Then, she wrings the birds' necks

and cuts them open to examine their entrails for divine messages.

Camma is a druid.

キャマはドルイドです

This means she conducts religious rites,

ドルイドは宗教的な儀式を行ったり

but she also serves as a judge, healer, and scholar,

判事や治療者や学者の役割を担ったり

teaching children and mediating conflict between Celtic tribes.

子供たちにものを教えたり ケルトの部族間の紛争の仲裁を行います

She began her studies as a child,

彼女は子供の頃から勉強を始め

memorizing the countless details necessary to perform her many roles,

数多くの役割をこなすために必要な 膨大な量の情報を覚えました

since the druids' knowledge is considered too sacred to record in writing.

Like many druids, she spent years studying in Britain.

Now, she is a resident Druid of the Veneti tribe

This morning, the omens are troubling.

今朝は悩ましい予兆がありました

They tell of war and strife, as they often have in recent months.

戦争と争いについて この数カ月 同じようなお告げが続いていました

A neighboring tribe, the Redones,

近隣の部族のリドネ族に

have raided their village and stolen cattle in broad daylight twice this fall.

村を襲われ この秋は２度も 白昼堂々 牛を盗まれたのです

The children have gathered around to watch her work.

子供たちが集まって 彼女の働く様子を見ています

Camma plays her lyre and sings to them.

キャマはリラを弾いて歌います

She weaves stories of the powerful kings who once ruled their land –

かつてこの土地を支配していた 強力な王のお話や

brave warriors who were slain naked in combat but who will be reborn,

戦いのさなか 裸で死んだ 勇敢な兵士たちのお話を聞かせ

as will all the Celts.

ケルト人たちが皆そうであるように いつか生まれ変わると話しました

When the children go off to help in the fields,

子供たちが畑仕事を 手伝うために帰ると

Camma heads across the village to visit an old woman with an eye infection.

キャマは村を通って 目を病んだおばあさんを訪ねます

On the way to the old woman's hut,

おばあさんの小屋に行く道中

she passes men salting pigs for the winter food supply

冬の食糧用に豚肉を 塩漬けにする男たちや

and women weaving clothing from dyed wool.

染めた羊毛で布を織る女たちを 通りすがります

She delivers a remedy for the injured eye–

キャマは傷ついた目に 効く薬を届けます

it's made from mistletoe, a sacred healing plant,

聖なる癒しの植物である ヤドリギでできた薬ですが

but deadly if used incorrectly.

この植物は誤って用いると 死に至るものです

From there, Camma visits the chieftain to discuss the omens.

そこから キャマはお告げについて 話し合うため 族長を訪ねます

She convinces him to go and talk through their problems with their neighbors.

彼女は近隣部族を訪れて 問題を話し合うよう説得しました

Accompanied by several warriors,

戦士数名を引き連れて

they head through the forest and demand a meeting

森を通り抜け

outside the Redones' village walls.

リドネ族の村の防壁の外で 話し合いを要求しました

The Redones' representatives bring their own druid,

リドネ族の代表は 自分たちのドルイドを連れてきました

who Camma recognizes from the annual gathering in central Gaul

ドルイドのリーダーが選ばれる 年に１度の中央ガリアでの会合で

where head druids are elected.

キャマが会ったことのある ドルイドでした

The chieftains immediately begin to argue and threaten each other.

族長たちはすぐに口論を始め 互いを脅し合います

Camma steps between the opposing sides to stop them from fighting—

キャマは反対する双方の間に入り 言い争いを止めるよう仲裁しました

they must honor her authority.

彼らはキャマの権限を 尊重せねばなりません

Finally, the Redones agree to pay Camma's tribe several cattle.

最終的にリドネ族がキャマの部族に 牛を何頭か渡すことに同意しました

In spite of this resolution, Camma still feels uneasy on the long walk home.

解決したにもかかわらず キャマは 長い帰り道で 不穏なものを感じます

As they approach the village walls, a bright streak shoots across the sky—

村の防壁に近づくと 上空に明るい光が飛び交います

another omen, but of what?

またも予兆です 何の予兆なのでしょう？

Back home, Camma sits among the elders for her evening meal of porridge,

家に戻ると キャマは 長老たちと共に おかゆと

a bit of meat, and a cup of wine.

少しの肉と１杯のワインの夕食を囲みます

While they were out during the day, an intercepted parchment arrived.

日中に出かけている間に 取り押さえた文書が届きました

Camma recognizes the writing immediately.

キャマはすぐさま 文書の言葉を理解しました

Although the druids are forbidden from recording their knowledge,

ドルイドたちがその知識を 記録するのは禁じられていますが

she and many other young druids can read Latin.

彼女をはじめ 若いドルイドたちは ラテン語を読むことができます

From the message, she learns that the Romans are drawing closer to their lands.

文書から 彼女は自分たちの土地に ローマ人が接近していることを知ります

Some of the elders say that the tribe should flee to the nearby hills and hide,

長老の中には近くの丘に逃げて 隠れるべきだと言う者もいましたが

but Camma counsels them to trust in the gods and remain in their home.

キャマは神々を信じ 留まるべきだと助言しました

Privately, she has her doubts.

でも 心中には迷いがありました

Should the Romans reach them, her power to help might be limited.

ローマ人がやって来れば 彼女にできることは 限られるかもしれないのです

Unlike the other Celtic tribes,

他のケルト系の部族とは違い

Roman legions have no regard for the druids' sacred role as peacemakers.

ローマの軍団は仲裁人としての ドルイドの神聖な役割には気にも留めません

Before going to bed,

床に就く前に

she observes the course of the planets and consults her charts,

彼女は惑星の動きを観察し 星図を参考に

trying to make sense of the meteor she saw earlier.

The signs are converging on a larger threat than their neighbors.
