Today, I have got lots of idioms relating to time.

今日は、時間に関係するイディオムをたくさん学びましょう。

ちょっとしたコツを紹介しました。

Let's get on with the lesson.

レッスンを始めましょう。

Number one.

1つ目。

To be or not to be, that is the question.

このままで良いのか、良くないのか、それが問題。

No.

いえ。

To be or not to be born yesterday.

昨日生まれたか、生まれていないか。

If you are born yesterday, it means you are easily fooled

"born yesterday"とは、「騙されやすい」とか、

or very naive.

「すごく世間知らずだ」という意味です。

It's often used in a sarcastic, ironic way.

よく、皮肉として使われます。

Do you think I was born yesterday?

騙されるとでも思っているの？

Do you think I'm an idiot?

バカだと思っているの？

Or I wasn't born yesterday.

騙されないよ。

I'm not an idiot.

バカじゃないんだから。

I don't believe you.

あなたなんて、信じないわ。

Number two.

2つ目。

Better late than never.

遅れても、何もしないよりマシ。

This one's kind of self-explanatory.

説明は必要ないですね。

It means that doing something late

何かをするのが遅れても、

is better than not doing it at all,

何もしないよりはマシだ、ということです。

but I mention it in this video

でも、今回のビデオで触れたのは、

because it's also used in a sarcastic way.

これも皮肉として使われるからです。

I might say (scoffs) better late than never

冷やかして、"better late than never"と言えます。

if somebody is especially late.

特に、誰かが遅れて来た場合です。

Number three.

3つ目。

At the 11th hour.

At the 11th hourです。

At the 11th hour.

At the 11th hour.

This means almost too late or at the last possible moment.

これは、「ギリギリになって」、「土壇場になって」という意味です。

It's often used in business situations.

ビジネスにおいて、よく使われます。

For example, we barely made the deadline.

例えば、「締め切りにギリギリ間に合ったよ。

I turned in my project at the 11th hour.

プロジェクトを、期限間近で提出したんだ。」

Number four.

4つ目。

To beat the clock.

To beat the clockです。

To beat the clock.

To beat the clock

This means to finish something before time is up

これは、時間切れになる前に、何かを終わらせることです。

or before a deadline.

もしくは、締め切り前に、ですね。

In game shows, the hosts will normally talk

試合では、通常、司会者が

about beating the clock, finishing the game

"beat the clock"ということについて話します。試合や

or the competition before time is up.

競技を、時間内に終わらせるということですね。

Number five.

5つ目。

It's high time.

It's high timeです。

It's high time means it's the right time

It's high timeとは、何かをする良い時間、

or actually past the appropriate time to do something.

もしくは、適切な時間を過ぎてしまった時のことです。

For example, if I say it's high time we met

例えば、It's high time we met

to talk about the issue, I'm trying to say

to talk about the issueと言った場合、

that it's actually past the appropriate time,

適切な時間を過ぎてしまっている、

we should've met before,

前に会っておくべきだった、

and we really need to meet right now.

今すぐ会う必要がある、ということです。

Number six.

6つ目。

I wonder if you've heard this one before

これ、皆さんは聞いたことがあるでしょうか？

or if you've got an equivalent in your language.

また、似たような表現が、皆さんの言語にもあるでしょうか？

Time flies, or time flies when you're having fun.

Time flies、もしくは、Time flies when you're having funです。

This means that time passes incredibly quickly.

これは、「時間が驚くほど速く過ぎる」という意味です。

And time flies when you're having fun

Time flies when you're having funとは、

means time passes quickly when you're having a good time,

「楽しんでいると、時間がすぐに過ぎてしまう」ということです。

and that is so incredibly true.

これは、本当にそうですよね。

Number seven.

7つ目。

Third time's a charm or third time lucky.

Third time's a charm、もしくは、Third time luckyです。

This means that the third time you do something,

これは、何かを3度目にする時には、

it will usuall work.

大抵上手くいく、ということです。

It's normally said ironically

通常、皮肉として言われます。

if you've had to repeatedly try something

何回も繰り返し、何かに挑戦していて、

and you've been failing each time.

毎回失敗している場合です。

(tongue clicks)

（口を鳴らす）

Third time's a charm.

三度目の正直ですね。

Number eight.

8つ目。

In the long run.

In the long runです。

In the long run means in the long term

In the long runとは、「長期的に」とか、

or over a long period of time.

「長い時間をかけると」という意味です。

For example, studying English is hard,

例えば、「英語を勉強するのは難しいけれど、

but in the long run, it will be worth it.

長期的には価値がある。」

Number nine.

9つ目。

In the nick of time.

In the nick of timeです。

This, like the 11th hour, means at the last possible moment,

これは、"At the 11th hour"と同様、「最後になって」、

at the latest possible moment.

「ギリギリになって」という意味です。

For example, I made it to the bus in the nick of time.

例えば、「バスにギリギリ間に合ったよ。

I only just made it.

ちょうど間に合ったんだ。」

Number 10.

10個目。

The ship has sailed.

The ship has sailedです。

This means that an opportunity has been missed.

これは、機会を逃してしまった、という意味です。

I wanted to apply for the job, but the ship had sailed.

仕事に応募したかったけれど、時すでに遅しだった。

I missed the opportunity.

機会を逃してしまった。

I ran out of time.

時間が足らなかった。

And the last one, in next to no time.

最後は、In next to no timeです。

In next to no time.

In next to no time

And this means in almost no time at all.

これは、「時間をまったくかけず」という意味です。

In next to means almost,

In next toは、「ほとんど」という意味です。

so next to nothing means almost nothing.

Next to nothingとは、ほぼ何もない、ということです。

Next to no time means almost no time at all.

Next to no timeとは、時間がほとんどない、ということです。

For example, I arrived at the the club

例えば、「クラブに到着したら、

and then next to no time, I was asked to leave.

すぐに、『出て行ってください』と言われた。」

(chuckles)

（笑い）
