Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Prepositional Phrase number 8. The prepositional phrase
today is above the law. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. If we say that
someone thinks he or she is above the law, it means that person believes that
they do not have to obey the law. He or she believes that they are too important
or of a higher rank or status that laws do not apply to them or that he or she
is of a protected class, so that they won't be punished. Okay. Let's continue.
Remember "above" can mean someone or something is of a higher standard or
considered more valuable or more important. So they think that you know,
they're above the law. The law cannot touch them. That's what they think in
that sense. That's what we mean if we say that somebody thinks they're above the
law or he considers himself to be above the law. Or sometimes we say nobody
should be above the law. You often hear it used that way. So let's just look at
three examples we have here. Number one. Because he is the son of a powerful
politician, he thinks he's above the law. Nobody will dare to punish him. Okay. Number
two. A lot of politicians will commit crimes because they believe they are
from a protected class. Nobody should be considered above the law. Okay And number
three. You could say he is a dictator. He knows he is above the law. If you're a
dictator you might know. No one would dare to challenge or even say anything
to him. Yeah. You know. In some countries where there were dictators a lot of them
got away with whatever they wanted to do. Okay, Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's
clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
