Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Verb Phrase 181. The verb phrase today is to get
ahead. Yeah. We have five meanings today and we'll give definitions and of course
examples for each of these five meanings. Here's the first one to progress or
advance in life. Okay. Many people still believe that you need a college
education to get ahead in life. So to advance in life. So that's one of the
ways that we use it. Or we have a second example for this one too. Some women
complain of hitting a glass ceiling and no longer feel they can get ahead in
their career. So if they hit that glass ceiling maybe that's their limits. They
don't feel they can advance more beyond that. Okay. Good.
Number two. Sometimes we just get head to simply mean to save money. I'm trying to
put away money for a house but I cannot get ahead these days. Meaning I can't
really save that money. They cut my hours at work and my expenses have been going
up. So it's twofold going against her and she's not able to get ahead by saving
money. All right number three. To move ahead of someone or something. So this is
physically to get ahead of them. I'm trying to make this train, but I cannot get
ahead of this class of small elementary students blocking the road. So he's just
trying to pass them by maybe. He's trying to rush. He knows the trains about to
leave and if they weren't there maybe he could run maybe could almost make it. But
they're blocking his way. They're slowing him down. They're small children. He can't
afford to run and he doesn't want to knock any of them down. So he's probably
not going to make it. Because they are blocking his way. He cannot get ahead of
them. Physically get ahead of them. Okay. Good. And let's see number four here. To
do better or beat someone or something. And you know, we can get ahead of them that way.
We are too many games behind the first-place team this late in the season.
We don't have enough time left to get ahead of them. So to get into first place.
Maybe they're running out of time. They can't get ahead of that. All right. Number
five here. To take action before doing something or something is revealed or gets known. So
you're trying to get ahead of like a story or get ahead of a report. That
company tried to get ahead of the scandal about to be reported and do some
damage control. So they start coming out and saying some things to try to defend
themselves. Even before the story got reported. They tried to get ahead of the
story. So to try to you know, lower it. You know, limit it.Try to do some damage
control before it got out of control. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's
clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
