A little bit expensive

Or “Really Really Expensive”

あるいは「本当に本当に高い」。

What are you supposed to call those things?

あれを何と呼べと言うんだ？

Before we talk about “Cheap” or “Expensive”

安い」「高い」を語る前に

We need to know what to call “Money”

私たちは "お金 "をどう呼ぶべきかを知る必要がある

For Americans the most common is either “Dollars” or “Bucks”

アメリカ人にとって最も一般的なのは "Dollars "か "Bucks "である。

Both are okay

どちらも問題ない

For example, how much are these kicks (sneakers)?

Two hundred bucks

200ドル

How much is that house over there?

A million dollars

Alright, now that you're comfortable with “Dollars” and “Bucks”

We can now learn different levels of of “Cheap” and “Expensive”

For this example, we are going to use my favorite: Coconut Strawberry Bubble Tea

The average price of bubble tea in the US is about three dollars, give or take

So if you go to a shop and they charge, say, two fifty

Then you can say, “Hey that's not bad”

The prices aren't bad

Or “That's pretty good

とか「なかなかいいね」とか。

Or if you want to be more specific you can say

もっと具体的に言うなら、次のように言うこともできる。

“That's not a bad price” or “That's a pretty good price”

"悪くない値段だ "とか "かなりいい値段だ "とか。

Hey I like this bubble tea shop, the prices are pretty good

このバブルティー・ショップが好きなんだ。

Now maybe you want it to be even cheaper

もっと安くしたいだろう

So you walk down the street

通りを歩く

And this shop charges two dollars

この店は2ドル

So you can say “Hey, that's a good deal”

だから、"おい、これはお買い得だ "と言えるんだ。

How much is the bubble tea again?

バブルティーはいくらでしたっけ？

Two dollars?

2ドル？

That's a good deal

それは良い取引だ

Or, “That's a bargain”

あるいは、"お買い得だ"

How much is the bubble tea here?

ここのバブルティーはいくらですか？

Two bucks?

2ドル？

Wow, that's a bargain

これはお買い得だ

But

だが

BUT!!!

しかし、だ！

Maybe that's still not cheap enough for you

それでもまだ十分安くはないかもしれないが

So you walk down the street again

それでまた通りを歩く

And you get to the last shop.

そして最後の店にたどり着く。

And they only charge a buck for a bubble tea

バブル・ティーは1ドルで飲める。

So you can say “That's a steal!”

だから "お買い得だ！"と言える。

How much is the bubble tea here?

ここのバブルティーはいくらですか？

A dollar?!

ドル？

Dang that's a steal

これはお買い得だ

It's called “A steal” because it's so cheap it's almost like you stole it

まるで盗んだかのような安さだから "A steal "と呼ばれている。

Another phrase you can say is “It costs almost nothing” or “It costs next to nothing”

別の言い方をすれば、"It costs almost nothing"、"It costs next to nothing "である。

Almost free basically

基本的にほぼ無料

How much is the bubble tea here?

ここのバブルティーはいくらですか？

Just a buck??

ただのバック？

Wow that costs almost nothing!

わあ、これならほとんどお金はかからないね！

A buck?!

Dang that's next to nothing

何もないに等しい

Ok now, what if a shop charges more than three dollars?

では、3ドル以上請求する店があったらどうする？

It's time to learn some new ways to say expensive

高価なものの新しい言い方を学ぶ時だ。

If a shop charges a little bit more, maybe three fifty instead of three dollars

もし店がもう少し料金を取るなら、3ドルではなく350ドルかもしれない。

Then you can say, “Ooo that's kind of pricey”

そうすれば、"おっ、それはちょっと高いな "と言うことができる。

Pricey is like a little bit more expensive but not really expensive

値段は少し高いが、それほど高くない。

How much is the bubble tea here?

ここのバブルティーはいくらですか？

three fifty?!

350?

Mmm seems kind of pricey but I'm too lazy to go next door so I'll take it

うーん、ちょっと値段が高いような気がするけど、隣に行くのは面倒だから、これにしよう。

Or some places, if they're really really greedy, they might charge four dollars for

あるいは、本当に本当に貪欲な店だと、4ドルを請求するところもある。

And if they're charging four dollars for a bubble tea

バブルティーに4ドルも取るのなら

Then you can say, “Wow that is steep!”

そうすれば、"すごい急勾配だ！"と言うことができる。

four dollars?! four dollars for a bubble tea?

バブルティーが4ドル？

Wow that's pretty steep

うわー、かなり急だ

Steep you can use for something that is more expensive, but not quite super expensive

スティープ......もっと高価なものに使えるが、超高級とまではいかない。

But wait, some places will charge even more than that

しかし、それ以上の料金を請求するところもある。

What if they charge five dollars for a bubble tea?

バブルティーが5ドルだったら？

That's a ripoff

ぼったくりだ

How much again?

またいくらですか？

five dollars? what a ripoff!

5ドル？

I'm not gonna pay that.

そんなもの払うつもりはない。

No one's gonna pay that

誰も払わないよ

Or you can also say it costs an arm and a leg

あるいは、手足がかかると言うこともできる。

Meaning, it's so expensive, you have to chop off your body parts and give it to them

つまり、とても高価なものだから、自分の体の一部を切り落として彼らに提供しなければならないということだ

Hey, this place is pretty good, but they charge an arm and a leg.

おい、この店はなかなかいいけど、高いぞ。

I would suggest going somewhere else

他の場所に行くことを勧める

I know, it sounds weird, but I don't make these words up, I just teach 'em

変に聞こえるかもしれないけど、僕はこういう言葉を作っているわけじゃなくて、ただ教えているだけなんだ。

And remember, don't just watch the video

You have to practice saying it

Make sentences.

Talk to other native speakers

Or, here's a good way to practice

Next time you're out window shopping

今度ウィンドウショッピングに出かけたら

Just go to different stores and think about it in your head

いろいろな店に行って、頭の中で考えるだけでいい

That looks steep.

険しそうだ。

Or that looks like a steal.

あるいは、それがお買い得に見える。

Or that looks like a ripoff!

あるいは、ぼったくりのように見える！

But Just think about it though.

ただ、考えてみてほしい。

Don't actually tell the owner, “Hey this is a ripoff”

オーナーに "おい、これはぼったくりだ "と言ってはいけない。

You're going to offend them

彼らを怒らせることになる

And there are tons, tons more ways to say “Cheap” and “Expensive”

そして、"安い "や "高い "を表現する方法は、もっともっとたくさんある。

I just picked a few of the common ones that most people use
