Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is lesson 277. The title of today's lesson is ' Use
the article the with particular dates or periods of time.' Yeah. I've done a number
of videos in the past talking about like when you should use the article 'the' and
when you should not use the article 'the. ' Because there's really many, many rules
about them. I haven't done a one in a while, but here's a new one, telling you
some other times when you should be using the article 'the.' So you should use
the article 'the' again with dates, particular dates or particular time
periods or periods of time. So let's look at the first example. They didn't start
manufacturing cars until the beginning of the 20th century. So the beginning of
the 20th century is a time period. So you definitely use a 'the.' It would be
incorrect if a student simply read it as, they didn't start manufacturing cars
until beginning of the 20th century. If you omitted the, 'the' here , it would
definitely be wrong. You have, you must say the beginning of the 20th century . It
is a particular time period. All right. Let's look at number two.
The National Day in Taiwan is celebrated on the 10th of October.
Well that is a specific date. So you say the 10th of October. Again if you
read it and said you know the National Day in Taiwan is celebrated on 10th of
October that would be wrong. You must say the 10th of October. Okay, Let's continue.
Number 3. I like the music from the 1980s the most. So any time we say those like
decades, the 1960s, the 1990s the 1970s or in this case the 1980s. Always
use a 'the' with it. Okay. Good. Let's look at number four. The Victorian era
All right. That's another time period. So well here, here's where we're using ' the. '
So we say the Victorian era was during the time when Queen Victoria ruled
England. Okay. Good. Let's look at number five. Disco became
popular during the 70s. Well just like we say the 1980's , he 1990s, if we just use
like the word you know, like the 60s the 70s the 80s. That is a time period too. So
you use a 'the' with it Again it would be incorrect if you simply said Disco
became popular during 70s. No. You could not. You have to say the 70s. Okay and
let's look at number six here. His son was born on the 5th of June.
All right. Well again this is a specific date. So you must say the 5th of June. So the
whatever date it is of the month. Again if you would if you were to say his son
was born on 5th of June. No that would be wrong. If to say the 5th of June. Okay. Again,
I hope it's clear. I hope you got it. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye
