Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Word Origins 43. The word origin today is
Tiger mom. Okay. Let's take a look at the note. The term Tiger mom comes directly
from Tiger parenting. All right. We, we have a term like that. Here it ...and remember
Tiger itself is a symbol for Asia. Remember like in the late like 1980s
or when a lot of the Asian economies were doing really very well. You know,
economies like South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore ... a number of them were often
refer to as the tiger economies. That were ... that were you know quickly going up
at one point. So let's continue. Many Asian American parents are known for
being strict or at least by American standards anyway. And demanding they
often pressure their children to reach high levels or standards as well as
participate in extracurricular activities. For example, learning to play
a musical instrument, like a piano or violin or especially like a high-class
one. Okay. The term Tiger mom was coined by ... so coined by means created by Amy
Chua in her 2011 memoir. So she wrote you know, a story about her own life experience.
\"Battle Hymn of the Tiger Moms, \" and that term caught on. It's become a regular
term now. Any time, especially with Asian parenting or especially the Asian mother
is often referred to as a tiger mother, especially if she is this type. Of course,
there's a lot of success here. We know that a lot of Asian , Asian Americans you
know, if you figured out percentage-wise, they usually do pretty well. So maybe
some of this actually works. Anyway I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank
you for your time. Bye-bye.
