Over the years, Disney has become known for its use of audio animatronics in their rides

and attractions at the Disney theme parks.

The term Audio Animatronic has been used by Disney since 1961

{Tiki Bird} ooooo Audio Animatronics?

{Walt Disney} Right audio animatronics.

with some of the very first examples being the birds in the tiki room at Disneyland and

Abraham Lincoln at the 1964 Worlds fair.

When audio animatronics were first used, the range of motion was fairly limited.

To this day, there’s still many of these limited motion animatronics that can be seen

in older attractions at the theme parks.

Now as time’s gone on, the animatronic technology has advanced, giving the figures much more

fluid lifelike movements.

Many attractions at Walt Disney World have marked pivotal points in Disney animatronic

history.

There’s one audio animatronic in particular that needs to be mentioned, which unofficially

is the first animatronic on our list.

It’s no one other than the Wicked Witch of the West from the Great Movie Ride.

Although this animatronic has recently become extinct, it had to be mentioned.

Making her debut in 1989, it was the very first A-100 figure created by Disney and was

the most advanced audio animatronic created to date.

Well it actually wasn’t fully created by Disney.

See when developing these figures, Disney contracted a company called Sarcos Robitics

to build the A-100 figures in the 80s and 90s.

This technology became exclusive to Disney.

If you ever got a chance to see the Wicked Witch of the west in person, at first glance

you’d be fooled by the movements that it was an actor not a robot.

{Wicked Witch} But just try to stay out of my way.

Just try.

I’ll get you my pretty and your little dog too.

Now fast forward to 2017, also at Walt Disney World, when the newest and most advanced audio

animatronic made its debut at the parks.

So today, we’re gonna be counting down the top 10 must see Audio Animatronics at Walt

Disney World.

Number 10- C3Po We’re starting our list off at Star Tours

in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The ride opened in December of 1989 and C3Po can be found in the ride’s queue.

{C3Po} R2 that reminds me, lets run a diagnostic on the candriod.

He’s programmed so it appears he’s addressing people in the queue and will definitely keep

you entertained while you wait.

{Captain} Hey, you droids in transport 1401.

Get back to work!

{c3Po} Now see what you’ve done.

We’ll lose our jobs for sure.

In 2010 Star Tours went down for a refurb and re opened in May 2011 with a C3Po animatronic

also in the cabin.

Star Tours has 6 simulator cabins at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, so in total the attraction

has 7 different C3Po animatronics.

Number 9- Benjamin Franklin The American Pavilion in World Showcase at

Epcot is home to an attraction called The American Adventure and features the next audio

animatronic on our list.

The attraction opened in 1982 and features 35 audio animatronics that help tell the story

of pivotal moments in American History.

Benjamin Franklin appears throughout the entire show, but specifically we’re talking about

the Benjamin Franklin animatronic in the 2nd scene.

This figure was revolutionary for the time since it gives the impression he’s waking

up stairs and walking across the platform during the show.

Its very convincing when you see it in person and although this show might not be for everyone,

its definitely worth checking out for this specific animatronic.

{Benjamin Franklin} We must carefully justify this separation.

Number 8- Captain Jack Sparrow Now as we head over into Adventureland at

Magic Kingdom, we’ll find the next animatronic on our list in pirates of the Caribbean.

In Florida, the ride uses 123 different pirate and animal animatronics but there’s a few

figures on the ride that are more advanced than others.

In 2006 the original Pirates of the Caribbean was refurbished to include A-100 figures of

Captain Jack Sparrow.

Animating 1 second of movement for an A-100 figure takes 8 hours to program and Captain

Jack appears three times in the ride, perfectly capturing Johnny Depp’s mannerisms and movements

from his character in the film.

{Captain Jack Sparrow} Drink up lads, theres treasure enough for all.

Other notable animatronics to keep an eye out for are Captain Barbosa

{Barbosa} Show yourself you miserable cure

the pooped pirate or buccaneer

{Buccaneer} here i’ll be holding the treasure map and the key as well

and of course the auctioneer.

{Auctioneer} Shift your cargo dear.

Show them your larboard side.

We wants the red head.

Lay there you folks and swab

Number 7- Buzz Lightyear Staying in Magic Kingdom we’re gonna take

a peak into Tomorrowland at Buzz Lightyear’s Space Rangers spin.

It opened in Oct of 1998 and although the ride’s looking a bit tired and could use

a good overhaul, the life-sized Buzz Lightyear animatronic in the queue has held its ground

very well.

Buzz Lightyear appears to be the first A-100 figure to utilize a projected animated face

allowing for more expressive features.

{Buzz Lightyear} All right you junior space rangers, listen up.

The green squad will retrieve the power cells, while the rest of you concentrate on those

robots.

Now there is another Buzz Lightyear animatronic at the end of the ride, and although it also

utilizes the projected face, it has very limited movement compared to the animatronic in the

queue.

This is the one to pay extra attention to.

Number 6- Muppet Mobile Lab The next animatronic is from a much different

type of attraction than what we’ve talked about so far.

Hello everybody

The Dr Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker animatronics from Muppet Mobile Lab are the only animatronic

figures to live on as part of Disney’s Living Character initiative and now has a permeant

home at Epcot.

{Dr Bunsen} We’ve been invited by Mr Mickey Mouse himself

The unit and animatronic figures are controlled by a cast member in a remote location who

uses 8 cameras concealed on the unit, including one in the bridge of Bunsen’s glasses to

allow them to interact with the guests.

{Dr Bunsen} Well if your name is Sarah then lets cal you Sarah.

{Sarah} Yea its Sarah

{Dr Bunsen} Alright lets chant her name.

Sarah!

Sarah!

Sarah!

Muppet mobile lab isn’t listed on the park’s times guide but according to a Disney cast

member on a recent visit to the park, the show performs 3 times a day around 10am, 12

noon and 2 pm behind Spaceship Earth.

{Dr Bunsen} Give yourself a round of applause for being such a wonderful crowd.

Number 5- Hopper The centre piece of Disney’s Animal Kingdom

is the tree of life, and hidden in the base of the tree is an attraction called It’s

Tough to be A Bug.

It’s a 4-D attraction thats kinda underrated but its definitely worth checking it out for

one animatronic alone.

{Hopper} Flick, what are these humans wearing on their heads?

Hopper, the film’s villain, stands an impressive 8 feet tall and has 74 functions built into

the animatronic.

{Hopper} Friends?

Get this loser out of my sight, Its really a shame that Hopper’s only used

for such a short segment in the attraction but when its Tough to be A Bug opened in 1998,

he was one of Disney’s most advanced and complex audio animatronics to date.

{Hopper} If you had it your way, you would destroy us all.

But you never will

Number 4- The Seven Dwarfs In 2014 at Magic Kingdom the park debuted

the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train ride which completed the new Fantasyland expansion.

The ride is a coaster, dark ride hybrid and features 7 state of the art animatronics.

Walt Disney Imagineering has taken audio animatronic technology to a new level with all the 7 Dwarfs

and they describe the figures as 3-D Audio Animatronics.

The Dwarfs utilize projected faces, similar to what was done with Buzz Lightyear, but

since then, technology had advanced allowing imagineers much more precision in the animatronic

animation.

The projected faces allowed the squash and stretch animation seen in the film to come

right to life in the animatronics.

{Doc} Heigh ho.

Heigh ho!

The fluidity of the characters is incredible and all the elements together really brings

these characters to life.

Now the dark portion of the ride happens pretty quickly compared to the speed of your classic

dark ride, so its a little tough to get a good detailed look at all the animatronics

on one ride.

The line can be very long for this ride so make sure you grab a fast pass or head in

line during the fireworks so you don’t miss these amazing audio animatronics.

{Dwarfs} Where a million diamonds shine.

Number 3- The Frozen Crew Once again our list is bringing us back into

world Showcase at Epcot and this time its in the Norway pavilion with Frozen Ever After.

The animations in this ride are top notch.

At the time in 2016, they were the most advanced animatronics the company had produced featuring

Disney’s first all-electric Audio-Animatronics, as opposed to pneumatics or hydraulics that

previous figures used.

{olaf} Elsa’s made a magic winter show, from summer snow.

For Sven and me and you

The Olaf animatronics throughout the ride and Elsa during the Let it Go sequence are

ones to pay special attention to.

Using all electric animatronics increased the fluidity of the characters even more than

what had previously been developed.

Just look at how fluid Elsa appears, you could easily mistake her movements for animation.

Now although Olaf is small, he’s actually one of the most complex characters created

due to his size.

All the components that allow him to have such life like movements needed to be crammed

into a very small and compact space, but imagineers did a great job at bringing all these characters

to life.

Number 2- Ursula As part of the new Fantasyland expansion,

Under the Sea Journey of the Little Mermaid opened at Magic Kingdom.

The ride is filled with animatronics but the 12 foot wide and 7 1/2 feet tall Ursula audio

animatronic definitely stands out.

{Ursula} Caspian Sea

Although we’ve seen animatronics appear on the list earlier that have been more advanced,

this figure based on her shear size, is very impressive and brought her to the number 2

spot.

{Ursula} I admit that in the past I’ve been a nasty.

They weren’t kidding when they called me, well, a witch.

When you’re up close watching Ursula, you see just how fluid and precise her movements

are including the squash and stretch of her torso.

Imagineers brought all her characterization traits from the film to life right in front

of you with this awesome animatronic.

Number 1- Na’vi Shaman of Songs Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park is home

to the number one animatronic on our list; Na’vi Shaman.

In May of 2017 the Na’vi River Journey ride opened in Pandora and is home to the most

advanced animatronic Disney has built to date.

{Na’vi} Ah na ne a, ooo

This audio animatronic takes things to a whole new level in terms of expressiveness and fluidity

of motion.

Disney reverted back to their original non projected face animatronics and truly they’ve

hit a home run with this one.

{Na’vi} Ma e wa.

Ma e wa.

Ma e wa.

As your riding by in your boat, just take a look at her eyes and you’ll see how alive

they appear.

Truly its an animatronic you need to see on your next trip to Walt Disney World.

The line does get long but its definitely worth the wait to experience this one of a

kind audio animatronic.

Well if you’ve made it this far into the video, you’ve probably been waiting to see

the Yeti from Expedition Everest appear on the list.

Well heres the thing: as it stands the Yeti doesn’t work and hasn’t worked for quite

some time now.

It’s been years.

We have a full video on the Yeti you can watch; Theres a link in the card on the right hand

But the Yeti did deserved an honourable mention and can be seen every day, completely static

with a strobe light, go disco yeti, at Animal Kingdom- but hopefully he gets fixed one day

because he was impressive.
