  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Proverbs 147. The proverb today is "all's

  • well that ends well. " So when we say all's that this comes from

  • old Middle English All's actually means all is well. So it means everything is okay.

  • Everything is good that ends well. Okay Let's take a look at the note here. The

  • proverb basically means as long as a situation ends well or in a positive way

  • don't worry about the difficulties you encountered along the way. Yeah. Forget

  • about it. The important part is that it ended well. Be happy with that. So that's

  • basically what the phrase means. All's well that ends well. Okay. Let's continue.

  • The proverb is actually the name of a Shakespeare play which probably helped

  • to popularize it over time. It made it even more popular you know, to last

  • throughout you know, history even though Shakespeare is credited with creating

  • many English phrases, he didn't coin this one. He didn't create this one. This

  • proverb predates him. So the proverb is older than him. It was around before him.

  • The earliest citing comes from the 13th century writing "The Proverbs of

  • Hendying. " So that was ... it was probably an old

  • proverb around even then. So it might even be earlier than that, but that's the

  • earliest citing we can find on it. Okay. And we have we have two examples of how

  • we you might hear it used today. All right. Look at number one here. Even though you

  • had car trouble and hit traffic along the way,

  • you still got here in time to watch your daughter walk down the aisle, so to get

  • married. All's well that ends well. So even though he had difficulty arriving

  • you had a hard time getting there on time, but you got there on time. And you

  • got to see it. Everything worked out. So all's well that

  • ends well. Okay. Let's look at number two here. Even though this case had to be

  • appealed to a higher court, at least you got the verdict you hoped for. So you

  • know even though you probably had to pay a lot more money. It took a lot more time.

  • You went through some difficulties, but at least you got what you wanted to get.

  • You know sometimes people do that and they still don't get what they want.

  • Maybe the verdict will still go against them. So of course you could just end it

  • with all's well that ends well. You know the final result was good. So again don't

  • worry about all the trouble you had in the meantime. Okay. Anyway, I hope you got

  • it. I hope it was clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
