I have four boys.

4 人の息子がいます。

My sons will tell you, I'm always like, "clean up!"

息子たちが言うと思いますよ。僕の口癖は「片付けなさい！」

"Do your chores!"

「お手伝いしなさい！」

"Get it clean!"

「きれいにしなさい！」って。

You know, you're investing, you're talking, you're teaching, you're training.

僕たちがやっていることって、投資して、話して、教えて、鍛えているんですよ。

As a dad, sometimes you can forget you're just training.

父親として、単に鍛えているだけだということを忘れることもあります。

You're planting the seed now, and you're gonna see it eight years later.

今種をまいて、 8 年後に成果が見えるんです。

I want to make sure that I'm the father to them that I never had.

僕自信、得ることのできなかった「父親」を、僕の子どもたちには絶対に与えてあげたいんです。

So I was pretty serious about being a dad.

父であるということに対して、僕はすごく真剣でしたね。

It's interesting fear drove me in the beginning.

面白いのは、最初に僕の原動力となったのは恐怖心だったということです。

So I was overly on everything.

何事も、やりすぎていましたね。

No candy, only drink water.

キャンディはだめ、飲み物は水だけって。

You're gonna have those challenging moments, those accountability moments, you know.

こういう難しい時、責任感を感じている時ってあるでしょう。

I'm raising babies to boys to men.

赤ちゃんを男の子に、そして男性へと育てていくんです。

Early on showing them what support looks like, feels like.

早い時期から、サポートがどんなものか、どんな感じなのか見せるんです。

Things go not so great, helping you recover quickly.

物事があまり上手くいかなくたって、早く立ち直れます。

If you could now say something to yourself back then...What would you say?

当時の自分に何か言ってあげられるとすれば、何と声を掛けますか？

Even though it may not seem like it, they hear you.

子どもたち、聞いているように見えないかもしれないけれど、ちゃんと聞いてるよって言いますね。

A lot of times, they'll act like they don't even know I'm there.

子どもって多くの場合、僕がここにいることに気づいていないかのように振る舞います。

Julian, he's a senior, and I went to his football game, and I was trying to get there right before half time.

ジュリアンは高 3 なんですが、彼のフットボールの試合があったんですね。僕はハーフタイムの直前に、会場に到着しようとしていたんです。

So we could walk out, it was senior night.

シニアナイトがあったので、一緒に会場を出られるようにしようと思ってね。

And I missed it.

でも、間に合わなかった。

The traffic hit and I couldn't get there.

道路が渋滞していて、会場に着けなかったんです。

Later we talked to him, and I apologized.

後で息子と話して、僕は謝りました。

He was like "it's okay," he's like yeah.

すると息子は、「良いんだ。」って。

He's like, "I kept looking up but I didn't know where you were, I didn't see you."

「見上げてみてたんだけど、お父さんがどこにいるか分からなかったし、見えなかったから。」

And just that let me know.

それで分かりました。

Even though they don't say thanks for coming, or you know I'm glad you're there.

子どもって、「来てくれてありがとう」とか「来てくれて嬉しかった」なんて言わないですよ。

They're not gonna ever say that.

絶対言いません。

But you know, hearing that let's me know like, man, things are off if I'm not there.

でも、息子がこうやって言うのを聞いて、「ああ、僕がもしあそこにいなかったら、やはり違うんだな」って思いました。

何してるの？

I want to say thank you for showing me like, how to be a man, through like, my teenage years.

10　代の間中ずっと、男とはどうあるべきか示してくれて、ありがとうって言いたくて。

Because I know it's been hard, but thank you.

難しかったこと、知ってるから。ありがとう。

Thank you for supporting me at my football games, and through all my life.

フットボールの試合、それから僕の人生全てにおいて、支えてくれてありがとう。

It means a lot.

すごく大事なんだよ。

I'd like to thank you for bringing me into this world as your son.

この世界に、僕をお父さんの息子として連れてきてくれて、ありがとう。

As I was getting older, you're building me into a man.

僕が大きくなるにつれて、お父さんは僕を大人の男にしてくれていってる。

I'd like to thank you for that.

そのことを、感謝したいな。

You guys are becoming good men!

良い男になってきているじゃないか。

There are a lot of things that I want to accomplish.

僕には、達成したいことが山ほどある。

Lot of things that I want to do but I've always known that my biggest contribution to this world would be you.

やりたいことはたくさん。でも、いつだってわかっているんだ。この世界に対して僕ができる最大の貢献は、君たち 2 人なんだって。

And it means so much that you said that to me.

それを2人が言葉で言ってくれたのは、本当に大きな意味を持つんだよ。
