"When life gets you down, you know what you gotta do? Just keep swimming." — Dory, Finding Nemo.
Just keep swimming. Just keep on grinding. Just keep going! You know, if we watch the news these days, it’s full of negativity don’t you think? Everything seems dire (meaning serious or urgent) like it’s the end of the world and this may actually be true. The very thought of this is enough to ruin anyone’s day and feel defeated. However, when I watch a video like this, it gives me hope. There’s only a finite (limited in size or extent) amount of land on planet Earth. The beef industry is responsible for the deforestation (the action of clearing a wide area of trees) of the Amazon rainforest. Trees are cut and the land is converted into an area to raise cattle (cows). There’s a group of people in Italy who have come up with an interesting solution to this problem. Underwater greenhouses to grow food! How do they do it? Well, you gotta watch the video to find out! Then come back for today’s featured sentence! I’ll give you some time. Go! Come back when you’re done watching the clip!
Today’s featured sentence:
“Nemo's Garden is an alternative agriculture project where we are trying to find a way to grow plants underwater in underwater greenhouses.”
I’ll say that again.
“Nemo's Garden is an alternative agriculture project where we are trying to find a way to grow plants underwater in underwater greenhouses.”
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
Pronunciation Tips:
First word.
Alternative (aal · tur · nuh · tuhv)
Four syllables. The first syllable is Al (as in a l l, all), tur, nuh (short “u” sound) and tive (like the word “if” with a “t” in front). Alternative.
Next up!
Agriculture (a·gruh·kuhl·chr)
Four syllables. First is the letter a (ah), gruh (short “u” sound), kuhl (think of the word “cull”), chr (ch sound with an “er” ending). Agriculture.
And our last one for pronunciation would be three linking words!
Find a way
Link the “d” with “a” to become finda-way. Find a way!
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. Alternative (adj.) KK[ɔlˋtɝnətɪv] IPA/ɔːlˈtɜːnətɪv/
Definition
An alternative plan or method is one that you can use if you do not want to use another one.
Used in a sentence you could say,
“An alternative venue for the concert is being sought.”
Next word,
2. Agriculture (n.) KK[ˋægrɪ͵kʌltʃɚ] IPA[ˈægrɪkʌltʃə(r)]
Definition
farming
An example would be,
“The area depends on agriculture for most of its income.”
And lastly,
3. Greenhouse(n.) KK[ˋgrin͵haʊs] IPA [ˈgriːnhaʊs]
Definition:
a building with a roof and sides made of glass, used for growing plants that need warmth and protect
Used in a sentence you can say:
“There’s a lot of tomatoes in this greenhouse.”
Outro
Pretty cool huh? Not only can this be sustainable but the plants even grow faster with the added water pressure! It’s also healthier since there’ll be no pests so we wouldn’t have to spray the plants down with anything! Can you imagine this on a bigger scale?! I really hope more research is done on this as soon as possible! The planet is, after all, 70 percent water! We have plenty of space for underwater greenhouses! It’s about time we combine technology with our outdated ways of growing food! Alright guys, do your thing and record your recordings!
