At the main tiger compound, Giles and his team are full-time carers for ten adult tigers and Spot and Stripe have been gradually exposed to them.

主に使われているトラの飼育区画では、ジャイルズさんがチームの仲間とともに 24 時間体制で 10 頭の大人のトラの面倒をみています。スポットとストライプも少しずつ大人たちと触れ合う機会を増やしてきました。

Seeing the adult tigers through the glass is one thing, but their next big milestone is to socialize and meet one of the adults in the open air.

まずは大人のトラたちにガラス越しに会うことから始めます。そして、次の大きな儀式は、仕切りのないところで、1 頭のトラと対面させ、慣れさせることです。

There's going to be lots of interesting smells in here with all the other tigers, like, you know, the big guys come through here on a regular basis and it's much, much more of a sensory stimulation for them in here, in terms of the smell than just being round the front of the glass.

ここだと (トラの子の) 興味を引く色んなにおいがするんです。他のトラたちのね。例えば、大人のトラたちはここを定期的に通り過ぎるから。トラの子たちにとってはものすごい感覚刺激になるんです。ただガラスの向こう側にいるよりもずっとね。

In just over a month, the cubs will be too big to live at home.

たった 1 か月で、トラの子たちは人間の家では暮らせないほど大きくなってしまいます。

And they need to be accepted by the adults for them to live here full time.

トラの子たちは大人に受け入れてもらわなければなりません。ここでずっと暮らすためです。

He's a little bit nervous, as you would expect.

この子はちょっと緊張しています。お察しの通り。

You can see he's smelling all the smells around.

そこらじゅうのにおいを嗅いでいますよね。

There's lots of smells of big predators, other tigers around, so you got to be a little bit cautious, naturally.

(トラ以外の)大きな肉食動物や、他のトラのにおいがかなりするので、少し用心深くなっているんです。自然とね。

In the wild, an unrelated tiger could easily injure the cubs.

自然界では、血のつながりのないトラが、子トラたちをいとも簡単に傷つけてしまうこともあります。

And Giles hopes Maneki won't display any threatening behaviours.

ジャイルズさんは、マネキが威嚇行動を取らないことを願っています。

So, this is Maneki.

これはマネキ。

Well, this is the very, very first time that Maneki's seen any cubs whatsoever.

実は、今回初めてマネキはトラの子に会ったんです。

Tigers communicate using a range of vocalizations.

トラは声の音域を利用してコミュニケーションを取ります。

And the most common nonthreatening sound they make is called a "chuff."

敵意がないことを表す時の最も典型的な声を「チャフ(汽車のシュッシュッという音)」と言います。

Chuffing is reassuring.

チャフィングが出れば安心です。

So, they're chuffing at her.

子どもたちがマネキに向かってチャフィングしてますね。

They're chuffing at each other.

お互いにチャフィングし合っています。

So, it's a reassuring type of noise, but it's also a way of greeting.

つまり、これは安心できる音です。と、同時に挨拶でもあります。

So, she speaks your language, not like Ruby.

マネキがお前たちの言葉を話してるよ。ルビーとは違うね。

Tigers are one of the few cats in the world to communicate in this way.

トラは、こんなふうにコミュニケーションをとる数少ないネコ科の動物に属しています。

These guys are very inquisitive, so their facial expression with their ears is exactly that.

この子たちはすごく好奇心旺盛な様子だ。顔の表情や耳がまさにそう言ってるよ。

Now he's being a bit submissive for the fact that he's putting his ears slightly back.

今度は少し服従を表していますね。耳がわずかに後ろの方に倒れていますから。

He's getting down low.

低い姿勢を取っています。

So, that's just being a little bit unsure, if you like, whereas Maneki, you can see how relaxed she is.

つまり、ちょっぴり不安になっているんです。でも、マネキはすごくリラックスしていますよね。

She's sat there.

そこに座りました。

She's fairly happy.

けっこう機嫌がいいですよ。

So, Stripe, he's getting a little bit close.

ストライプは、少し近づいて行っています。

He's being cautious in the way in which he approaches.

近づき方が慎重になっていますね。

You're brave, yeah.

Look at his face.

この子の顔を見てみてください。

He's very, very cautious, like he wants to go up a bit closer, but he's also a little nervous, but that's to be expected.

ものすごく慎重になっています。もう少し近づきたいんだけど、少し緊張もしている感じです。でもこれは想定内のことです。

Like, look at the size of her in comparison to him...

だって、マネキの大きさを見てください。この子と比べてみて…。

And she's reacting a little, she doesn't want to be surprised.

マネキの反応はほんのわずかです。驚かされるのが嫌なんです。

The cubs have won over Maneki and Giles is relieved.

子トラたちがマネキのお眼鏡にかなって、ジャイルズさんはほっとしました。

For a very first encounter, you couldn't have asked for it to go any better or any smoother.

初対面では、これ以上、もっとスムーズな運びは望めないでしょう。

You know, no one's being aggressive.

ね、誰も攻撃的になっていないし。

No one's showing over interest, or too much interest, so... and the cubs are coping really well.

興味を表し過ぎている様子でもないというか、好奇心が暴走しているわけでもないというか…。あの子たちはとてもうまくやりました。
