It's a cat that loves water,

and lives in some of the most unique and valuable ecosystems on earth:

the wetlands and mangrove forests of South and Southeast Asia.

Aren't they fishing awesome?

魚を捕るなんてすごいでしょう？

Fishing cats are one of about 40 species of wildcats.

(笑)

Like tigers and lions, only much smaller.

スナドリネコは 40種のヤマネコのうちの一種で

They're probably around twice the size of our average domestic cat.

虎やライオンと同じ仲間ですが 体はだいぶ小さく

In Indonesia,

家庭で飼うネコよりは ２倍くらい大きいです

people call them "kucing bakau,"

インドネシアでは

which literally translates to "the cat of the mangroves."

「kucing bakau」と言います

But I like to call them the tigers of the mangroves.

「マングローブ林のネコ」 という意味ですが

Now, we don't know fishing cats as well as we do tigers,

「マングローブ林の虎」 と私は呼びたいです

but what we've learned is that these cats can be a flagship species

スナドリネコについては 虎ほどよく分かっていませんが

to a globally important ecosystem,

このネコが 世界の生態系の中で

and a visual bait attached to a strong line for conservation.

Like many endangered species,

fishing cats are threatened by habitat loss,

mainly because of our international demand for farmed fish and shrimp,

and the deforestation of nearly half the historic mangrove cover

in South and Southeast Asia.

Mangroves, on the other hand,

are much more than just habitat to the fishing cat.

They are home to a fantastic array of species,

like jackals,

turtles,

shorebirds

and otters.

Mangroves also prevent soil erosion,

and they can be the first line of defense between storm surges, tsunamis

and the millions of people who live next to these forests

for their day-to-day survival.

The fact that puts the icing on the cake --

In less than a decade,

the state forest departments and the local communities

worked together to restore

マングローブ林に再生されました

over 20,000 acres of unproductive fish and shrimp farms

５年ほど前

back into mangroves.

この再生されたマングローブ林から 見つかったのは…

About five years ago,

このスナドリネコの写真を 現地の人に見せたら

guess who we discovered in these restored mangroves?

世界的に尊ばれる絶滅危惧種と生態系が すぐ身近にあったことに

When we shared images of these fishing cats with local people,

誇りを感じてもらえたようです

we were able to build pride among them

さらに一部の人たちとは 信頼関係を築いて

about a globally revered endangered species and ecosystem

別の形で生計を立てられるよう 手助けすることもできました

in their backyards.

サントシュは 19歳の青年で

We were also able to build trust with some people

１年以上我々と働いて

to help them lead alternative livelihoods.

環境保護のプロになっただけでなく

Meet Santosh, a 19-year-old boy

さらに現地の多数の漁師の 協力をとりつけて

who not only became a conservation professional

スナドリネコの調査と保護に 取り組んでくれました

after working with us for just over a year

モシは 密猟者でしたが

but also went on to involve many local fishermen

密猟を止めて

in helping study and protect fishing cats.

かけがえのないほど素晴らしい 環境保護家となっただけでなく

Meet Moshi, a tribal poacher,

who not only stopped hunting

身近なマングローブ林に棲む絶滅危惧種を 捕獲してはいけないと

and became our most prized conservationist,

but also used his traditional knowledge

to educate his entire community to stop hunting fishing cats, otters

and the many other threatened species

Fish and shrimp farmers, like Venkat,

are now willing to work with us conservationists

３者間でのWin-Win

to test the sustainable harvest of ecosystem services like crabs,

and possibly even honey, from mangroves.

where they have been lost.

These stories show us that we can all be part of a future

それを大物にするお手伝いを 我々ができていれば幸いです

where fishing cats and the lost mangrove forests

全力を注いで それに取り組みましょう

are protected and restored by fishermen themselves,

地球上の命がもう少し長く 生き残れるようにです

creating carbon sinks

我々の友達ならこう言うかな

that can help offset our ecological footprints.
