I call upon the youth of the world in Tokyo, Japan,

to celebrate the games of the 32nd Olympiad.

３２回目の五輪大会を 祝う為です

Finally, Karate is coming to Tokyo Olympics 2020.

終に空手は２０２０年東京 五輪の公式種目になります

You know, for me, an Olympics 2020 is like a dream.

私にとって五輪２０２０は まるで夢なのです

I'm born and brought up in Mumbai.

私はムンバイで生まれ育ち ました

I always was a little tomboy.

ある意味常に少し男の子ぽい 方でした

A major part of my life has been when I was in

NCC Army Wing because my first career choice was

居た時にそれが私の最初の 職業の選択でした

to be in the army.

But while I was in college my friends just forced me

and as a surprise package,

I was a finalist, and from there on

the offers just kept pouring in, and I was a model!

My love for sport had kind of taken a back seat.

スポーツに対する思いは ある意味遅れていました

I told my friend, I said,

私は友人に言いました

"Why don't I just come and see your session one day?"

「いつかあなたのセッション を見てはダメかしら？」と

Because they were doing karate.

彼らが空手をやっていたから

And I went there

そしてそこに行きました

and my sir is, like,

そして私の師匠がしていた 事は

hitting them really hard on their stomach,

彼らのお腹を物凄く強く 叩いていたのです

on their legs.

彼らの脚で

It's called conditioning.

それは条件つけと呼ばれる 物です

And I just knew it that day,

そしてその日に私はただ 分っていました

that I want to be as powerful as these boys

この男の形と同じ位強く 成りたいんだと

and I wanted to join karate.

そして空手に加わりたかった

I thought after looking at this, she may say,

私はこれを見た後多分彼女は こういうだろうと思っていた

"Why am I getting into all this beating stuff?

「何でこんな叩かれる事に 入るの？」と

"I'll be not able to walk on the ramp and do anything.

「その威嚇の状態を歩けない し何もできない

"My nose and face is broken."

「私の鼻と顔が壊れた」

I thought that she may not come, but she joined.

彼女は来ないかもと思った けれど入りました

When I started karate, for me, it was a big challenge

空手を始めた時それは 大きなチャレンジでした

between my glamour world and karate as a sport,

魅力的な世界と競技としての 空手の間で

because it's such a contrasting career.

この対照的なキャリア だから

Every single time I go to a fashion show,

いつもファッションショーに 行く全ての時

and I come back and I realise, "Oh, my God!"

そして戻ってきて分るのです 「オーなんてこったい！」

It is a shift mentally, it is a shift physically.

心理的に動き 肉体的にも動く

Karate had made her fitter,

空手が彼女を強くさせた

agility, focus, the discipline.

瞬発力集中力とコントロール

I've seen so many girls and boys getting nervous,

沢山の女子や男子がナーバス に成ったのを見てきています

seeing so many people.

沢山の人々が見ているから

For her it was a benefit.

彼女の為にそれは利益に なりました

Being a model,

she performs more when there are more people.

My mum and dad are from Karnataka, Mangalore.

is because of my parents' belief in me.

there's hardly any parent who have given

In my house, we were four - my two brothers, my sister and me.

I'm the youngest.

In South Indian families you always notice that men

somehow are given that priority and they always

are people who are doing the outside work.

It's amazing that how big that ratio is, and how much

our girls need to learn, not only to feel safe for

oneself, but also for the family.

And, when you feel physically strong,

I have felt it,

そして家族にとっても 必要な物です

after doing karate I've learnt to say, "No."

肉体的に強く感じる時には

"Kara" - empty hand. Karate means "empty hand."

そう感じたのです

If she has to score,

空手をやった後「いいえ」と いう事を学びました

she has to go with the same intensity,

「空」－からの手 空手の意味は「からのて」

the way she's going to punch anybody on the road.

彼女が得点しなければ ならなければ

But, the only thing is, she has to control.

彼女は同じ強度で行く 必要があります

Only skin touch.

その方法で彼女はその道の上 で誰でもパンチします

I'm going to basically show you my favourite moves.

しかし彼女が制御すべき唯一 の事は

We start with a punch and you go on the stomach or the chest.

肌に触れる事だけ

On the other side, now I'll do a face punch.

私は基本的にお気に入りの 動きを見せる予定です

For the kick, it's a mawashi geri,

私達はパンチで始めて又お腹 或いは胸に続けます

and uda mawashi geri.

反対に今私は顔をパンチする のです

Once we had gone for one tournament.

蹴りに関しては それは回し蹴りです

There were no girls in her category to participate.

そして腕回し蹴り

I just asked her,

一度我々が一トーナメントに 行くとして

"Are you willing to fight with the guys?"

彼女のカテゴリーでの参加者 の女子が一人もいません

So, she willingly said, "Yes, fine."

だから彼女に尋ねたのです

So I said, "Fine, at least she'll get one or two rounds

「男子と戦うのは かまわないか？」

"to practise."

そして彼女は喜んで言った 「はい大丈夫です」と

There were about 35 to 40 people

そして私は「よし少なく共 一か２ラウンドは通るだろう

in that category that day.

「練習の為にも」

The starting turning point that I concentrated on her

約３５人から４０人の人々 が居ました

was she won the tournament in the guys' category.

その日そのカテゴリーに

In 2007, for the first time,

my karate sir told me to compete,

彼女は男子のカテゴリーで そのトーナメントで勝利

and I was like, "Oh, my God!"

I thought that he's really lost it because...

But, on his insistence, I just went there and I was, like,

「なんてこったい！」と 言う感じで

a double gold medallist.

And, you can see, very, very, attacking mode, both of us.

これは最も重大な戦いの 一つです

Oh, that was a very tough tournament for her

私はニュージーランド人と 戦いました

because she got Australia,

見ると分かる様に両方共私達 はとても強い攻撃モードです

she got New Zealand, she got Sri Lanka.

オーそれは彼女にとって とてもタフなトーナメント

All these were the top girls to go through.

彼女がオーストラリアに 勝ったから

And she did it. That was really...

ニュージーランドに勝ち スリランカに勝ちました

I'm getting gooseflesh now.

これら皆はトップの女子とし て勝ったのです

There's so much pressure for the country to win a medal,

そして彼女はやりました そしてそれは本当に

and we both are not ready to let go.

私は今鳥肌が立っています

There you go - one punch straight on the face,

メダルを獲る為に国には多く のプレッシャーがあります

this is the scoring point.

そして我々は両方共 負けられません

I've been through a lot to be here.

これは得点ポイントです

Of course, I have a lot of pressure from my parents,

my family.

You know, they all keep saying,

勿論両親からの多くの プレッシャーはあります

"So, Sandhya, when are you getting married?"

私の家族からも

And I always tell my parents that, you know,

your daughter has achieved much more.

In our society,

そして私は何時も両親に 言いますと言うのは

if somebody like me who's made to feel little

just because I'm not married,

or just because I don't have kids, I just

wonder about all these girls who are not so privileged.

Our problem in India,

全てのこれらの女子について 特権をあまりない人達

is that after 21-22 the girl gets married.

インドのの女性の結婚の平均 年齢は19.2才です

After marriage, she's finished.

インドでの我々の問題は

She's not participating any more.

２１から２２歳の後女子が 結婚すると

結婚すると彼女は終わりなの です

I feel somewhere,

彼女はもう参加しなくなる のです

I could have been better

インドの五輪メダルの受賞の 25％だけが女子なのです

If I would have got support off the Government,

私はどこか

off the Federation (MEDAL EVENT)

もっとより良くなれたかも

and some sponsors in a much more stronger way.

Every single year, I would,

you know, go for my modelling assignments,

協会のオフ

my acting assignments, earn X amount of money,

そして何人かのサポーター達 はもっと凄く強い方法

and I would divert all the funds into my karate.

You won't believe, sometimes in the

tournament or in the class,

私の演技の割り当てでＸ額の お金を稼ぐのです

she has fractured her leg or something.

そして私の空手に全てのお金 が転向するのです

And I came to know that next day she has gone for ramp walk!

My focus was so much on trying to

時々信じないでしょう

balance everything, and there were so many times when

彼女の脚或いは何かに罅が 入ったのです

I wanted to go and attend an international competition

そして次の日彼女は引きづり 歩きをしていた事が分った

but I didn't go because there was no sponsor,

私の集中は凄くて 全ての事をバランスとれる

there was no government help.

In one of the years,

行こうと又国際大会に 感じたいと思ったので

when I was selected as a top Asian probable...

しかし私は行きませんでした スポンサーがいなかったから

..you know, I left entire year.

政府の助けはありません でした

And, taking a break for one year means

その年の内の一度

you are out of your career and people tend to forget you.

アジアのトップの可能性の ある選手に選ばれたとき

And, for that one year,

...私はその年ずっと 離れた

I must have attended multiple camps in karate,

そして一年かその位休みを とった

I have broken twice my nose, hairline fracture,

あなたのキャリアを離れると 人々は貴方の事を忘れる事に

I've broken my left hand,

そしてその一年の間

I've broken multiple times my leg.

私は空手で複数のキャンプに 参加しなければならなかった

Finally,

鼻を二回折ってヘアライン 骨折で

we're about just one month away

私の左手は折れていました

to be leaving for the Asian Games.

脚を複数回折りました

And, we come to know that

終に

the whole India team will not be going because of

残り１か月だけになって

some paperwork goof up and some Federation problem.

アジア大会に参加するために 出発するために

My heart just sank.

そして我々が知ったのは

I broke down.

インドチームは全員行かない 事に成ったというのは書類が

I don't think I've ever broken down so badly, because...

整っていなくて又幾つかの 協会の問題もあったから

..I moved out of my house

私の心は沈みました

because I went into depression.

神経衰弱になりました

And I was just staring at my walls.

そこまでひどく衰弱した事は 無いと思いますなぜなら

And, trust me, I cried like a baby that day, because...

家から引っ越しましたから

..I realised I was going down

鬱になったから

and I took this one step that day to get out.

そしてただ壁を見つめている だけになりました

That day, something changed in me.

信じて下さいただ赤ちゃんの 様になき　そして

I said, "Every single time

自分が沈んでいるのに 気が付いたのです

"I will fall down, I will get up.

出掛ける為にその日一歩を 取ったのです

Throughout my life, I was dreaming to be an Olympian.

その日僕の中で何かが変り ました

But I did not get that opportunity.

私は「毎回 落ちても立ち上がる」

At least, now my student gets an opportunity,

と言いました

my dream will be fulfilled.

人生を通して私は五輪選手に 成る夢を見ていました

Yes, she's got a very bright chance.

その機会は得られなかったの です

All the women and all the children

終に私の生徒が今その機会を 得ました

in India, will definitely pray for her

私の夢は成就します

to win a gold at the Olympics.

はい彼女はとても明るい機会 を得ました

She has our blessings to win and return.

全ての女性と全ての 子供達

I always feel the participation is great,

インドでは皆が彼女の為に 絶対に祈ります

but the spirit of winning has to be the focus.

五輪で金メダルを獲る為に

And I think that makes a winner.

私達の祝福があり勝利して 戻ってくるのです
