  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Idioms 247. The idiom today is a matter of

  • course. Okay. We have several meanings or several ways that we use it here. So

  • let's look at the example. If something is done or occurs as a matter of course,

  • it is something that is expected or as a natural or logical consequence or a

  • natural logical result. Okay. Good. Number two here. It can also mean as a

  • normal procedure. It's an old procedure that somebody does

  • or follows. A regular habit or a form of behavior. So it could be used in any of

  • these ways. We got several examples of what we have here that will cover all

  • of these uses we're talking about. So let's look at example number one. Unless

  • the birth rate increases in that country, as a matter of course it is going to end up

  • as a graying society. Remember a graying society, we already have a number of them

  • already. Japan is probably the best example. Were

  • you, you have kind of a lopsided population. You have too many old people

  • and not enough young people. China is definitely headed for that because of

  • the you know, the one-child policy they had for many, many years. So you could end

  • up as a graying society where you have farm far too many older people and not

  • enough younger people to kind of support them. Okay, good. So let's continue here.

  • All right . So remember here, we said it is going to end up as a graying society. So

  • this is more like a consequence. A natural or logical consequence. Unless,

  • unless you do some significant... take some significant actions, this is how

  • it's going to end up. It's just a numbers game. Okay. Let's look at number two. When

  • traveling , you should take safety precautions as a matter of course. Well

  • this could be a few ones here. This could be like as a normal procedure. Like if

  • you travel a lot or even as a regular habit or form of behavior. If you do a

  • lot of traveling this is one thing that you know, you're supposed to do

  • To protect yourself while traveling. Okay. Good.

  • Number three here. If she is your daughter, we will hire her. But as a

  • matter of course, she must go through the ... the interview process. All right. Yeah.

  • Again basically this is the normal procedure in the company they probably

  • know her already. Maybe they're doing our favor

  • hiring her daughter, but you know , you still have to do it the, the, the normal

  • way that everybody else does it. So you still must go through the interview

  • process as a matter of course. Okay. Good. And number four. The last one. As a

  • matter of course, I want my lawyer to look over the contract before I will

  • sign it. Yeah. So again, this is probably this is a normal procedure for this

  • person or this business person that he wants to do. He wants to make sure the

  • lawyer looks it over, just in case something is a sneaky or something you

  • might not see in the contract. Hopefully your lawyer will catch it before you sign

  • it. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank

  • you for your time. Bye-bye.
