  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Adverb Phrase 15. The adverb phrase today

  • is around the clock or round the clock. So either one. So either round the clock

  • or around the clock. So we use both phrases So let's take a look at the note

  • here. If someone does something or something happens round the clock

  • or around the clock it goes on all day and all night

  • without stopping. So it's literally like you're looking at the clock and it goes

  • totally around all the hours passed by. So that's why they say around the clock.

  • Meaning the whole thing without stopping. All right. Let's take a look at some

  • examples here. Number one. Thomas Edison was known for working around the clock on

  • his inventions and sometimes did not come home for days. Yeah. If you have ever read anything

  • about his stories. Basically you know, I think his wife complained that sometimes

  • he wouldn't come home for 3 or 4 days. He'd be working around the clock. I don't

  • know, maybe he just took some naps in between. But that was a famous one they

  • talked about. He used to work around the clock. Or number two. In 1955, Bill Haley and

  • the Comets, they were ... they had a big hit at that time. They had a big hit called "Rock

  • Around the Clock. " Yeah. It was a very famous song in the 1950s and then I think later

  • in the 1970s it was used with the TV show happy days. It was the theme song.

  • And it went something like you know, one two, three, o'clock four o'clock rock. Five

  • six, seven, o'clock eight o'clock rock. Nine, ten, eleven o'clock twelve o'clock

  • rock. You're gonna rock around the clock tonight. That's the way it went. So I

  • think this song helped to make this phrase even that much more popular. Or

  • number three here. We could say almost all 711s are open around the clock. We

  • also say 24/7 a lot to mean you know, the whole day or around the clock ,as

  • well. And number four here. That factory has three shifts during the busy season.

  • Those machines are operating around the clock. So they don't have too much time

  • to stop for maintenance or anything like that. Anyway, I hope you got

  • it. I hope it was clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
