One day, Little Red Riding Hood's mother said to her, "Take this basket of goodies to your grandma's cottage, but don't talk to strangers on the way!”

ある日お母さんが、「このカゴに入ったおやつをおばあちゃんのお家まで届けてちょうだい。でも途中で知らない人と話をしたらダメよ！」と赤ずきんちゃんに言いました。

Promising not to, Little Red Riding Hood skipped off.

知らない人とは話しをしないと約束して、赤ずきんちゃんは家を出ました。

On her way, she met the Big Bad Wolf who asked, "Where are you going, little girl?”

途中で赤ずきんちゃんは大きな悪いオオカミに出会い、オオカミは「お嬢ちゃん、どこに行くんだい？」と訊いてきました。

"To my grandma's, Mr. Wolf!" she answered.

「おばあちゃんのお家にいくのよ、オオカミさん！」と赤ずきんちゃんは答えました。

The Big Bad Wolf then ran to her grandmother's cottage, much before Little Red Riding Hood, and knocked on the door.

すると大きな悪いオオカミはおばあちゃんの家まで走っていって、赤ずきんちゃんが到着するよりずっと前に家に着きドアをノックしました。

When Grandma opened the door, he locked her up in the cupboard.

おばあちゃんがドアを開けると、なんとオオカミはおばあちゃんをタンスの中に閉じ込めてしまいました。

The wicked wolf then wore Grandma's clothes and lay on her bed, waiting for Little Red Riding Hood.

悪いオオカミはそれからおばあちゃんの服を着て、ベッドに横になり赤ずきんちゃんが着くのを待ちました。

When Little Red Riding Hood reached the cottage, she entered and went to Grandma's bedside.

赤ずきんちゃんは、おばあちゃんの家に着くと、中に入っておばあちゃんのベッド脇にやってきました。

"My! What big eyes you have, Grandma!”she said in surprise.

「あら、おばあちゃんってとっても大きな目をしてるのね！」と赤ずきんちゃんは驚いて言いました。

"All the better to see you with, my dear!”replied the wolf.

「お前のことをちゃんとよく見るためだよ！」とオオカミは答えます。

"My! What big ears you have, Grandma!" said Little Red Riding Hood.

「あら、おばあちゃんってとっても大きな耳をしてるのね！」と赤ずきんちゃんは言いました。

"All the better to hear you with, my dear!" said the wolf.

「お前の言っていることをちゃんと聞くためだよ！」とオオカミは答えます。

"What big teeth you have, Grandma!”said Little Red Riding Hood.

「おばあちゃんの歯ってとっても大きいのね！」と赤ずきんちゃんは言いました。

"All the better to eat you with!" growled the wolf, pouncing on her.

「お前を食べてしまうためだよ！」そう唸ると、オオカミは赤ずきんちゃんに飛びかかりました。

Little Red Riding Hood screamed, and the woodcutters in the forest came running to the cottage.

赤ずきんちゃんは叫び声をあげ、森で仕事をしていた木こりが家まで助けに駆けつけました。

They beat the Big Bad Wolf and rescued Grandma from the cupboard.

木こりは大きな悪いオオカミを退治して、おばあちゃんをタンスから助け出しました。

Grandma hugged Little Red Riding Hood with joy.

おばあちゃんは喜んで赤ずきんちゃんを抱きしめました。

The Big Bad Wolf ran away never to be seen again.

大きな悪いオオカミは逃げていって、2度と姿を現しませんでした。
