の子が提案しました

They started dreaming about the decorations,

子どもたちは皆 すぐに賛同し

invitations, the dresses they were going to wear,

いろいろと想像を膨らませ始めました

and what their fathers could and could not wear. (Laughter)

飾り付け 招待状 彼女達のドレス

It was off and running before I could even blink my eyes,

そして父親の服装のルールまで （笑）

but even if I could have slowed down those girls,

あっという間に話はどんどん進みました

I wouldn't have,

じっくり考えさせる事が できたとしても

because one thing that I have learned

そんなことはしなかったでしょう

from over a decade of working with girls

ここ十年来 少女達と関わってきて

is that they already know what they need.

学んだのですが

The wisdom lives inside of them.

彼女達は何が必要が きちんとわかっているからです

As long as they have infrastructure,

とても聡明で

mentorship and resources,

活動の基盤や助言する人

they can build what they need,

目的達成に必要なものさえ整っていたら

not only to survive, but to thrive.

何でも自分達で作り上げられるのです

So we had a dance,

生きながらえるためだけでなく 成功するためにです

and girls and their fathers came in multitudes.

そうしてダンスパーティが行われ

They were dressed to the nines.

たくさんの少女達と父親達が参加しました

They acted sweet.

皆華やかに着飾っていました

(Laughter)

仲良く幸せそうに踊り

They acted silly.

（笑）

They really enjoyed each other's company.

ふざけ合ったり

It was a huge success.

お互いと過ごす時間を楽しみ

And the girls decided to make it an annual event.

大成功でした

So as the seasons changed,

少女達はこれを 毎年恒例の行事にしようと決めました

and it was time to plan the dance again,

季節が移り変わり

one girl named Brianna spoke up,

再びダンスパーティの時期になった時

and she said,

ブリアナという子が声を上げ

"My dad can't come to the dance,

こう言いました

and this whole thing is making me sad."

｢私のお父さんは来れないから

"Why not?" the girls asked.

こんなパーティー 考えただけでも悲しくなるわ」

"Because he's in jail," she bravely admitted.

｢どうして来られないの？｣ と他の子達が訊きました

"Well, can he just get out for a day?" one of the girls asked. (Laughter)

｢だってお父さんは刑務所にいるから｣ 彼女は思い切って言いました

"And come in shackles?

｢その日だけ出てこれない?｣ 一人の子が訊きました　（笑）

That's worse than not having him here at all."

｢手錠を付けて？

At this moment, I saw an opportunity

それなら来ない方がましだわ」

for the girls to rise to the occasion

こんなやりとりを聞いて ひらめいたんです

and to become their own heroes.

この子達が仲間を救う ヒーローになれる

So I asked, "What do you think we should do about this?

チャンスがここにあると

We want every girl to experience the dance, right?"

そこで訊きました ｢どうすればいいと思う？

So the girls thought for a moment,

だれでも皆 お父さんと ダンスに行けたらいいわね

and one girl suggested,

少女達は少し考えて

"Why don't we just take the dance in the jail?"

一人が提案しました

Most of the girls doubted the possibility of that,

｢刑務所でダンスパーティーをやるのはどう?｣

and said, "Are you crazy?

ほとんどの少女は無理だと思い こう言いました

Who is going to allow a bunch of little girls,

｢できるわけないわ！

dressed up — " (Laughter)

おめかしした女の子が大勢

" — to come inside a jail and dance with their daddies in Spongebob suits?"

刑務所に入って行って (笑）

Because that's what they called them.

スポンジ・ボブの服を着たパパ達と 踊るのを許可してくれるわけないわ」

I said, "Girls, well, well,

彼女達は囚人服をそう呼んでいたのです

you never know unless you ask."

私は言いました ｢まあ まあ

So a letter was written to the Richmond City Sheriff,

訊いてみるまでわからないわよ｣

signed collectively by each girl,

そこでリッチモンド刑務所所長宛に

and I would have to say, he is a very special sheriff.

少女達全員の著名入りで 手紙を書きました

He contacted me immediately and said,

あの所長さんは とても特別な方なんです

whenever there is an opportunity to bring families inside,

すぐに連絡をくれ言いました

his doors are always open.

刑務所内に囚人の家族を招く機会があれば

Because one thing he did know,

いつでも喜んで受け入れます と

that when fathers are connected to their children,

彼はわかっていたのです

it is less likely that they will return.

自らの子供達と触れ合える囚人たちは

So,

刑務所に戻ってくる確率が低くなることを

16 inmates and 18 girls were invited.

そうして

The girls were dressed in their Sunday best,

16人の受刑者と18人の娘たちの パーティーが実現しました

and the fathers traded in their yellow and blue jumpsuits

子供達は特別おしゃれに着飾り

for shirts and ties.

父親達は黄色と青のつなぎを

They hugged.

ワイシャツとネクタイに着替えました

They shared a full catered meal of chicken and fish.

彼らは抱き合い

They laughed together.

用意された鶏と魚のご馳走を楽しみ

It was beautiful.

共に笑いもしました

The fathers and daughters even experienced

心温まる光景でした

an opportunity to have a physical connection,

父親と娘達は

something that a lot of them didn't even have

長い間できなかった

for a while.

体と体のふれあいを

Fathers were in a space where they were able to

実現できたのです

make their daughters play,

父親は娘達を遊ばせてやれる

and pull out her chair and extend his hand for a dance.

スペースを与えられ

Even the guards cried.

娘の椅子を引き ダンスに誘いました

But after the dance,

看守達までも感動で泣いていました

we all realized that Dad still would be in jail.

でもダンスの後

So we needed to create something

父親達はそのまま刑務所に残るのが わかっていました

that they could take with them.

そこで持ち帰ることができる何かを

So we brought in Flip cams,

作る必要がありました

and we had them look at the Flip cams

小さなビデオカメラを持ち込み

and just interview each other --

カメラに向かって お互いに

their messages, their thoughts.

インタビューしてもらうことにしました

This was going to be used as a touchstone

メッセージや想いを記録するビデオです

so when they started to miss each other

これを基にして

and feel disconnected,

お互いが離れていて

they could reconnect through this image.

恋しくなったとき

I'll never forget that one girl looked in her father's eyes

このビデオを見て 繋がりを再確認できるようにです

with that camera and said,

私は一生忘れません ある少女が父親の目を見て

"Daddy, when you look at me, what do you see?"

カメラを通して言いました

Because our daddies are our mirrors

｢パパ 私を見るとき何が見える？｣

that we reflect back on

父親は娘が自分を見る鏡なんです

when we decide about what type of man we deserve,

私達は鏡に映る自分を見て

and how they see us for the rest of our lives.

自分にはどんな男性がふさわしいかを決め

I know that very well,

その男性が自分をどう見るのかを 決めるのです

because I was one of the lucky girls.

私にはそれがよくわかっています

I have had

私は恵まれた少女の一人だからです

my father in my life always.

私の父は

He's even here today.

いつも私のそばにいてくれました

(Applause)

今日もそこに座っています

And that is why it is extremely special

(拍手）

for me to make sure that these girls

だからこの少女達が

are connected to their fathers,

父親達と繋がれるようにすることは

especially those who are separated

私にとって特別大事なことで

because of barbed wires and metal doors.

有刺鉄線の柵や鉄のドアで

We have just created a form

離れている場合は特にです

for girls who have heavy questions on their heart

少女達の心の奥にある問い―

to be in a position to ask their fathers those questions

父親への質問を

and given the fathers the freedom to answer.

実際に父親に訊く場を設け

Because we know that the fathers

父親がそれに答える自由を私達は与えたのです

are even leaving with this one thought:

なぜなら私達にはわかっています

What type of woman am I preparing to put in the world?

父親達もある想いを抱いている事を―

Because a father is locked in

どんな女性として娘を世界に送り出せるだろう？

does not mean he should be locked out

父親が刑務所にいるからといって

of his daughter's life.

彼等を少女達の人生から

(Applause)

締め出すべきではないのです
