If you ever wondered about why people in Japan wear surgical masks you are in the right place.
This is Inside Japan.
Cities in Japan are very populated and many people come into close contact with other people.
Because of this, people try their best to avoid spreading germs.
When it comes to sickness, people would wear surgical masks for two reasons: to prevent and to protect.
If someone is sick, they would wear a mask so they can try to prevent their germs from passing to other people.
If someone wanted to protect themselves from getting sick, they would wear the mask even though it doesn't help as much as people think.
Another reason why someone would wear a mask is to not breathe in pollen during the spring.
Many people get hay fever during the spring in Japan because of the cedar trees. Masks would help in this case.
A reason some women wear masks is to wear little to no makeup.
If going out for only about 10 minutes, would it be worth it to spend time putting on makeup or would it be easier to cover up with a mask, hat, and glasses?
Likewise, some male and female celebrities wear these items to hide their identities when going out.
