  • Hi, everyone! Welcome back to David Qing's Mandarin Impossible channel.

  • In the first video, you learned the three elements of Mandarin Chinese characters'

  • pronunciation are consonant, vowel and tone mark. In this video, I will introduce the

  • consonantsof the Hanyu Pinyin phonetic system.

  • There are 23 consonants in Hanyu Pinyin.

  • The consonants are divided into 8 parts in relation to how you use your mouth, tongue,

  • lips and teeth to articulate and pronounce the sounds. On this screen, from Part 1 to

  • Part 8, are all the consonants we will study in this lesson.

  • Now, let's start to learn how to pronounce these consonants together.

  • For Part 1, there are three symbols. Try to make the sound with your lips. Please pronounce

  • it after me

  • "b" "p" "m"

  • For Part 2, there is only one symbol. Try to make the sound with your upper front teeth

  • touching your lower lip. Please pronounce it after me

  • "f"

  • For part 3, there are four symbols. Try to make the sound with the front tip of your

  • tongue touching the roof of your mouth directly behind your front teeth. Please pronounce

  • it after me "d" "t" "n" "l"

  • For part 4, there are three symbols. Try to make the sound from the root or back of your

  • tongue. Please pronounce it after me "g" "k" "h"

  • For part 5, there are three symbols. When you make the sound, try to keep your tongue

  • flat inside your mouth, and keep your upper and lower front teeth touching together gently.

  • Please pronounce it after me "j" "q" "x"

  • For part 6, there are four symbols. Try to roll up your tongue when you make the sound.

  • Please pronounce it after me "zh" "ch" "sh" "r"

  • For part 7, there are three symbols. For these three symbols, let your tongue relax, but

  • try to keep your upper and lower front teeth touching together gently. Please pronounce

  • it after me "z" "c" "s"

  • For part 8, there are two symbols. For these two symbols, please focus on the shape of

  • your lips when you make the sound. Please pronounce it after me

  • "y" "w"

  • From Part1 to Part 8, we learned to pronounce 23 consonants. Now, let's have a quick review for all 23

  • consonants.
