Of those people, how many of you can actually describe one

どんなものか 実際に 説明できるという方は？

without saying "that big thing"?

「あの大きいやつ」はナシですよ？

Already a smaller percentage of the general population.

既に全体のうち少数に なってしまいましたね

Let's make that level of refinement our goal for today.

さっきのレベルの知識を得て頂くのを 今日の目標にしましょう

To do so, we'll start with the violin.

そのために まず ヴァイオリンの話から始めましょう

Everybody knows what a violin is

ヴァイオリンがどんなものかは 誰でもご存知です

even if you live in a little cave, you come out now and again,

小さな洞穴に住んでいて たまに出てくるという人でさえ

and most likely, you've bumped into a violin some way or another.

どこかでヴァイオリンに 出会ってきたことでしょう

You probably also know what a cello is.

また チェロがどんなものかも おそらくご存知でしょう

Maybe you even know the instrument between a violin and a cello

ヴァイオリンとチェロの 間の楽器でさえ ご存知かもしれません

called a viola.

ヴィオラです

If you don't, however, you really shouldn't beat yourself up.

しかし ご存知なくても 自分を責めなくて構いません

Those able to differentiate a violin

ヴァイオリンを

from either viola or a stick mixer for that matter

ヴィオラやら 手持ちミキサーやらと

is already a rather small percentage of the general population.

区別できるのは ごく一握りの人たちです

The double bass is the lowest of the orchestral string instruments:

ダブル・ベースはオーケストラで用いる 弦５部の最低音を受け持ちます

that being violin, viola, cello, double bass respectively.

弦５部とは ヴァイオリン、ヴィオラ、 チェロ、ダブルベースです

Outside of the orchestra, basses can also be found

ベースは オーケストラ以外だと

in jazz bands, blues ensembles, combos, Klezmer bands

ジャズバンド、ブルースアンサンブル、 コンボ、クレズマーバンド

and various other musical constellations.

その他 様々な編成の音楽で 使われています

Within the orchestra,

オーケストラでは

the bass is played bowed,

ベースは弓で演奏されます

either overhand or the French hold,

上から持つ フランス式と

or underhand or the German hold,

下から持つ ドイツ式があります

or as the Germans themselves like to call it "the correct hold."

ドイツ式の人たちはこちらを 「正しい持ち方」と自称します

(Laughter)

Why those of us outside of France and Germany play the bow holds we do

我々のように フランスや ドイツ以外の者の 弓の持ち方は

has more often than not to do with what our teachers played

たいてい 先生の弾き方や

and what their teachers played and so on and so on.

先生の先生の そのまた先生の 弾き方と関係しています

By the way, in case you're wondering

ところで この楽器がなぜ

why the instrument is called the double bass,

ダブルベースと呼ばれるのか 疑問をお持ちの方のために言うと

it is not because it is twice as big as a normal bass,

通常のベースの ２倍サイズだからではありません

which, if you hang out with bass players,

ベース奏者と つきあいのある方なら

you know there is no such thing as a normal bass,

通常のベースなんてものは 存在しないのをご存知でしょう

but it is rather to signify

むしろこれが意味しているのは

that it plays twice as low as the cello or that it doubles the cello line.

ベースがチェロの２倍低い音を出す つまり弦がチェロの２倍長いという意味です

What does this instrument sound like?

この楽器はどんな音がするのでしょう？

At first glance, the sound we expect from a bass

ベースを一目見て 想像する音というのは

is something along the lines of...

こんな感じです

That's fine and interesting,

結構です いい音だ

but then, maybe you've also known a bass in other contexts.

でもそれ以外にも ご存知かもしれません

Maybe you've, I don't know, watched a few shark movies now and again,

時々 サメの映画なんかを 観たりするかもしれませんね

and known ...

Trivia for today:

ここで今日の豆知識です

a former teacher of mine actually was the bass player for "Jaws."

私の前の先生は実際に 『ジョーズ』のベース奏者でした

He had come back from a recording session in New York and said,

彼はニューヨークでのレコーディングから 戻ってくるとこう言いました

"You wouldn't believe it. I got paid today to play two notes."

「信じられるか？２つの音符を 弾いただけで 金をもらったんだ」

Both of those contexts aren't really much more

than we would expect to hear from a tuba.

チューバ奏者にもありがちなものです

If there are any tubists in the audience,

but let's be honest;

But I'm thankful for the tuba because if it weren't for the tuba,

I actually wouldn't be standing here today.

The biggest distinction of my youth

子どもの頃の私で もっとも際立っていたのは

was that of being one of the two fattest kids

小学校と高校で

in my elementary school and high school.

最も太った子どもの２人に 入ってしまったことです

So the question is: what do you do with the fat kid

問題は その太った子どもが

to keep him from watching "Knight Rider" reruns all day?

『ナイトライダー』の再放送を 一日中 見続けないようにするにはどうするか？

Well, you hand him a trombone,

トロンボーンを持たせたらいいんです

and if he gets any fatter, which I unfortunately did,

もっと太ったら まあ不幸にも私のことですが

then you hand him a tuba.

チューバを持たせればいいんです

I played both, but unfortunately, practiced neither.

私は両方を演奏はしましたが どちらも練習しませんでした

It wasn't until I discovered the double bass at the late age of 17

17歳の終わり頃に ダブルベースに出会い

that actually interested me enough to practice it,

練習しようと思えるほど 興味を引かれて

and eventually attend the conservatory in New York, and then eventually decide,

とうとうニューヨークの音楽学校に通い そして最終的に決めたんです

"Well, the classical music isn't narrow enough.

「クラシック音楽では 幅が広すぎる

The bass isn't narrow enough.

ベースでも広すぎる

I need to study the historic bass," which is what this instrument is,

古楽器のベースに絞らないと」と つまりこの楽器のことです

and I came here in Basel in 2004 to do so.

そのために2004年に ここバーゼルに来たわけです

If there are any expats in the audience, you know that after New York,

駐在員の方がおられたら お分かりでしょうが

the move was a bit of a gastronomic masochism.

ニューヨークからの転居は ちょっと 食事面ではマゾ的です

(Laughter)

The upside is that I now get to live

良い面を挙げれば 私は今や

in one of the most culturally rich and beautiful European cities

最も文化的に豊かで美しい ヨーロッパの街に住んでいます

which, let's face it, is really not such a bad fate

ほら これは キャッツキルや ロングアイランド出身の

for a fat kid from the Catskills and Long Island.

太った子どもの行きつく先としては そう悪くありません

(Laughter)

I do believe the sound on this instrument

私は信じています この楽器の音色は

is much more interesting than the sound of my own voice.

私の声よりも はるかに魅力的です

So I'd like to share with you one of my favorite pieces

では皆さんに 私の大好きな曲を ひとつ紹介しましょう

which is from the classical period,

古典派音楽からです

which is from the composer Johann Baptist Wanhal.

ヨハン・バプティスト・ ヴァンハル作曲

Both, the piece and this instrument,

曲もこの楽器も

were created just about the year 1770.

じつに1770年頃に作られたものです
