  • a common question among Isles candidates is how to start the essay.

  • In this video, we're going to look at a few openers that are appropriate in an Isles task to context.

  • If you come across new language patterns in this video, be sure to record them in your journal for review later.

  • This is a very important step, so don't forget to do it as always, that this video is helpful.

  • Please remember to leave alike and visit my block, but I'll silence dot com to accelerate your studies using my other online lessons and e books.

  • I also have writing courses that I run through email.

  • As you know, the introduction paragraph does a few critical things.

  • It is where the writer introduces the topic and narrows it to what is relevant to the essay.

  • It also declares the manner in which the topic will be approached in the essay, and this may or may not include the writers position.

  • As a unit.

  • The introduction paragraph establishes a plan for the essay and creates a foundation to which the essays supporting points can refer.

  • This, of course, makes it a precursor to strong cohesion in the essay, as a whole starting.

  • Such an important paragraph can be difficult.

  • But remember that I'll says he questions present a topical issue that is relevant to the modern world in some way, even if that means predicting a future relevant to a current trend.

  • For example, you may be asked to suggest how to address the current problem of pollution in heavily populated areas or whether humanity will ever wean itself off of its dependence on petrol.

  • So this means you're opening sentence will use language that communicates the contemporary and ongoing nature of the topic.

  • Have a look at these 10 suggestions for how to get an essay of this nature started after I finish reading each one, you will see a few examples of alternative topics and how these could be adapted to the same structure.

  • So the first idea for structure is blank.

  • Continue to blank comma, and this is causing blank.

  • So, for example, cities around the world continue to swell in size and this is causing serious traffic congestion.

  • So this would be a declaration of the topic, and then you would progress to show the reader what you plan to do with this topic in the rest of the essay.

  • The 2nd 1 blank is an unfortunate reality in the world today.

  • So this could be the growing dichotomy between the rich and poor is an unfortunate reality in the world today.

  • And, of course, when you're playing with this language and being creative with it, you could change unfortunate reality to any word or phrase you like, for example, a challenge or, um, a serious problem or something of that nature, or even flip it around to something that is positive, if that's what's asked in the question Number three.

  • Choosing Blank to Blank is an extremely important question for Blank.

  • So, for example, this would work with choosing where to attend.

  • University is a very important question for many young people in the modern world or, for example, something like choosing when to establish a career and then again, is an extremely important question for many young people in the world.

  • Or choosing whether to study a passion versus something attractive to employers is an extremely important question for many prospective university students.

  • Okay, suggestion for Blank is one of the major challenges in the world today, so you could stick in anything here.

  • That is sort of an ongoing problem for humanity, such as alleviating illiteracy or poverty.

  • Suggestion.

  • Five.

  • Over the past several years, Blank has been steadily increasing, and you could, of course, change increasing to decreasing or to progressively getting worse or whatever you need.

  • Really.

  • So we could say, Over the past several years, enrollment and foreign universities has been steadily increasing, which I think was, uh, there was a question quite recently about the rising number of foreign students in the world or people choosing to study outside of their home country.

  • I think that was the question, so something like this would be a fitting opening Number six.

  • The blank has proved to be a serious challenge for humanity in modern times.

  • And so, of course, you could stick in whatever the topic is tthe e.

  • Perhaps elimination of poverty or wth e or just smart phone addiction without an article has proved to be a serious challenge for humanity.

  • In modern times, number seven and often contested subject is the blank.

  • So if you were trying Thio go towards some sort of discussion style of essay or you're looking at various points of view, this might be a fitting way to open your essay.

  • Something, for example, and often contested subject is the age at which Children should first study a foreign language, which again was a recent question seen on the Isles.

  • Number eight blank are important considerations when blank.

  • So, for example, layout and design or important considerations when planning a town.

  • So you see the structure here, it's basically think a needs to be considered when doing thing be Number nine blank is an often debated topic, so once again you're sort of setting up a discussion.

  • This doesn't necessarily have to be discussion essay.

  • You could flip around in the next few sentences and then state your opinion on something if you wanted to.

  • But this could be, for example, the age at which Children should first study.

  • A foreign language is an often debated topic, and then you maybe get a bit more specific in the next sentence.

  • And then in the third sentence, you could state your opinion if you wanted to, or you could turn it around and say the S is gonna look at both sides of this issue before reaching some sort of conclusion.

  • Number 10 The growing presence of Blank is a pressing concern today, so this could be the growing presence that growing prevalence the growing rates of private vehicle ownership around the world, for example, is a pressing concern.

  • Today, you could word it like that.

  • You can, of course, Taylor, these opening sentences, as you need by substituting any of the words and phrases and language that you see, although I do encourage you to do all of your experimentation before you get into the examination.

  • So if you're going to trying new structures and play around with them and see, um, you know what works and what doesn't.

  • And of course, you should be doing this in partnership, ideally with a tutor who can tell you what is working and what is not working.

  • But do all of this before you get into the aisles.

  • When you're into your examination, you want to be using structures that you know are accurate and that you are capable of controlling.

  • So to give you a few ideas of the more common words that appear in these structures, you could replace question with consideration or problem or challenge or issue.

  • For example, choosing could become selecting, UM, something considered important could be, instead pressing or pertinent or critical major serious something that continues, You might want to substitute the word remains.

  • Even the various references to the modern world could instead be today or modern times contemporary or the world today.

  • So you can see there's a lot of experimentation and play that you could do with these things.

  • Different structures.

  • So as I was saying, these 10 ideas could start either an argument or discussion essay.

  • So basically, the nature of your examination of the topic has not yet been declared.

  • This will come in the sentences to follow, and there are a number of different ways that you can do that.

  • But that's outside of the scope for this video.

  • So maybe we'll examine that in an upcoming video.

  • So I hope that brief video gives you a bit of direction when it comes to writing the very first sentence in your essay.
