Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Lesson 338. The title of today's lesson
is instructions on how to do something not instructions how to do something. So
especially students of ESL, they probably will often omit the "on, " but that's very,
very important. So we should always say instructions on how to do something. Not
just instructions how to do something. Again you know, a native speaker would
probably understand this, but he would catch that doesn't sound quite right.
It doesn't sound quite proper. So this is why you want to correct this problem.
All right. So again let's look at the note here. With the X of course, this is wrong.
So here's the first example. The game came with instructions how to play. Yeah.
You know, a Westerner would definitely understand this. But of course, the proper
and the correct way to say you know, with the check here, would be the game came
with instructions on how to play. That's the way we would use it. That's correct.
All right. The second example. The car came with a manual that had instructions how
to fix or change parts. Yes. So of course again with the with the check this would
be correct. You should say the car came with a manual that had instructions on
how to fix or change parts. So make sure you use that 'on." This is another common
mistake by ESL students. They will omit the "on" here. And the third one. Can you
give me instructions how to fix my computer? No. Can you .... So of course
with the X that was wrong. With the check this is correct. Can you give me
instructions on how to fix my computer ? Okay, good, I hope you got it. I hope it's
clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
