まずメスの方を先に行かせて

He would go up, open the first gate.

彼も上っていって最初のゲートを開けるんです。

He'd hold the gate and say "woman, get up, I'm pulling open, you open up."

するとゲートを押さえたまま「今度はお前が上っていって開けてくれ、そうしたら俺が押し開けるから」ってな感じです。

She goes up to the top, she pulls the second one out.

彼女の方は上まで上っていって、2個目のボルトを外すんです。

And then he pulls it open, he waits for her to get down and they escape together.

そうすると引いてゲートを開けて彼女が下りてくるのを待って、一緒に脱出するんです。

The escape was no fluke.

こういった逃走劇はまぐれで起きたわけではありません。

Considering their small size, honey badgers have remarkably big brains.

体のサイズは小さいものの、ハニーアナグマはとてつもなく頭が良い動物です。

Their intelligence is just beyond anything.

彼らの賢さっていうのは想像を超えてきます。

Whatever Brian did to keep him in, Stoffle was hell-bent on getting out.

ブライアンがどんなに閉じ込めておこうと頑張っても、ストッフル君は必死になって脱出を試みます。

In the end, and a great expense, Brian had no choice but to build his own badger Alcatraz.

結局、多額のお金を費やしてブライアンはアナグマ版アルカトラズ刑務所を建設せざるを得ませんでした。

Mr. Stoffle, the days of your escape are over, buddy.

ストッフル君、これで君の逃走の日々も終わりだよ、と思いましたね。

That night, they called me "Brian, Stoffle's out."

その日の夜に、誰かが「ブライアン、ストッフルが脱出したよ」と教えてくれたんですけど

「そんなのありえないよ！」と言ってしまいましたね。

But we had trees in here, and he climbed up the trees, leaned over onto the wall and he was out.

でも、木があったんですけどその木に上って壁に向かって体を伸ばして、そのまま外に出たんです。

So, we cut all the branches out of the trees in here and left the trees in the middle.

ですから、ここの木の枝を全部切り倒して木も中心部だけに残すようにしたんです。

Then, he dug up the rocks.

そうしたら今度は岩を掘り出してきて。

He'd rolled them with his back feet to the wall, and neatly piled them up high enough.

後ろ足で壁際まで転がしていって、高さが十分になるまできれいに積み重ねて

And then he'd get out, so we took all the rocks away.

外に逃げ出したので、岩を全部撤去しました。

This is like a game for Stoffle.

これってストッフルにとってはゲームみたいなものなんです。

Every time I'd devise some plan, it was like a game for him to work out how could he get over this.

私が良い案を考案する度に、彼にとっては新しいゲームで遊ぶようなもので、どうやってこの問題を解いていこうかという感じなんです。

1 o'clock in the morning, my wife waked me (up) "Brian! Brian! Someone's in the house."

夜中の1時に妻が私を起こして、「ブライアン！ブライアン！誰かが家の中にいる」って言うんです。

そうしたら、ストッフルがベッドルームのドアをいじりながら何とか開けようとしていたんです。

He'd made himself a mud ball and he'd patted to make it bigger.

自分で泥の団子を作って、くっつけて大きくしていったんです。

And he rolled it and he stood on it and he just got out like that.

それから丸めてその上に立って、こんな感じに逃走していったんです。

People have said, "Oh, did you train it?"

みんなは「そういう風にしつけたの？」って聞くんですけど

I said "Train it? Not at all!"

私は、「しつけた？全然！」みたいな。

Didn't even think of it.

そんな事考えた事も無かったですよ。

He outwitted us each time, with his skills.

彼の方が毎回こちらのアイデアの上を行くんです。スキルを駆使して。

I remember one day, keeper left a rake in Stoffle's enclosure.

覚えているのは、ある日飼育係がストッフルのオリの中にくま手を置き忘れたんですけど

He scratched himself, lies on his side, he's thinking.

ヤツは体を掻きながら横になって、考えを巡らすわけですよ。

Computers working.

コンピューターがフル回転、みたいな。

Take the rake, put it on his back, put it against the wall.

くま手をつかんで、背中に乗せて、壁に寄りかからせて置いて

Climb out and off he go.

上っていったら脱出成功。
